Died Recently
The death has occurred on June 1, 2015, of Christopher ‘Tiffer’ Morris, Everardsgrange, Fethard / South Green, Kildare Town, Kildare.
He will be deeply missed by Michael (Mouse), Shanny and Jamie, other relatives and large circle of friends.
Funeral service takes place in Holy Trinity Church of Ireland, Fethard, on Wednesday, June 17, at 2pm. No Flowers please
Fethard Community Fun Day this Sunday
Fethard Business & Tourism Group will hold their ‘Community Fun Day’ on this Sunday, June 14, with all the usual FREE Fun Fair entertainment including Bouncy Castles, Bungee Run, Trampolines, Climbing Wall plus lots, lots more. Fethard Rugby Club stall will have their barbecue and refreshments stall, Country Markets will have various produce and visiting market stalls, and the traditional Dog Show at 3.30pm will also take place with lots of categories and prizes. Entries for the Dog Show will be taken from 3pm.
This year, again, a voucher system for free burgers and ice cream will be distributed to all local Primary Schools in the Fethard vicinity. Other events include a GAA Juvenile Blitz, Duck Race (1pm) in aid of Patrician Presentation Secondary School Fund. Live music in the afternoon will be provided by the new exciting stompin' blues band Mojo’d. Leading the charge with their diverse background in rock, country, funk and soul is, Roger Mehta, vocals and percussion, Seamus Hayes, guitars, Val Whelan, drums, Oreste Perillo, bass, and David Corbett, harmonica.
The newly refurbished Tholsel Building (Town Hall) will also be open for viewing on completion of the first phase of the building restoration.
Free Historic Tours this Saturday
This Saturday, June 13, there will be free Guided Walks of historic Fethard at 11am and again at 2.30pm. Tours take one and a half hours and there is no need to book, just turn up on time at the footbridge in The Valley. Further information if needed from tel: 086 3905373.
On Sunday, June 14, during Fun Day, Fethard Historical Society will also hold a ‘Heritage Day’ (free) in Old Holy Trinity Church with displays and information on some of the ‘big’ historic stories from Fethard’s past. This year’s ‘Historic Art Project’ material from the two parish Primary Schools will be on display. All very welcome.
Fethard Art and Craft Expo 2015
The Sliabh na Mon Artisans will hold their ‘Fethard Art and Craft Expo 2015’ on this coming Sunday, June 14, from 11.30am to 5.15pm in Fethard Ballroom where they will be promoting local Irish Hand crafts, fine arts, wood sculpture, local honey, knitwear and various other products. There will also be a display of paintings from artists, Tony O'Malley, Kevin Sharkey, Kingerlee, Ger Casey, and Cope. All are welcome and refreshments available on the day.
Class of 1990 Reunion in July
The Fethard class of 1990 are holding a reunion in Burke's Bar, Fethard on Saturday, July 25, 2015. Anyone who was in that class at any stage from Junior infants to Leaving Cert is more than welcome to attend. Fethard & District Rugby Club officers elected
Fethard & District Rugby Club recently held their AGM in the clubhouse where the following officers were elected: Paul Kavanagh (president), Pat O’Donnell (chairman), Liam Hayes (secretary), Kieran Butler (treasurer), Teresa Kavanagh (child welfare officer), Paul Kavanagh (director of rugby), Pat O’Donnell (East Munster representative), Michael Knightly (minis co-ordinator), Valerie Connolly (tickets co-ordinator), and Willie Ruttle (public relations officer).
On Sunday, June 14, the rugby club will run the Festival Barbecue at Fethard Town Wall and a church gate collection will be held at St. Marys Church, Killenaule, on the same date. Your continued support would be greatly appreciated.
U14 girls win Community Games county football final
Fethard Girls U14 football team that beat Cahir in the Community Games County Final, played in Semple Stadium. Congratulations to the girls U14 football team on their fine victory over Cahir in the Community Games county final played in Semple Stadium on Bank Holiday Monday. Manager Micheál Spillane predicted they would be ‘singing in the rain’ and how right he was. Cahir had a good strong team but Fethard answered every call to take the title in horrible weather conditions and become the first team to receive the Joan O’Connor Perpetual Trophy (full report in the sports section). The Fethard Killusty team have now been drawn to play Beara, Co. Cork, in the next round at Fermoy on Tuesday, June 23, at 7.30pm.
The team’s gold medal winners were: Ciara Connolly, Laura Kiely, Caoimhe O’Meara, Rachel Prout, Lucy Spillane, Sophie Delaney, Carrie Davey, Ava Hickey, Kaylin O’Donnell, Hannah Dolan, Leah Coen, Alison Connolly, Ashley Bradshaw, Nell Spillane, Ellie Daveney and Ava Ward. Team managers: Micheál Spillane, Annette Connolly, Mark Prout and Martin Coen.
Athletes qualified for the County Athletics finals
The following athletes have been entered to compete in the County Athletics finals which will take place in Templemore on Sunday, June 21. Assembly for the parade at 10.30am, led by the Moycarkey Pipe Band. Opening ceremony takes place after the parade followed by events commencing on both tracks immediately afterwards.

