Tommy Healy, Plymouth, England, and formerly from The Green, sent us the following information:
"
I believe that the year is 1950. I made my first holy communion in 1951, some of the boys featured in this photo were also in my class in the secondary school as the Leaving Cert photo of 1960, which appears in some editions of the annual Fethard Emigrants' Newsletter, shows. Damien McLellan and I were the youngest in the 1960 photo and we seem to have ‘stolen’ into that year group. Tom Mackey, Philip Ward, Lory Dineen, Richard Butler and Sean Evans appear in this present photo but were in my class at secondary school so the First Communion photo above is, I am sure, from 1950.
Looking at both the faces from above photo and those from the Leaving Cert one, I am reminded of lines from W B Yeats’ poem:
“In Memory of Major Robert Gregory”
They were the close companions many a year,
A portion of my mind and life, as it were,
Now their breathless faces seem to look
Out of some old picture book.
The last five mentioned are sadly no longer with us, of the eleven who sat Leaving Cert in 1960 just four remain, Damien McLellan, Tom Burke, Rae Molloy and myself. Thank you Joe for publishing this photograph, I wonder how many of these are still with us. – Tommy Healy
Further to my email of yesterday (above), the photo also features Richard O’Brien, Paddy Moloney and Ned Connolly. Richard settled in Dublin and died there in 2006, Ned Connolly died some years ago too. Paddy Moloney, I believe, went into banking and managed a branch of AIB, I am told, in England. I am also told that he had a holiday house in North Devon, seventy miles from here. Where he is now I have no idea. Richard and Paddy were at the secondary school until Inter Cert when both left to pursue their studies elsewhere, Richard at Rockwell College and Paddy, I seem to remember, at a college in Newbridge. This photo has given me a severe dose of nostalgia.
– With good wishes, Tommy Healy
Newsletter articles are now invited for this year!
As we pass half-way through 2021, a reminder to consider writing an article for this year’s Emigrants Newsletter seems even more appropriate. Jennifer Fogarty's memories of Newbridge on her Facebook page, is a perfect example of what we're looking for . . . what about it Jennifer?
So please drop us a line and some photographs and we will do our best to include them in this year’s issue due to go to printers in early November. Days fly into weeks and weeks into months, so what better time to start than now. Articles and photos can be submitted by email to: emigrantsnewsletter@gmail.com or by post to Joe Kenny, Rocklow Road, Fethard, Co. Tipperary, E91 XR26.
