The 'First of May' in Fethard
This version of the Bee Gees hit 'First of May' is sung by Sarah Brightman from a 'Christmas in Vienna' concert in 1997. There are many suggestions as to what the song is about . . . and being the 'First of May' you may also have your own. One person's opinion was, "It was written by Barry Gibb, but not about his first love, as many people believe. But about their first dog, which arrived on the first of May. A beautiful song, wonderfully written, to be interpreted as if it were about young love, or even brothers or sisters." Old Fethard Town – a poem This Fethard poem was handed in to us by a long time parish resident who wishes to remain anonymous. OLD FETHARD TOWN Old Fethard in Tipperary, is a place I know so well, I was born and reared beside it, and it holds me in its spell. Its lofty walls still guard this town, I'm proud to call my own, I always feel I must come back, wherever I may roam. When I wander round the parish, I see sights I can't forget, The beauty of her fields and hills, I've not seen better yet. From Market Hill I see it still, when evening shadows fall, And off to the north you'll surely see, the hills round Killenaule. Coolmoyne, Coolmore and Prospect, are places I must go, Red City and Kiltinan, simply sets my heart aglow. Brodeen, Garrinch and Barrettstown, are ever lovely still, I feel so close to heaven when, I see Kilnockin Hill. Climb to the top of Slievenamon, its beauty I well know, The vale of South Tipperary, stretches out for miles below. The sights that are before me, are the greatest I have seen, I've never seen the likes of them, no matter where I've been. Good friends I meet on Main Street, as many times before, They shake my hand in friendship, could I ever ask for more. As I walk around her lovely streets, I always feel I’m home, No matter where I wandered, on land, or sea of foam. Old Slievenamon smiles gently, on the fairest place I know, Clashawley’s lovely waters, how peacefully they flow. From Rocklow down to Fethard Town, Killusty to Monroe, The walls of Fethard call me back, wherever I may roam.
