Winner of Fethard Rugby Club's first 'Split The Bucket' draw, Collette Perry, being presented her prize from Michael McCarthy, manager. A huge thank you to Vincent Hourihane and all his staff for hosting our competition.

Fethard Rugby Club are delighted to announce our new Split The Bucket fundraiser and have enjoyed great support and positivity from lots of local business in hosting our competition.

Sport is very important in Fethard and our surrounding areas. The benefits are clear every week at training when Fethard Rugby Club is filled with happy young people, socialising, getting exercise and learning skills that will benefit them in their other sports and in their lives for the future.

How our fundraiser works: the club receives half the total collected each week from entries and the drawn winner will receive the other half. We have buckets and envelopes available at lots of local participating businesses (listed below). Each entry is €2 and can be placed with your contact details, in the envelope and bucket provided at participating businesses.

Every Friday all buckets will be collected and a winner drawn – so the more entries the higher the prize money each week. Participating Businesses are: Ian Meaghers Daybreak; Dooks Fine Foods; Rays Barbers; Fethard Post Office; McCarthys Bar; O'Sullivans Pharmacy; Reflections Hair Salon; Allas Patisserie; Daltons Pharmacy; Kenny’s Centra Fethard; Allens Meats; Daybreak Clerihan; Centra Killenaule; Killenaule Pharmacy; and Bourke’s Daybreak Killenaule. The hounds were kennelled at Grove up to 1826, with William Barton as Master.

The equine industry are now in turmoil due to insurance cover being pulled, leaving hundreds of jobs on the line over the insurance cover crisis. Most hunt clubs in Ireland are involved in running amateur or point-to-point racing across the country. These are organised by local hunt club committees in conjunction with the Irish Horse Racing Board.

Two point-to-point meetings, due to be held by the Wicklow Hunt and Tipperary Foxhounds at Lisronagh, were already cancelled due to their insurance policies expiring and not being renewed by the insurers. Several other hunt clubs across the country are now facing having to cancel planned meetings when their policies come up for renewal.

Fethard win South U17 Football Final
The first of the new format for Minor (now U17 B) Football South Tipperary Championship was played on last Saturday, November 27, in Grangemockler on a harsh bitter morning, thankfully dry.  This was the first meeting of Fethard and Cahir in a Minor B Final.  Cahir’s last success was in 2012 while Fethard’s last success was back in 2007. Both teams did meet in the league section with Fethard coming out on top.  In comparison, scores were very slow coming on Saturday last. Fethard had two points scored in the first quarter, the first a free on Jack Quinlan pointed by Sean Moroney; the second in the tenth minute, a point from half-forward Shane Lawrence, leaving the score at the first water break, Fethard 0-2 to Cahir 0-0.

Fethard then introduced Mark Neville who added to the forward attacks, his brother, Conor Neville, made a great run from centerfield to score a fine point. Fethard had their next chance when Sean Moroney scored a point that brought the sides level at the interval on 0-4 each.  The game was evenly matched
After the break Fethard introduced Bobby Harris and the pace of the game came to life. Fethard were first to score with a point from Oisín Ryan.  It was followed with end-to-end excitement and some spectators getting quite vocal. After another exchange of points for Fethard, a free by Sean Moroney brought the teams level for the fifth time at 0-6 each.  In the fortieth minute Fethard got an intervention when James Phelan intercepted a Cahir attack and worked the counter pass to the inrushing Matt Coen who kicked a wonderful goal. Within a minute Sean Moroney scored a point and Fethard were now four points up. Only another minute had passed when Jack Quinlan got his first point of the day after changing from full forward to midfield where he impressed to leave the score Fethard 1-8, Cahir 0-7.

Fethard’s ‘gander’ was up on resumption, and they added one point from a free by Sean Moroney and within a minute a second goal, this time from an excellent overlap by Liam Kiely.  During the remainder of the game we only had an exchange of points – Fethard’s from Jack Quinlan – before the final whistle. Fethard were deserving winners they now meet the North runners-up in the county quarterfinal next weekend.

Stand out players for Fethard were Dara O’Meara, Darragh Spillane, James Phelan, Conor Neville, Oisín Ryan, Shane Lawrence, Sean Moroney, Matt Coen, Mark Neville, and Jack Quinlan.

Fethard team and scorers: Ben Allen, Tom Murray, Dara O’Meara, Michael O’Meara, Liam Kiely 1-0, Darragh Spillane, Michael James Phelan, Conor Neville 0-1, Oisín Ryan 0-1, Shane Lawrence 0-1, Sean Moroney (captain) 0-5 (4F), Charlie Hackett, James Barry, Jack Quinlan 0-2, Matt Coen 1-0. Subs used were Mark Neville, Bobby Harris, and Andrew Connorton. Other subs: Rory O’Mahony, Charlie Walsh, Gavin Neville, Michael Flanagan, Danny Shelly, John Lacy, and Jack Davey. Referee was Paddy Ivors (Ballingarry).

Back L to R: Gerry Murphy, Colm Kehoe, Willie O'Meara, Brian Burke, Michael O'Riordan, Chris Coen, Roger Mehta, Diarmuid Hackett, David Kane. Front L to R: Kevin Burke, Liam Ryan, Gerry Horan, Colm Hackett, Willie Morrissey, Paul Mullins, Adrian Pollard and John O'Connor.  Tommy also believes that Fethard beat Clonoulty in both finals. Clonoulty later objected to John O’Connor after the first final and thinks that he played on the team for the second final (without John), and they beat them by more. This was a seriously good team and seven or eight went on to win county senior football medals with Fethard.
