Mary Hurley (centre) recalls her lifelong friendship with the late Catriona Boland (right).

Mary Hurley (organiser), shares what this walk means to her

Catriona Hackett and I grew up together. We went to school and did our homework together, we went to England on holidays together, where she was pick-pocketed, but she made sure to tell every relation we visited and she ended up with more money than that was lost!

They were great times and we had a wonderful friendship. Moving on, we both had our families and weren’t always meeting as life gets in the way. But whenever anything major happened, Catriona was there by my side. She was the most loyal friend anyone could wish for.

Then along came Catriona’s illness, which she battled, always with a smile on her face and won her first round. Then, after 2 years, I became ill and she was my rock. She called every week, she’d answer every question I had with reassurance and guidance. She always made me feel better.

We had some great days out, although a lot of them involved going to and from hospitals, we still had the best days. It was a pleasure to be in her company. I miss that so much! As I finished my treatment, we heard the shocking news that Catriona was ill again. It was devastating for her, her family, friends, but again she smiled and said I’ll be grand.

Sadly and tragically that wasn’t the case and I lost my great friend in February this year. I wanted to do something in her memory, so decided on a walk that would involve both Fethard, Drangan and Cloneen. A joint effort, a coming together to remember someone as wonderful as Catriona. So hopefully on this Sunday, August 30, we will honour her memory and walk in friendship together to raise funds for a unit that treated us both — The Clonmel Oncology Unit —who go above and beyond in the care of cancer patients. Catriona will always be remembered in there. She will forever be in my heart.
– (Mary Hurley)

Emmet's appeal to support Fethard Friend
Alannah and Martin Sheehan photographed with their three wonderful children; Finn (5), Luca (3) and Phoebe (9 months).
Alannah and Martin Sheehan photographed with their three wonderful children; Finn (5), Luca (3) and Phoebe (9 months).

Emmet Burke, formerly Red City, Fethard, asked us to publish this appeal in support of an old friend of his and past community member, Martin Sheehan of the Killusty (Cloran) Sheehans, now living in North Tipperary.  Martin and his wife Alannah recently received heart-breaking news. A couple of weeks after the birth of their third child and first daughter, Phoebe (9 months), Alannah started getting headaches. After a couple of visits to the doctor she was diagnosed with a Grade 4 Cancerous Brain tumour, also known as Glioblastoma Multiforme. This is a very rare incurable cancer and was told she has only a 50 percent chance of surviving past two years.

Martin has had to give up his work to take care of the family. Since this started in February this year, financial liabilities are growing and this week they have finally reached out for help via a GoFundMe page set up by their close friend Jennifer Corcoran.

Alannah and Martin are parents to three wonderful children; Finn (5), Luca (3) and Phoebe (9 months) and would really appreciate any help to raise vital funds towards their medical expenses to help prolong her life! To support Alannah on her ‘Go Fund Me’ page CLICK HERE
