Robert Power & ten-piece band, coming to Clonacody

Clonacody House have announced that the enigmatic Mr Robert Power and his ten-piece-band are coming to play, in Clonacody House, Fethard, on Saturday, August 14.

Organiser Mia Carney, is very excited about the event and, after having the absolute pleasure of seeing Robert and his band live on three occasions, was each time, overwhelmed by how amazingly talented they are. Robert’s lyrics, the vocal harmonies, the lift and swell of the music as it moves from a jazzy easy listening, to folk and then a reggae beat, is just sublime. Mia feels safe in saying, “There’s nothing else like them out there!”

Tickets are available now, they are €30 each and payable by Revolut or cash. You must have a ticket in advance of the gig, as numbers are limited owing to the current restrictions. There will be more information coming out in the next few days but for now, it’s Robert Power playing for us on Saturday, August 14, 2021. Contact Mia Carney for tickets.

Robert Power is a Dublin based independent artist from the town of Carrick-on-Suir, who has worked in various mediums. His music and songwriting has been described by Hot Press Magazine as “powerful, heartfelt and thought-provoking”.

Evan's garden for the Bees
Evan Delaney got more than he bargained for when he planted some wildflower seeds to help propagate the Bees at his home in Redcity, Fethard. Not long after germination, the blossoms appeared, which also appealed to Evan's two nieces, Emily and Anna, who were quickly out to join the bees and make one happy family in their new colourful home with 'The Birds and the Bees! Well done Evan!

Recollections of Fethard Threshing Days by Jim Trehy

Jim Trehy, Annesgift, recalls having a chance conversation with a local farmer some years ago who showed him a diary kept by an uncle. He said one item in particular might be of interest. It read, “March 1937, paid Jim Trehy 27 shillings for three days threshing.”   That brought back many memories to Jim, of times long gone and the commencement of the threshing season when the steam engine and threshing mill were rolled out of their sheds to be overhauled for the threshing season ahead.

A week or two later, the season would start and the journey round the farms would begin, threshing wheat, oats and barley for the farmers of the district. The threshing season lasted usually until the end of December and sometimes into January when the steel-wheeled monsters would reappear again. By then, the farms around Fethard, Moyglass, Killusty, Knockelly, Kilmore and Thorney Bridge would have been covered and all the grain would be safely stored or sold to Ranks Ireland through the local agent, P.J. Henehan. After returning to base, the engine and mill would be checked for problems, listed by the engine driver and mill man. The manufacturers, Ransome Simms and Jeffrey, Ipswich would be contacted for spare parts and their fitter would spend a few days overhauling the machines if necessary, during the summer, making ready for the next season. This routine came to a halt in 1945 when the more compact tractors were taking over from steam.

Newsletter articles are now invited for this year!

As we pass half-way through 2021, a reminder to consider writing an article for this year’s Emigrants Newsletter seems even more appropriate. Jennifer Fogarty's memories of Newbridge on her Facebook page (above), is a perfect example of what we're looking for . . . what about it Jennifer?

So please drop us a line and some photographs and we will do our best to include them in this year’s issue due to go to printers in early November. Days fly into weeks and weeks into months, so what better time to start than now. Articles and photos can be submitted by email to: emigrantsnewsletter@gmail.com or by post to Joe Kenny, Rocklow Road, Fethard, Co. Tipperary, E91 XR26.

Fethard Macra Annual Harvest Dance held in the Town Hall, Fethard, on Thursday night, September 24, 1964. The dance was a huge success both socially and financially. Patrons travelled from many parts of Ireland for the event. The adjudicators for the Harvest Queen Competition had a very difficult task in coming to their final decision. The Chairman of the Fethard Macra na Feirme, Mr Ted O'Brien, presented the winner Miss Loretta McDonald, Killeshin, Co. Carlow, with the 'Macra Harvest Queen 1964' sash together with a cheque for £10. The dance concluded at 1am and everybody present enjoyed a wonderful night. The music was supplied by the popular Pat Mac and his McNamaramen. Members of the committee are photographed above Back L to R: Rody Holohan, ?, Gus Walton, ?, ?.
