Presentation Convent purchased for Fethard community

Fethard Presentation Convent and grounds purchased for Fethard Community

Fethard & District Day Care Centre CLG are delighted to confirm that we have agreed the purchase of the Presentation Convent, Fethard. Our respective solicitors are firming up the deeds and transfer and are hopeful that all will be completed in January 2022.

We plan on moving our existing Day Centre facilities at the Tirry Centre, down to the Convent building as soon as possible in the New Year. This will allow us to offer extra Day Centre spaces, while affording our elders the luxury of walking safely in the beautiful gardens. We also hope to create a ‘Pandemic Proof’ environment so that our elders will never need be isolated again, as they were last year.

Members of Tipperary County Council photographed in the Presentation Convent Chapel on Wednesday, June 16, 2021, when they were invited to Fethard to meet members of Fethard Day Care Centre and view the Presentation Convent Building to discuss future possibilities of funding and best usage of the building for future sustainability. Also in attendance were Joe Kenny, Chairman Fethard & Killusty Community Council; and Fionnuala O’Sullivan, Fethard & District Day Care Centre.

Our architect, Mr Kenneth Hennessy, is currently preparing the planning application to facilitate this move. The entire building is listed as a protected structure by the local authority and considered to be of special interest from an architectural, historical, cultural, and social point of view.  This presents a once in a generation opportunity for our community, as the campus on 2.5 acres, offers a wide range of possibilities to enhance our town and its environs. Some of the options being considered include supported independent living units, homes for people with disabilities, and remote working hubs. The Day Care facility will only occupy approximately twenty percent of the campus.

We have already received mortgage approval from Clann Credo (Community Loan Finance) to complete the sale. We wish to acknowledge that the Presentation Sisters have been very generous and supportive in agreeing to a selling price that amounts to a quarter of the market value of the property. Fethard and District Day Care Centre CLG is committed to continuing the legacy of service and support that epitomised the 150 years’ service the Presentation Sisters gave to Fethard community and the surrounding district.

Our intention is to avail of all grants and supports possible, and the current draft County Development Plan being processed appears to support our ambitions in that regard. We look forward to working closely with Tipperary County Council, HSE (Health Service Executive), and South Tipperary Development CLG (Leader), to fulfil what this campus has to offer Fethard and its surrounds. We will need community support as all grants come with a co-funding clause, and we need to ensure our Day Care Centre is sufficiently funded, as our regular past fundraisers were curtailed due to Covid restrictions. We have launched our ‘Granny Split the Pot Lottery’ before Christmas, with a monthly draw for those entered. Our next draw will be held on the last weekend in January. Envelopes are available from Fethard & District Day Care Centre, local shops, Killenaule Post Office and The Thatch Pub, Cloneen. Wishing you all a very happy and safe New Year.

The company directors are: Liam Hayes (chairman), Mollie Standbridge (secretary), Bobbi Holohan (joint treasurer), Fionnuala O’Sullivan (joint treasurer), Mary O’Connell and Joe Kenny. The directors would welcome your suggestions and ideas for consideration as to the optimum use of the campus. Please contact any of the above directors or deliver to the Tirry Community Centre marked for the attention of The Directors, Fethard Day Centre, Barrack Street, Fethard. All will be carefully considered as part of our feasibility study, which will begin in early 2022.
