‘In the Footsteps of Nano Nagle’

The Fethard Historical Society has organised a trip to Cork on Saturday, June 25, 2022. The bus leaves from outside the Town Hall Fethard at 8am and we hope to return to Fethard at around 7pm. The trip costs €55; a light lunch is included. When booking please let us know if you have any special dietary requirements. Please book on or before Wednesday, June 22, by contacting Pat Looby 087 690 8330 or Mary Hanrahan 087 9009722. All are welcome, members and non-members alike.
‘In the Footsteps of Nano Nagle’ will see us visit Nano Nagle Place in Cork City, the location of Nano’s first school. It is a place that celebrates Nano Nagle’s vision of empowerment through education, community inclusion and spiritual engagement for a contemporary world. We will have a guided tour of the museum and time to explore the complex which also comprises heritage rooms, gardens, the Good Day Deli, a gift shop and a book shop.
Then it’s on to Nano Nagle’s birthplace in Ballygriffin outside Mallow where we will have a light lunch followed by a Heritage and Organic Garden tour. It will begin with a visit to the heritage room with a guided introduction to the Nano Nagle story followed by a guided walk around the grounds and the environmental features of the gardens. Once again, there should be time to explore at leisure after the guided tour.
The final stage of our trip is a visit to the Doneraile Court Gardens where one can enjoy magnificent Capability Brown style vistas, specimen tree avenues, formal still water ponds and view the various herds of deer grazing alongside rare breed Kerry cattle.

Anyone for a game of tennis ?
This week we have a selection of photographs taken some years ago of locals playing tennis in the old court behind Joe Coffey's house 'The Lilacs' in Burke Street. There may have also been a Tennis Court at the back of Hayes' house, when the Patrician Brothers lived there, which may explain one of the photos. If you have any comments, memories or any further information, we would love to hear from you. Email: fethardnews@gmail.com
