Presentation Sisters 1862-2020 Booklet
We are currently compiling a booklet to mark the work of the Presentation Sisters in Fethard from 1962 to 2020. Over those years their presence in Fethard have served our community in many positive ways and helped many of their students to have an education that may otherwise have been impossible, particularly in the early years of their arrival to Fethard.

The Parish is currently compiling a booklet to mark the work of the Presentation Sisters in Fethard from 1862 to 2020. Over those years their presence in Fethard have served our community in many positive ways and helped many of their students to have an education that may otherwise have been impossible, particularly in the early years of their arrival to Fethard.

As well as Education, the Presentation Sisters also set up a Fethard Laundry Service that employed many local people. They were instrumental in preparing children and their colourful entries in the annual Fethard Carnival’s Fancy Dress Parades. In recent years they started Volleyball in the Convent that went on to compete at International Level. St. Bernard Group Homes was also opened in Fethard and a community house was opened at Woodvale Walk for training in crafts, cooking and other household skills. These are just a few of the areas that benefited our community and where they left their mark.

We invite you to be part of this booklet by letting us know your personal memories, stories or messages of appreciation, photographs etc, that you would like to have recorded in this booklet before the end of April.  Please send same to Joe Kenny, Rocklow Road, Fethard, or by email to: joe@fethard.com You can also contact Dermot O’Donnell at derodonnell@gmail.com or any member of the Parish Team.

Big Picture – Fethard ICA Choir win International Choral Festival Trophy – September 1964

Fethard ICA Choir win International Choral Festival Trophy 1964

On Thursday evening, September 29, 1964, Mr D. Colum O Cleirigh, B.Mus., made a formal presentation of the International Choral Festival Trophy and a cheque for £20 pounds (which they won in Cork earlier this year) to the Fethard ICA choir. Mr O Cleirigh, who is the County Music Organiser and who taught the choir, said Fethard could be proud of being the first choir ever from Tipperary to win at the Cork festival. Miss Alice Walsh, president of the ICA, thanked Mr O Cleirigh on behalf of the choir.

Afterwards the policy for the coming season was discussed. The choir will not be confined to ICA members, so a much bigger membership is expected. In fact, Mr O Cleirigh, expressed the wish that men would be encouraged to join also. Membership fee will be 7/6d this year and new members will be enrolled on Thursday night, October 8, in the ICA Hall, Rocklow Road, Fethard. It is hoped that this will be the beginning of another successful season for this Fethard choir.

Fethard & District Photos from the past . . .

This week we have a selection taken from old 'slides', from the 1970s onwards. If you didn't know what 'slides' are, ask your parents. They weren't for tying your hair back either. Well, these colour slides weren’t anyway, but they were the cheapest method of taking colour photos at that time, as processing was included with the price of the film. The film also included an envelope to post back for processing. The only drawback was that you needed a projector to show the slides on a wall or on a screen – a 'slide show'.

These are some from my collection, forgotten for many years and recently scanned. If you have any comments or further information, we would love to hear from you. Email: fethardnews@gmail.com
