St. Vincent de Paul Christmas Collection
For the estimated 50,000+ homes who will contact the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVP) this winter the words of the popular song “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” are totally at odds with their circumstances. For them Christmas can be the most worrying time of the year.
For the estimated 50,000+ homes who will contact the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVP) this winter the words of the popular song “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year” are totally at odds with their circumstances. For them Christmas can be the most worrying time of the year.

We would like to remind our many loyal supporters that our annual Church Gate Collection will take place on weekending  December 11 and 12, this year. As this is our only public fundraiser, we are happy to say that we are always very well supported by our donors. However, Covid restrictions has led to less people attending Mass, so this year, we will provide envelopes in which donations can be inserted and given to any member of the Fethard Vincent de Paul Conference.

Donations can also be sent by mail to: The Treasurer, St. Vincent de Paul, Fethard. Please do not send cash in the post. Receipts will be sent to anyone who also includes their name and address with donation and asks for a receipt. Many people prefer to donate online, using the national St. Vincent de Paul website. If you wish, you can put ‘Fethard’in the section marked 'Specific location to help', when making the online donation, and it will be sent back to us for local use.

We were delighted to be in a position to still help people over the past year and a half to alleviate some of the effects of Covid on families in need. Any person who needs our assistance this Christmas should contact any member as soon as possible. Confidentiality is guaranteed.

Last year we celebrated 125 years of continuous work in Fethard. This is only possible because of you – the community – giving us the backing that allowed us to survive. We once again say ‘thanks’ for your help, we are really grateful.

Fethard's IFC County Final hopes dashed!
On Saturday last in Littleton, Fethard’s chance of reaching the 2021 Intermediate Football County Final came to an end when Drom & Inch – a big strong physical team – scored 0-6 points in the first half to Fethard’s, 0-1, scored by Cathal O’Mahony from a free.

Very little went right for Fethard in the first half, with seven wides, some of which were very scorable.  Conditions were heavy going underfoot. After the interval we improved, up to the second water-break we scored two points, one from a free by Cathal O’Mahony, the second, and first from play, scored by Joedy Sheehan in the 45th minute. Joedy was playing at centre back. In the same period Drom scored two points, leaving the score 0-8 to 0-3.

We were more in the game in the final quarter with scores just hard to come by. Brian Healy scored two points within a minute from play, however, Drom also scored two points to run out winners on the final score: Drom & Inch 0-10, Fethard 0-5.

Fethard team and scorers: Jack Dolan, Shane Neville, Paul Moloney, Alan O’Connor, Cathal O’Mahony 0-2 F, Joedy Sheehan 0-1, Brian Delahunty, David Hayes, Willie Morgan, Michael Quinlan, Brian Healy 0-2, Darragh Hurley, Jack Purcell, Ryan Walsh, and Conor Harrington. Subs Used: Peter Wall, Gavin Fitzgerald, and Jamie McCormack.

Rev Robert Hamilton (c1597-c1660)
We’ve had the following request from Jonathan Gray, Dungannon, Co Tyrone, who is looking for any information on the following:

Jinathan is currently researching Rev. Robert Hamilton who was Rector of various parishes in Co. Tipperary including Rathcoole from 1623.

Robert seems to have graduated M.A. from Glasgow University in 1616 and the following year was installed as Rector of Killeeshil, Co Tyrone. The post plantation period left some parishes disjointed and Robert was unsuccessful in an appeal to the Irish Commission of 1622 to secure the original bounds of the Parish. He was then installed as Rector of Rathcoole, Co Tipperary the following year and by 1629 he appears to have secured other parishes and vicarages within his administration.

By the time of the 1641 Rebellion, Robert Hamilton had probably developed considerable personal wealth for a rural Rector and this is seen in his deposition of 1642 which can be read via the Trinity College website by CLICKING HERE. His deposition amounts to some sixteen pages with his signature at the foot.

It would appear that Robert did not substantially recover his property as his widow, Margaret née Montgomery, died in March 1659 in Kilwinning, Ayrshire, Scotland with little or no estate. Interestingly a prerogative will for Robert dated December 13, 1661, existed in the Irish Archives and thankfully it was indexed by Sir William Betham (Ulster of Arms) before the original was lost in the Four Courts. I have attached an image (below) of his note of the Will which names a spinster daughter Jane as sole recipient.

The Will which names a spinster daughter Jane as sole recipient.

I was wondering if the Historical Society, or anyone else, has ever come across any mention of him in local records. I suspect he was primarily Rector of the Old Rathcoole Church, just north of Fethard
