‘Lost’ section of Fethard’s Town Wall emerges from the past
This hidden stretch of Fethard’s medieval Town Wall is seen in all its glory from this fabulous drone shot taken of the East Gate Park Development by young Ciaran Maguire who is making a name for himself as the ‘eye in the sky’ for aerial photography.
The mysterious hidden stretch of Fethard’s famous medieval Town Wall is seen in all its glory from this fabulous drone shot taken last week at Burke Street. The drone is operated by Ciaran Maguire (aged 15) who is making a name for himself as the ‘eye in the sky’ and the go-to man for aerial photography.
Ciaran has already met with success with his atmospheric shots of Fethard’s stock of medieval buildings, including the Church of Ireland church and its late fifteenth century tower. Ciaran says more shots of Ireland’s only surviving medieval circuit of town walls are in the pipeline.
This latest photograph, taken as a panorama, shows the eastern terminus of the Town Wall and the straight section running away to the north towards Barrack Street. This section was almost certainly authorised in October 1449 at the Great Council in Dublin which provided for a massive cash injection for Fethard’s defences over a five-year period. The highest part of the Town Wall here is still more than 25 feet above the roadway and would have joined the now lost East Gate that loomed above the wayfarer coming in from Kilkenny through the ‘Compsey Gap’ via Cloneen.
The southern section of the Town Wall, along the river, was repaired back in the late 1980s thanks to the Friends of Fethard and the northern section was repointed in 2008 and 2009. The re-emergence of this hidden part of Town Wall – once masked by later buildings and covered in ivy – now gives us the whole picture.
The new East Gate Park running alongside this part of the Town Wall and nearing completion is the brainchild of Tipperary County Council’s visionary forward planners whose input has been crucial to this wonderful presentation of Ireland’s medieval heritage.
Van stolen in Fethard Shop raid is found
Report from The Nationalist, March 7, by Aileen Hahesy
A crime scene cordon around Meagher’s Daybreak shop and garage in Fethard on Monday morning after the burglary.
The Fethard shop raided in the early hours of Monday morning by criminals who broke into the premises by cutting a hole in the roof, was the target of a similar burglary exactly a year ago. The gang overcame heavy security measures to steal a quantity of cash and cigarettes from Meagher's Daybreak store on Kerry Street. The burglars escaped in a white Opel Vivaro van they stole from the forecourt of the shop and garage. The van, which has a registration number 12-TN-243, was found abandoned on Monday night in Stoneyford, Co. Kilkenny. Gardai are carrying out forensic examinations of the vehicle.
Store owner Iain Meagher described how the burglars broke through the security measures he put in place at the store. He said they lifted a manhole cover across the street from the shop and cut communications wires. They broke the store's burglar alarm off the wall and entered the store by cutting a hole in the roof and ceiling.
EIR technicians examining the damage to underground telephone cables caused by criminals involved in the break-in at Meagher’s Supermarket, Kerry Street, Fethard, in the early hours of Monday, March 4, 2019
Once inside the store, they used power tools, Mr Meagher believes it was an angle grinder, to cut the front off the shop's ATM. He said the criminals also gained access to the high security cash tills by cutting them with power tools. According to gardai, the burglary occurred sometime between midnight and when Iain arrived at the store shortly before 6am.
Underground telephone cables that were severed by criminals opposite Meagher’s Daybreak Supermarket , Kerry Street, Fethard.
Mr Meagher, who lives two miles from the shop, said he noticed the store's security cameras weren't working about 4.30am on Monday.
"I thought the internet must be down and didn't think much about it at the time. I went in (to work) at about 5.30am to 5.40am and noticed the alarm had been broken off the wall. I called the gardai straight away."
In addition to the cash and cigarettes they stole, the gang took the keys of an Opel Vivaro van parked in the forecourt from the shop. The van, which was up for sale, was used as a getaway vehicle though gardai believe the raiders must have arrived in another vehicle.
Mr Meagher said this latest raid occurred three days after the first anniversary of a similar break-in at his shop where the burglars also entered his premises by cutting a hole in the roof and stole cash and cigarettes. This time a lot more damage was caused to the shop. He said he did everything he had been advised to do to improve security at the store but it wasn't good enough. "The gardai told me there wasn't much more I could have done."
His store was also burgled in 2006 just three months after he started running the business. He recalls the store's safe was taken off the wall that time and cigarettes were stolen. After this latest heart-breaking burglary Mr Meagher said all he can do is "bolt everything up again" and continue on. Garda Inspector James White of Clonmel Garda Station said gardai were going through CCTV footage from cameras in the town as part of their investigation into the Meagher's Daybreak store raid. He appealed to anyone who was in Kerry Street and its surrounding area in the early hours of Monday morning and may have heard some noise coming from the shop or saw suspicious people or activity to contact Clonmel Garda Station at (052) 6122222.
Meanwhile, gardai are also appealing for the public's help in solving a burglary at Kenny's Centra Store at Barrack Street in Fethard in the early hours of Friday, February 15. A sum of cash was stolen from the shop. The burglars entered the building by breaking a window.

Ireland Newfoundland Gathering coming around again
For those interested in connecting with relatives or visiting the beautiful Newfoundland, this year's annual event will be hosted in Newfoundland from August 23 to August 31, 2019.
If you are interested in travelling to Newfoundland this August, please come along to an Information Evening in O'Ceallachain's, Main Street, Carrick-on-Suir, E32 W983, on this Wednesday, February 27 at 8pm. All are welcome, even if you don’t intend travelling this year. Do come along and bring a friend. The Ireland Newfoundland Festival is a unique community festival which rotates between South-East Ireland and Newfoundland, Canada.
John Roche, a native of Ballinard and now living in Kilsheelan , is a regular traveller with the group and was amazed by the hospitality shown and the ‘unreal’ Irishness of certain parts of the Newfoundland. For further information contact Wally Kirwan Tel: 087 2310396.
The visit is part of an on-going arrangement, where Newfoundlanders come to the South East one year, stay with Irish families, then the next year the Irish go to Newfoundland and do likewise. Up to half the population of Newfoundland of 600,000 have Irish ancestry and the forbearers of these Irish Canadians nearly came exclusively from counties Waterford, Tipperary, Kilkenny and Wexford. They all left in the 1700s and early 1800s (before the Great Famine) to work in the fishing industry. In fact the Irish word for Newfoundland is Talamh an Éisc, which literally means ‘the fishing grounds’.
In August , 2012, over sixty visiting Newfoundlanders visited Coolmore Stud and Fethard town, photographed above.
