Fethard’s Junk Kouture team from Patrician Presentation Secondary School travelled to Limerick on Friday, March 11, where they competed in the Munster heat of the competition, chosen from around 3,000 entries throughout Ireland. The Fethard school team, from 4th Year, was Emma Cronin (model), Mark Hayde, Shauna O’Neill and Jack Spillane. Emma performed a wonderful exhibition of the dress for the judges, accompanied to their music choice, Adele’s ‘Hello’.
Twenty entries were then chosen in Limerick to go forward to the grand final in Dublin on April 14. Fethard supporters were delighted when their local entry ‘Connect’ was also chosen – a fantastic achievement for the Fethard school again in this creative competition, which encourages designers to create couture clothes from recycled materials.

Below is a short video of Emma Cronin modelling ‘Connect’ at the regional final in Limerick

We wish the pupils and their entry, ‘Connect’, the best of luck in Dublin in the national final on April 14. Voting for this part of the competition will begin soon through the Junk Kouture Facebook page.

Heading out to Noan east for the New Tipperary gathering at the Monument on Saturday last, I was expecting a nice gathering, but to my surprise we had over forty faithful from that neck of the woods to give homage to the folks in the area from another time. The wonderful children from Ballinure school read the Proclamation immediately after Ned McCormack raised the Tricolour to rapturous applause. Our National Anthem was then performed followed and a rendering of ‘Slievenamon’ to conclude the first part of the programme.

The gathering then proceeded with the annual ceremony to the memory of the New Tipperary Rangers hurling and football teams of yesteryears. Our M.C. Steve McCormack then spoke to those present, reminding the younger generation of the safe and lovely area that they were privileged to call home. He welcomed Roger Shanahan to the ceremony, one of the few survivors of the great winning team of the fifties. Marie Crean recited a decade of the Rosary for all our intentions and for those who had died in the past twelve months.
Sean Watts from Killenaule thanked the people who organised the gathering and Michael Bulfin thanked everyone for coming along and invited all present back to Ballinure hall for tea and refreshments. Rural Ireland is safe and well. – (Miceál McCormack)

Creative Minds Productions, Clonmel bring Brian Friel's highly acclaimed play ‘Lovers’ to Clonacody House, Fethard on March 18, and 19. The play is directed and produced by Jennifer Williams and Trevor Somers. Admission is €25 and includes a light supper. Bookings on 087 1689167.

Broken into two parts the first section ‘Winners’ follows the story of two teenaged lovers, Mag (Sinead O’Donovan) and Joe (Daniel Traas) who are expecting a baby. However, the pregnancy occurs out of wedlock, which, at the time of ‘Lovers’ being written, was a major issue. They are both asked to leave their schools out of disgrace for what they have done. The narrators (Rosie Mai Fitzgerald and Tara Gearon) provide the audience with insight into the cultural and social context of 1960s, Ballymore.

The second part ‘Losers’ is a play about middle aged lovers, Hanna (Helen Fitzgerald) abd Andy (Trevor Somers) who are trying to make a relationship while having Hanna's mother, Mrs Wilson (Olive Thompson), and Cissy (Jennifer Williams), the next door neighbour, watching them constantly. Mrs Wilson and Cissy are very Catholic and do not think it is appropriate for Hanna's and Andy's relationship to continue. Mrs Wilson tries to break up their relationship by constantly ringing her bell, and wanting prayers. Can love overcome all or will there always be winners and losers?
