Fethard Patrician Presentation Secondary School Annual Awards Day took place on Thursday, October 21, in the school gymnasium. Unfortunately, due to Covid restrictions the awards ceremony was a ‘virtual’ one. Students watched it in their classrooms and a link was available on the school website for parents and members of the community to join in. We hope that next year we will be able to return to our ‘normal’ awards Day and that students, teachers, parents and invited guests will be able to enjoy the day together once again.

Student Council Certificates were presented to L to R: Mary Ann Fitzgerald, Amy Morrissey, Ciara Donald Besso, Kelly Ryan, Curth Cortez, Emily Mai Ryan and T.J. Keane. Missing from photo are Jack O Donoghue, Emma Lyons and Haydn Fleming.

The Awards Day has always been a very joyous and positive celebration of our students’ achievements in several different areas. It is a central part of the culture and history of our school. Principal Billy Walsh pointed out that last year was a very difficult year for everyone, and this year’s award winners had triumphed greatly over adversity.

Big Picture – End of an Era at Fethard Secondary School 1988

Retirement of Timmy O’Connor Br Joseph and Brother Virgil (1988)

Were you in Fethard Patrician Brothers School in June 1988 to witness the triple retirement of Mr Timothy O’Connor, vice principal of the Patrician Brothers High School, and two Patrician Brothers – the Principal, Br. Virgil L. Duggan and Br. Joseph Doheny – the last Brothers to teach in the school.

You can zoom in closer to see more detail by clicking the photograph to zoom-in and double-clicking the photograph to zoom-out. If you can help with further information please let us know. Your comments, names or corrections are always welcome to: fethardnews@gmail.com

The end of an era arrived in Fethard back in June 1988 with the retirement of Mr. Timothy O’Connor, Vice Principal of the local Patrician Brothers High School, and of two Patrician Brothers, The Principal, Br. Virgil L. Duggan and Br. Joseph Doheny.

Timothy O’Connor, known only as Timmy to a legion of past pupils, completed forty years of service to the educational needs of Fethard, having come straight from University in 1948. Married to a local girl, Joan Brett, the popular Kerryman taught several generations of Fethard boys and later girls, in a quite dignified manner which endeared him to all classes over the years.

His many past pupils wished him a long deserved, fruitfull retirement. The retirement of the two teaching Patrician Brothers brought to an end the direct teaching involvement of the order in Fethard Secondnary School which was carried down through the years by such trojan figures as Br. Athanasius, Br. Gelasius and the legendary Br. Albert Small.

Br. Virgil Duggan, a Laois man, had been in Fethard as Principal for six years. A keen GAA follower and a patient and dedicated administrator, he likewise was wished a fruitful retirement.

Br Joe Doheny, from Ballingarry, served two spells in Fethard and also in Newbridge, as Principal, and Ballyfin College. A keen expert in the field of science and horticulture, Br Joseph was a fine teacher, acknowledged as such by all. In his spare time he could strike a golf ball with the best.

It is interesting to note that Timothy O’Connor was the first lay-teacher in Fethard Secondary School and at the year of his retirement, saw the last Patrician Brothers' involvement, leaving a total staff of lay teachers.
All three have now gone to their eternal reward and may the lives of their pupils give testimony to their teaching skills.
