Fethard GAA Club News
On Saturday evening last in Ardfinnan our Junior B football team advanced to the South final when they defeated near neighbours Moyle Rovers by a scoreline of Fethard 1-13, Moyle Rovers 1-4. Both teams had their moments in the first half with ‘The Blues’ leading at the 30 minute mark. In the second half we took complete control of matters and ran out easy winners. To be fair to the opposition we were a bit on the strong side with a well balanced youth and mature selection who jelled well under the steward ship of P.J. Aherne, their captain. The elders on the side showed amazing cuteness not to mention the short bursts of speed that they produced on occasions. Paul Kenny in goal had a lapse of concentration in the first half but his judgement at a later stage saved a certain goal and helped in no way to spur on the boys.

When Darra O’Meara was introduced he upped the ante for the blues and this should see him start in the final against Cahir. P.J. Aherne played a captain’s part with his never-say-die attitude and brilliant passes. Miceál Spillane, Willie Morrissey, Martin Coen and Johnny Neville were inspirational in their deliveries in the forward line and showed that their spirit is still strong. At No 3, Michael Moroney was sound and took no nonsense, and likewise the corners Ian Kenrick, and Peter Gough, stood their ground. The half-back line of Frankie O’Donovan, Damien Byrne and Ronan Allen were reliable. Cathal Hurley and P.J. Aherne did well in the centre of the field and kept a good supply of ball to the forwards. The half-line of Eugene Walsh, Willie Morrissey and Brian Healy also had their moments. Subs used were: D. Tobin, A. Burke, D. O’Meara and J. Fitzgerald.

Belated best wishes to our treasurer Stephen Fitzgerald on winning a car in the Tipperary County Board draw. Also belated congrats to Michael Ryan, Tullamaine, for his management skills on guiding the Tipperary Intermediate hurlers to victory over Kilkenny in the all Ireland. Hopefully he will get the chance to guide the Tipperary seniors in the not to distance future. Well done Mike, from the Fethard club which you served loyally for many years.

Rugby Club back in action

Fethard U7 and U8

Fethard hosted Kilfeacle for their first match of the season and. The fine weather brought a wonderful turnout of players and their families. It was wonderful to see you all. Welcome to our Under 7s of Gavin Neville, Charlie Walsh, Codi Grogan, Millie Sheehan, Sean Fitzgerald and Bill Smyth. The six players are great to get involved and have shown enthusiasm with plenty of promise already when joining in with a fun game of tip rugby amongst themselves with our Under 8s. The U8’s panel consisted of Robbie Cleere, William Noonan, Oisin Ryan, Conor Treacy, Adam O'Connell, Mark Neville, Andrew Wall, Clodagh Foley, Pairic Heffernan, David McCormack, Padriag O'Dwyer, Michael James Phelan, Jack Quinlan, Tomas Ryan, Louis Ryan, Luke Ryan and Tom Smyth. A great panel of 17 who showed plenty of passing, good turning in or before the tackle, support for each other and tackling. We look forward to continued enjoyable Rugby for the season ahead.

Fethard U9
On Sunday last we were host to Kilfeacle at the minis level. Our U9s had a fine win against a spirited Kilfeacle team with Fethard lads Conor Neville, James McCormack and Charlie Cummins tackling everything that moved. The Ruttle boys, Ben and Stuart, and Conor Walsh had great games. Our thanks to Kilfeacle for a great sporting game.

Fethard U10
What a great start to the season for this team, it was a brisk morning for a rugby match this did not deter this bunch of young players. There was really great passages of play with some good line breaks being made, with some powerful tackles being made, in having said that there is still room for improvement with some of the lads a small bit rusty, looking forward to seeing everybody at training on Friday new players always welcome.

Fethard U13
We had our first practice match of the season against Clanwilliam and the boys had a very nervous start as, for most of them, it was their first 15 a side game and Clanwilliam ran in two early tries, one of which they converted. However, once we got our bearings, we contested much better and David McCormack broke from the back of the ruck and grounded for our first try. The lads, captained by Jack O'Rourke, put in some very hard tackles and a lot of hard work which resulted in Patrick Scully scoring our second try followed by James Phillips scoring another later in the game, converted by Daragh Lynch. We started to tire towards the end and Clanwilliam’s fitness helped them to two more tries. The game ended 22-17 to Clanwilliam but the signs are good for us to compete very highly at U13s this year. Fethard RFC can be proud of the effort put in by all players. Well done lads.

Fethard U15
These lads clocked up their second win of the season accounting for Thurles last weekend and a fine Clanwilliam team this Sunday. The team on Sunday was lead by Griffith Ivors, who was assisted by John Clancy, Gearóid Fahey, Michael Gaynor and the up and coming Tim Daly. Aaron Smullen, Jack Kealy, Andrew O'Connell and the Ivors cousins, Richie and Oran, had great games. Luke Grant, Ross McCormack and Mark Heffernan had great performances also. Training continues on Fridays at 8pm and all new and old players very welcome.

Many thanks to all the parents who brought biscuits and cakes for after-match refreshments. All is much appreciated. Furthermore, a huge big ‘thank you’ to all the ladies and gents who managed the serving in the clubhouse. Not forgetting the great coaches for their time. See everyone at training on Friday evening. New members and new coaches are always welcome to our Club. Please come along to training on Friday night at 6.45pm.

Fethard J2s
Fethard senior team started off this season as the finished up last season with two great wins in the Gleeson League! Last week we had a great win against Kilfeacle scoring three great tries in a game we won 21 points to 16. Nick Hoynes, Willie Power and Philip Ivors scoring these great tries and Declan Doyle scoring three great penalties!

This Sunday we lined out against Clonmel and despite being short many regulars, Fethard dug in and never relented to earn the well deserved win by 6 points to 3. The much younger and probably less experienced Fethard team played with exceptional heart, with Shane Kavanagh and Philips Ivors sawing down everything in the centre, tries were going to be hard to come by! Cliff O’Halloran, Kevin Hayes, Dave Kelly and our new brothers, Chris and Rob Bannister, were to the fore in the forwards. Matthew Ryan and Conor Kavanagh were others that shined. Next week we face Clanwilliam in the league. Training continues Tuesdays and Fridays at 8pm. New players always welcome.
