Fethard Juvenile GAA Club
A huge crowd attended last Saturday’s U15 ‘A’ hurling final played at Carrick Swan’s new grounds. Fethard lost out to a very strong Mullinahone team who started strongly, and were leading at the first water-break by 1-5 to 0-3, with our goalie, Luke Lacey, pulling off some great saves.

Fethard fought back hard and were just a goal behind, 1-6 to 0-6, just before half time, when Mullinahone got a lucky goal and a point, to leave the score 2-7 to 0-6 at the half time break.

In the second half, Fethard continued to chase hard with some great scores from Danny Shelley, Sam Coen, Mark Neville, Danny Barry, and Andrew Connorton. Just near the end of the third quarter Liam Kiely was very unlucky when his shot was stopped on the line, to bring it back to 2 points.
The scoreline was 3-11 to 1-11 at the third water-break and we ran out of steam in the last quarter to leave Mullinahone deserving winners.

The whole Fethard team played with great spirit and skill, and never gave up. While not victorious this time, the Fethard Juvenile hurling teams have made huge progress this year, reaching knock-out stages in U13 ‘B’ and ‘D’ grades, U15 ‘A’, U17 ‘B’, U19 ‘B’ and contested two finals – U15 and U19. We can only look forward to next year with some great anticipation.

Local writer, Brian Clancy’s latest work, 'The Year of ‘21', directed by Anne Williamson, explores the themes of religious and sexual identity, patriarchy and place in an era of great turmoil in Irish history. Grounded in real events that occurred towards the end of the War of Independence, this story explores how the loyalty and love of neighbours and friends are tested to the limits in times of extreme political violence.

The play also endeavours to imagine the voice of those who were on the wrong side of history at this time and to explore the emotional reactions of those who were indirectly affected by the violence. On the hundredth anniversary of the war, the themes of love, betrayal and profound loss are all relatable to a modern audience.
