Mary Hanrahan joined the staff of Nano Nagle N.S. Fethard in 1981, having previously taught for two years in Corduff, Blanchardstown, Dublin. From all accounts Mary really enjoyed her metropolitan experiences, but circumstances, affairs of the heart even, drew her to Fethard where she since resides with her husband, Tony and her family. Dublin's loss was Fethard's gain as Mary has proved to be a valued staff member for over 30 years.

During her career Mary has taught a wide variety of age groups, but is particularly associated with First Communion classes. Her dedication to the preparation of the children for this sacrament and her efforts to make it a very special occasion for all concerned has been recognised and commended over the years.

Mary's teaching experiences range from teaching infants during the years when class sizes of 40 children didn't raise an eyebrow, to an 11-year period as Learning Support Teacher. She excelled in this area, managing assessments, setting up child-specific programmes, liaising with parents, teachers, therapists and psychologists. One could say she was in her element! She also acted as consultant in the Learning Support area to Cloneen N.S. This assistance was greatly appreciated by the Principal and staff.

Mary returned to the classroom in 2010 when Nano Nagle N.S. and St. Patricks N.S. amalgamated to become Holy Trinity N.S. Once again her holistic approach to the childrens development came to the fore as did her caring, understanding demeanour.

Those who know Mary will be well aware of her considerable P.R. skills. Her gift of having words at will for every occasion, linked with her facility in presentation were very valuable staff assets. She also served on the Board of Management of Nano Nagle N.S. for many years. Her secretarial skills vis-à-vis minute taking and report writing were second to none.

Mary's love of history has also been a great boon to the school. Her forte in this area has to be her amazing bank of knowledge and her ability to present it to audiences young and old. She has given guided tours of Fethard to hosts of school children over the years and has promised to return to help us out in future.

Mary was always welcoming and helpful to visitors and new-comers; generous and supportive to colleagues; resourceful and respectful to her students. Her sense of fun and lively disposition will be missed by the school community.

Mary officially retired from Holy Trinity N.S. on February 29, of this year. We wish her a long, healthy and happy retirement.

A big thank you to all the parents, teachers, pupils, friends and the Fethard Community who diligently voted each day online for the two entries. Beir Bua!

Last Sunday Killusty secured promotion to the 2nd Division League with a hard earned win over Ballypatrick (see sports section for details). Well done to all the lads, Shay and Liam your jobs are safe for next season.

Our heartiest congratulations go to Frank Britton, Cloneen, who was the winner of our €10,000 lotto jackpot, well done Frank. Thanks to all of you who support our weekly lotto, and special thanks to Fethard Oil, the home heating specialists, who are our ticket sponsors this year.
We must also thank everyone who contributed to our recent church gate collection. In these difficult times your support is greatly appreciated.

During the month of May the club are organising a series of scrap metal collection days. Every Saturday between 10am and 4 pm you can leave your unwanted scrap metal (no electrical goods) in Killusty sports field. Items can also be collected by calling or text to either 087 2355964 or 086 1061452. So if you have any old cars, bikes, lawnmowers etc to get rid of, now is your chance. First collection day is May 5.

Finally, we take this opportunity to offer our condolences to the Matthews family, Kerry Street, on the recent death of Georgie, who was a selector with the club in the 1980s. Georgie had a great passion for the game and instilled in us an attitude of playing to the final whistle, he would certainly have been proud of our lads on Sunday last when they won in the dying seconds. Georgie will be fondly remembered in Killusty, may he rest in peace.

Fethard Ladies Football Club
Well done to the Under 12 girls who won their A/B championship match against Moyle Rovers on Saturday, April 14, on a scoreline of 5-1 to 3-0. These girls are playing some great football, and we hope they continue to do well in the championship.

The Under 14 girls were home to Ballyporeen on Sunday evening, August 15, and won by a comfortable margin. It was a great team effort from all the girls who played. The Junior Ladies travelled to Thurles on Sunday, April 15, for a match against Sarsfields in the Junior B League. Fethard took advantage of playing with the wind in the first half, reaching the interval ahead by three points (1-2 to 1-5). However, they could have been even further ahead, perhaps by at least another two goals.

In the second half Fethard worked hard to win the ball, but then struggled to keep it. At the final whistle Thurles Sarsfield had done enough to win the game by 2-7 to 1-6. Certainly a game that Fethard could have won. One very positive aspect of the Junior Ladies match was the fact that seven of the starting 15 played at Minor level for Fethard last year. It is great to see these players coming through to complement the experience already in the Junior Ladies team.

The Gaelic 4 Mothers are back! Training begins on Wednesday evening at 8pm in the GAA Field. The emphasis in G4M is firmly on participation and fun rather than competition. No previous playing experience is required. Please come along on Wednesday. See you there.

On the fundraising side of things, last week we launched our 'Cash for Clobber' fundraising initiative to raise funds using any unwanted clothing that we collect. If you are doing your spring cleaning this month, keep us in mind for any clothing that you no longer need - we will be collecting outside the GAA Field in Fethard on Saturday April 28, between 11am and 1pm.

Finally, the Last Man Standing competition came to a close with two people agreeing to share the pot. Keep an eye on all the Club's activities via our Fethard Ladies Football Facebook page.

The beautiful Anner Park in Cloneen was the venue for our encounter in the South Tipperary senior football championship with near neighbours Mullinahone. Playing with whatever wind was on offer in the first half, the Blues opened with a point from a free from Brian Coen, quickly followed by a Michael Dillon point from play and this put the boys in front till the final whistle.

Goalie Paul Fitzgerald had two fine saves early in the half, denying the opposition goal chances. Mikey Ahearne at No. 3 was solid throughout with his two corner men, Shane Aylward and Alan O'Connor, both delivering a fine performance.

The half back line of Gavin Fitzgerald, Dee Bourke and Brian Delahunty were solid and supplied well to Cian Maher and Jamie McCormack in the centre field, who worked the ball into the forwards to create many fine scoring chances. The younger lads in the forward line especially Ciaran O'Meara and Dylan Fitzgerald gave notice of their intension to hold on to their positions with superb displays. Michael Dillon at No. 11 caught some amazing high balls as he can when he turns on the power.

The veterans of the side, in the inside line Karl Maher, Brian Coen at full forward and Kenneth O'Donnell, showed a fine turn of pace and took their scores well.

The final score was, Fethard 1-14, Mullinahone 0-10. Team as follows: P. Fitzgerald, S. Aylward, M. Ahearne, A. O'Conner, G. Fitzgerald, D. Bourke, B. Delahunty, C. Maher, J. McCormack, C.
