‘The Year of 21’ finishes on a high note!
'The Year of 21' last performance in the Abymill Theatre, Fethard. on Friday, November 19, 2021
'The Year of 21' a scene from the last performance in the Abymill Theatre, Fethard. on Friday, November 19, 2021

Fionn MacCumhaill Players closed its very successful run of ‘The Year of 21’ on Friday, November 19, at the Abymill Theatre in Fethard, with a full house. The play went down a treat at every venue played on its recent tour. The Players would like to thank everyone who supported their production, and from feedback received, they are happy to conclude that all patrons enjoyed the production.

The play, written by Brian Clancy and directed by Anne Williamson, dealt with life in Cloneen in the year 1921. The plot was based on a true story in history of the shooting of George Lysaght, played so well by Pat Egan. We also saw great performances from Debbie Duggan, Grace O’Meara and Lily Clancy – the Lysaght family.

The excellent house staff were efficient and encouraging, bringing humour to an otherwise serious play. Well worth mentioning the following impressive performances from Esther Byrne (Bridget Lowry), James St John (Mick Lowry) and Conor Kelly (Matt Delaney). Toddy McNamara and Mark Fitzgerald were hilarious in their roles as farmhands Widgery and Goggy.
The Volunteers, Joe Strappe and Peggy O'Brien, were trigger happy but did their duty as expected, while Gerry Dorney played the very officious Mr Shee.

John Norton as Fr. O’Brien

The narration by Labhaoise McNamara was wonderful, depicting a ‘Mother Ireland’ figure watching over the scenes portrayed. John Norton as Fr. O’Brien had the audience captivated in the spotlight, reminding us of the fear brought to so many souls in the church, one-hundred-years ago. Rody Delaney, the nasty character in the play, was played to perfection by Eugene O’Meara, joined by Will Condon as Dinny, and Alan Bourke as Ryan, who all had the audience in the palm of their hands.

"Spies and Informers Beware!'

A great night's entertainment and a great play they had its timing perfect before the dreaded covid started to come back. All in all, a great performance all round. Congratulations!

Fethard – Where the past meets the present.

DISCOVERFETHARD.COM

Fethard is a hidden gem with a unique story to tell and a significant place in Irish history. The 13th Century walled town weaves heritage into its very fabric; the walls and towers lent a real splendour to an already pretty town, and round every corner, there’s something else to see.

You can take a walk along the River Clashawley at Valley Park which is super rich in biodiversity, stroll through the graveyard and look down through the battlements or get up to date with the history of all things equine in what is widely known as horse country. Even better, pay a visit to the Fethard Horse Country Museum where you can check our what makes a winning racehorse.

Fethard has a wide range of cafes, bars and restaurants to cater for all tastes so you can choose from quick bites to Michelin starred meals, or pack up a picnic from the local deli and pick a spot to take in the views.

We love to spend our days in Fethard; we think you will too.
