The 2019 Bealtaine Munster Arts Exhibition and Competition in Fethard was a resounding success last weekend with visitors from near and far, including New Zealand. The overall winner, Una Walsh from Limerick, with her astounding drawing of medieval ‘Merlin’ was a unanimous decision by judges Cyril Cullen, designer of porcelain and knitwear; and Michael Kennedy, designer of costumes for film and opera. The runner up was Kevin Morrissey, Ballylanders.

Many thanks to our many sponsors and promoters, including Louis Grubb, Cashel Blue Cheese; FBD Insurance Group; Tipp Mid-West Radio; Augustinian Abbey and Fethard Parish Church; Nationalist Newspaper; Kathleen Ryan (Cashel); John Quirke’s Jewellers (Cahir); Tipperary County Council; and our dedicated local organisers: Marianne Shortall, Bernie Grogan, David Gorey, Helena O'Shea and Marie O'Hara (co-ordinator).

After expenses, including printing, insurance and other incidentals we were able to donate €171.30 to each of our two nominated charities from your donations left in our charity box at the free exhibition in the ICA Hall, Rocklow Road, Fethard. Both charities are worthy recipients – Alice Leahy TRUST who supports individuals and families who are homeless and find themselves in difficult circumstances; and Limerick Suicide Watch’s trained volunteers who patrol the bridges of Limerick City four nights a week to offer support and advice to prevent suicide. The group’s public relations officer, Lucy O'Hara, visited the exhibition and brought along information that highlighted their work in Limerick.

Thank you to all who supported these two worthy causes. Please keep in mind these two deserving registered charities especially if you wish to donate some time or funding in the future. – Marie O'Hara, Fethard.

Fethard’s U12 boys make club history
The month of May will go down in Fethard Juvenile GAA Club’s history as the month when our U12 boys won South Finals in both ‘A’ and ‘D’ divisions – and then capped it off by going on to win the U12 County ‘A’ Final.

Front L to R: Criostóir Sheehy, Jack Stokes, Oliver Woodlock, Kelvin Ryan, Lee Delaney and Troy Delaney.

The ‘D’ squad were brilliant in achieving a wonderful south final in Kilsheelan against Clonmel Commercials. These young players have developed so well over the season and grew together as a team. Parents, mentors and supporters all watched an epic battle that went into extra time, but their discipline, fitness and determination saw them through in the end.

Fethard U12 ‘A’ squad also encountered Clonmel Commercials to win decisively in Ballylooby, to be crowned South County champions. Not willing to rest on their laurels, they then drove on last weekend to play Arravale Rovers in the County final in Cashel where they achieved a momentous 2-10 to 2-03 win over Arravale Rovers. Great work by all the players helped them battle back despite injuries and missed chances to win comfortably.

As one long-time supporter and former player told us, “This is something else; bringing home a cup that has eluded our club, they’re great lads!” … and we say, hear, hear!

Another comment that was echoed by many who charted their rise to County Champions was their skills and teamwork. Full credit must be directed to the coaching team; they were fantastic with their insight, direction and respect for the full U12 squad. Special thanks to Eugene Walsh and Michael Hayes, with the help of Ollie Woodlock and John Lacey.

The final accolade must go to our boys – they worked for this victory and can rightly claim to be the best in Tipperary. We are all so proud of what you have done for our club and our parish.

Munster Juvenile Rivers Flyfishing Championship winner Robert Hackett (centre) being presented with his trophy. L to R: Andrew Ryan, Robert Hackett and Tom Ankatell

Congratulations to Fethard and Killusty angler Robert Hackett, who added to his recent success by winning the Munster Juvenile Rivers Flyfishing Championship on Saturday, May 4, with his fellow team member, Sean Ronayne, finishing 3rd.

Both Robert and Sean also won the Munster Juvenile Club Team Event representing Fethard and Killusty Angling Club.

This Munster championship was hosted by ‘Thurles Suir and Drish Anglers’ on the river Suir and river Drish. This event was organised by their committee member and Munster youth officer James Maher, who was ably assisted by his son Jack, secretary Ronnie Cagney and Seamus Butler. Apologies to anyone omitted.

All juvenile anglers caught trout on the day and will represent Munster in the All Ireland Championship later this year. This competition was fished on a catch and release basis with barbless hooks. Each trout was carefully measured and scored if over 20cm and then safely returned to the river. The competition was fished in two 2.5 hour sessions and each angler was allocated a specific beat in each session.

All prizes were kindly sponsored by Andrew Ryan, Clonanav Fly Fishing, in conjunction with Vision Tackle company. Andrew presented the prizes on Sunday evening in O'Gormans Bar & Restaurant, Bohernacrusha.

Local Annual Competition

All are welcome to join our flyfishing club and can do so by contacting Colm Hackett (086 8397868) or Seán Maher (085 7050580). New Senior and Juvenile members are always welcome.

Remember to please respect the landowner’s property when you go fishing on our wonderful club waters. Please pick up any litter you may find and bring it home, and always respect fencing and livestock whenever you are on the river. Fethard and Killusty Anglers Club would not exist without the kind permission of the landowners so please respect this every time you venture out.

Tight lines for 2019 as we’ve already seen some good fishing due to the mild winter, so get out there and enjoy your time by the Anner and Clashawley.

Best wishes to Alla Dediuk and her husband Andriy Dediuk who opened the doors of their new business ‘Alla’s Patisserie’ on The Square, Fethard on Thursday, May 9.

Alla’s baking has proved more popular than ever expected and her products are selling out faster than opening hours allow. Visit Alla’s Facebook page (search for Alla’s Patisserie) for a much better idea of the vast range of products available.

‘Alla’s Patisserie’ is a very welcome addition to our town and we wish her family every success as she comes to grips with the growing appreciation and demand for her great baking skills and good coffee in Fethard.

Work in progress on the East Gate Park development at Burke Street, Fethard, due to be officially opened later this year.

Fethard is to receive a further €25,000 grant from The Heritage Council towards stabilising, renovating and presenting the newly exposed Town Wall featured at the East Gate Park, linking Burke Street to Barrack Street.

The welcome funding was made available to Tipperary Council as part of the Heritage Council's budget allocation directed towards achieving some of the objectives in their new Strategic Plan. These include engaging young people with heritage and inspiring the next generation of heritage custodians and working with communities through their programmes such as the Irish Walled Towns Network (IWTN).

Great news for Fethard and its ongoing establishment as a major tourist destination.

Fethard Athletic Club’ ‘Walls of Fethard’ 4 miler
Once again, this year on Thursday, May 23, Fethard Athletic Club will bring Road racing to our historic town and countryside in the form of the now famous ‘Walls of Fethard’ – 4 Mile Road Race. This event is one of the few road races that run through the streets of a town or city in Ireland and gives free enjoyment to the inhabitants for over an hour period.

For twenty years or so, we have received excellent support from our loyal friends and businesses in the town and surrounding areas for this event, for which we are more than grateful. Once again, I call on your loyalty and generosity by way of sponsorship, be it cash, spot prize, voucher or whatever you feel suitable.

This year all the proceeds will be donated to the Children’s Ward in the South Tipperary General Hospital in Clonmel. In previous years, Fethard A.C. has held a Santa Run at Christmas time to support the Children’s Ward, but due to dates and permit issues, this is not possible this year. To date, we have forwarded three and a half thousand Euro to the Hospital and hopefully this year we will further add to that amount with your help and ours.

Thanking you in anticipation of a fruitful reply, yours in sport, Race Director Miceál McCormack, Hon Sec. Fethard A.C. Tel: 087 4032896.
