Saratoga wishes to rekindle connections with Fethard
Fethard & Killusty Community Council received the following letter in December, from Thomas N. Wood, III, Town of Saratoga Supervisor, New York 12871.
The Town of Saratoga encourages the Saratoga County Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) to rekindle our Town's Compact with your Town of Fethard & Killusty in County Tipperary, Ireland. The Ancient Order of Hibernians was the lead organisation in joining our Towns under our Town of Saratoga Resolution of June 11, 2007.
The overarching concept of this Compact shall always be about shared experiences and promotion of Horse, History, Youth and Economic Development. The Saratoga AOH has initiated a lottery among its members. The winner will have air fare covered in 2021 to encourage and support a member to visit your community. COVID restrictions will dictate any specific date of the visit. We hope you can again join us in having some worthy activities pursued in 2021.
Respectfully,
Thomas N. Wood, III, Town of Saratoga Supervisor
cc: Timothy McNulty, President, Saratoga Ancient Order of Hibernians, Saratoga Springs.
First contact made with Saratoga before the recession Mike Cahill, a relative of the late Eileen Cahill, Fethard, photographed with Jennifer Conte for Saratoga Cornell Cooperative Extension Agency of Saratoga County Equine Program, after their first meeting on September 6, 2006, to discuss a proposed Fethard-Saratoga civic exchange.
Back in 2007, Fethard & Killusty Community Council were in communication with 'Fethard man’ Mike Cahill and his friend Dave Cummings (President of the Saratoga Chapter), in exploring a sister city connection with Saratoga. Thanks to the dedicated work of Mike and Dave, the Saratoga Board voted unanimously 5-0 to invite Fethard to enter a sister city relationship at a meeting on June 11, 2007.
Unfortunately, the Irish economy entered a severe recession in 2008, and then entered an economic depression in 2009, so all developments were put on hold.
Visiting Fethard from Saratoga on April 26, 2008, are L to R: Dave Cummings and Mike Cahill, photographed in Coolmore with the world-famous stallion 'Galileo' – the most successful source of Group 1 winners in thoroughbred history.
This year, 2021, the Community Council hold their meetings on Zoom due to 'Lockdown' restrictions. From discussions already held, the committee are very happy to rekindle our links with Saratoga. The committee are also excited about exploring the various opportunities available to both communities and feel Fethard & Killusty would strongly benefit and have a lot to gain by this shared promotion of our Horse, History, Youth and Economic Development.

Fethard Youth Club Regional Variety Show, 2002
Saturday night, November 23, 2002, saw Fethard Youth Club host a really wonderful evening of great entertainment and laughter in Fethard Ballroom, when clubs from Cappamore, Thurles, Tipperary Town, Cashel, Oola, Annacarty and Fethard competed in the Annual Youth Club Regional Variety Show.
A variety of acts were performed before a packed hall and Fethard did their club proud, winning one and coming second twice out of approximately 45 acts. Fintan Maher won with his Solo Instrumental act and with Ashley McCormack, Sara Kennedy, Tracy Coady, Helen Frewen, Samantha Sheehan, John Hannigan, Philip Ryan, Fintan Maher, Tom Gilpin, Chris Whyte and Kyle O'Donnell doing a version of ‘Summer Nights’. They scooped 2nd prize in the Group Singing section.
The girls, comprising of Ashley McCormack, Sara Kennedy and Tracy Coady did their club proud once again and won 2nd prize in the disco dancing section.
It was a great night for all clubs concerned and once again Fethard were complimented on the good behaviour and good spirit amongst their members present. There was a friendly atmosphere amongst all the clubs with each club cheering and clapping the 150-170 entrants competing on the night. These are some photographs taken on the night.

New County Development Plan for 2022-2028
Tipperary County Council has commenced the preparation of a new County Development Plan for Tipperary. To facilitate public engagement/submissions, a dedicated ‘County Development Plan’ webpage has been set up and will remain ‘live’ during the two-year process. As the Plan progresses, the site will be routinely up-dated with reports, published submissions, public engagement guides and videos etc.
The web site can be accessed CLICKING HERE. The website is an excellent resource and point of contact for the public and stakeholders, and I would appreciate it if you could circulate the link as opportunities arise.