The French 'Dionne' Quints' at Fethard Carnival back in the 1940s. Includes: Maureen O'Donnell (Yvonne), Mary Kenny (Cecile), Goldie Newport (Annette), Noddy Hennessy (nurse). The Dionne Quintuplets were born May 28, 1934, and are the first quintuplets known to have survived their infancy. The identical sisters, Yvonne, Annette, Cécile, Émilie and Marie were born in Canada, just outside Callander, Ontario, near the village of Corbeil. All five survived to adulthood.

Leading the charge with their diverse background in rock, country, funk & soul, Roger Mehta, vocals and percussion, Seamus Hayes, guitars, Val Whelan, drums, Oreste Perillo, bass, and David Corbett, harmonica meld a fusion of musical passion and their love of the blues to deliver a night of heart aching, foot stompin', classic blues songs.
Fethard & Killusty trip to Medjugorje 2015
Next year’s Fethard & Killusty parish trip to Medjugorje, operated by Joe Walsh Tours, will depart on August 12, 2015, and return on August 19, 2015. A special group rate of €669 per person sharing has been organised which includes flights, accommodation with breakfast and evening meal. Fethard & Killusty Community Lotto
The numbers drawn on June 3 were: 4, 6, 30 and 31. We had no jackpot winner and no ‘Match Three’ winner so the following drawn tickets received €50 each: Kaycie Aherne, Prospect, Fethard; Ger McCarthy, Kerry St. Fethard; and John Connolly, Clonmel.
The three following ‘Lucky Dip’ winners received €50 each: Breda Wilson, Rathkenny, Drangan; Johanna Corbett, Canon Hayes Park, Fethard; and P. Russell, Ballydonnell, Mullinahone.
Next week’s draw takes place on Wednesday, June 10. The Jackpot is €4,450 and the Jackpot seller’s prize is €445. All proceeds go towards community projects in Fethard, and we thank you for your on-going support.
GAA Sports Development Lotto
Last week’s numbers drawn on June 5, were 4, 8, 10 and 26. There was no jackpot winner and one match three winner who received €100: Austy Godfrey, Derryluskin.
Next week’s Jackpot is €11,600 and the draw will take place in Fethard GAA Park dressing rooms on Friday, June 12, at 7pm. Sellers Prize €270. All are welcome and thank you for your continued support. All funds raised are used to promote sport in the community.
Joey finishes 2nd at the Walls of Fethard 6k

Fethard AC enjoyed a great evening's run at the Walls of Fethard 6k on Thursday last, May 28. The weather was perfect with a crowd of 126 runners who enjoyed the scenic rural route. The race was won by Thurles Crokes man Liam Shanahan with Fethard AC's Joey Feery finishing a close second. The ladies race was won impressively by Siobhan O’Doherty, Borrisokane, who gave the men a run for their money.

We would like to extend our warmest thanks to all the local businesses that generously donated prizes and sponsorship for the race and indeed to all the volunteers on the night who ensured the smooth running of the event. We're looking forward to next year's meeting already.
