The ‘Harrington Walkway’ was officially opened and blessed on Wednesday, September 14. Mr Joe Keane, chairman Fethard Tidy Towns, addressed all present and welcomed the guests from South Tipperary County Council. Canon Tom Breen P.P. blessed the walkway after which the ribbon was cut by Mrs Mary Harrington, who had very generously given the section of land for community use. We are indebted to Mary for her very kind donation as it is going to make such a difference to walkers on that stretch of road.

Many thanks to Area Engineer Eoin Powell, Cllr Jimmy O’Brien, Cllr John Fahey for attending and to Joe Kenny for taking photographs of the occasion. We had a good turn out for the event and all were invited back to Fethard ‘Pop Up Café’ for refreshments afterwards. The Tidy Towns committee would also like to their express their gratitude to the ‘Brodeen Stitchers’ who very generously donated €300 which will be used for flowers and planting in the coming year. This group has been very generous to us in the past and earlier in the year made a donation towards the stone flowerpots that enhance the Square.

With the football and hurling drawing to a close for 2011, the action is just getting underway for many on the rugby fields around the country. Fethard & District Rugby Club has just started its new season at the Community Sportsfield, with training on Friday nights from 6:45pm for ages 6 through 13 and from 8pm for older players. New members - both boys and girls - are always welcome.

Sunday is normally match day, and this week there were practice matches for the Under 13 and Under 15 panels. Inspired by the Irish team's thrilling display against Australia at the World Cup, both the 13s and the 15s showed little sign of rustiness at this early stage of the new season. The club is always delighted to have spectators at matches - entrance is free. Watch out for home games against Waterpark on October 2 for the Under 13s; against Clanwilliam on October 9 for the Under 15s; and against both Clonmel and Galbally on October 30 for the minis.

The long wait is finally over for Tipperary football players and supporters as this year’s superb minor football team raised the bar to beat the cream of the land and go on to win Tipperary’s first All-Ireland minor football title since 1934 with a sensational 3-09 to 1-14 comeback win over Dublin at Croke Park on Sunday last.

Former Fethard senior footballer, Michael O’Riordan, Barrack Street, had two sons, Alan and Colin, on the team. The other Fethard connection was Gregory Henry, son of Róisín Earls and Richard Henry, Primus Advertising, Fethard. Gregory was a former member of Fethard Athletic Club and Fethard Rugby Club.

The last time Tipperary minors played in the All-Ireland final was in 1984 against the same opposition, Dublin. On that occasion Tipperary lost and Tommy Sheehan, a player on that team, summed it up when he said, “I have waited 27 years to bury that ghost and today was brilliant, the greatest sporting occasions I have ever seen, Tipperary All-Ireland Minor Football Champions 2011, what a day!”

Fethard Macra News
As per usual the autumn brings many events in the Macra calendar.
On Friday, September 9, the Fethard impromptu debating team took to the floor in Clonoulty hall against Dundrum. The team consisted of Laurann O'Reilly, Pat Murphy and Michael Moclair, who had to debate the motion as to whether 'The Era of chivalry is dead and gone'. Despite a good performance from our lads, Dundrum won on the night and go through to the next round. Well done to our team for their efforts.

Last weekend saw many members of South Tipperary Macra hit the Atlantic waves off the west coast of Lahinch in Clare. Some of our own Fethard members went along too and had a great afternoon's craic getting to grips with their surfing lessons. In Lisdoonvarna that night everybody sampled the local nightspots as part of the annual month long (and world famous) match making festival and we have a few as yet unconfirmed reports that there were indeed a few matches made that night!

National club officer training takes place in the Johnstown House Hotel in Enfield, county Meath on this Saturday and Sunday, September 23 and 24. Several members from here will attend. In the past our officers have found this training invaluable for fulfilling their roles at club level.
South Tipperary Macra would like to thank the Tierney family of Bannixtown, Fethard for the use of their farm where the 2011 round of the beef and sheep stock judging was held recently.

It was a successful night for our club as we have two members that won on the night and who go forward to the national finals at the Macra rally in October which will be held in Cork. Stephen Tierney won the under 23 beef judging and Michael Moclair won the over 23 sheep judging.

Now that autumn is here again and the nights are drawing in, volleyball has begun again on a weekly basis. All South Tipp members are invited to attend. Games take place every Thursday night at 9pm in Clerihan hall. See you there!

The next meeting of Fethard Macra takes place on the October 10, in Butlers Bar, Fethard. For more information or to become a member, phone our chairperson, Liam Cleary on 086 3998711

Patrician Presentation Jottings

Junior Cert Results
Congratulations to all our Junior Certs on their wonderful exam results. Despite national statistics, Patrician/Presentation had a 100% success in all subjects at all levels. There were many outstanding results with Karen Hayes topping the 2011 class with 9 As and 2 Bs. Karen is daughter of Mr and Mrs Michael Hayes, Coolmore, Fethard. The school is proud of all its students and particularly those who reached their potential in this exam. Well done to all the pupils and their teachers.

Homework Club
The Homework Club, which is run by Ms Sinead Burke and open to First and Second Year pupils, is up and running again. Pupils attending have a light snack before settling down to study for 1 hour in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere.

Supervised Study
Supervised Study for all pupils resumed on Monday, September 12. The service, which runs from Monday to Thursday from 4pm to 6pm, is supervised by teachers and allows the pupils to study in an exam-like atmosphere. We encourage exam pupils in particular to avail of this service.

International Students
There is again this year a strong international presence in the school community. Failte to 6th Year pupils Luisa Muller from the Koblenz area of Germany and Joao Malheiros Oliviera from Brazil. We wish them well during their stay in the Fethard area.

Transition Year
The TY Programme for this year is already in operation. The ‘School Shop’ is organised and run by the pupils as part of their Mini-Company under the guidance of Mrs Deirdre Mulhall. It is aptly named Snackosity.

The pupils have already embarked on their community project in the local Day Care Centre under the supervision of Mrs Geraldine McCarthy who very kindly gave a talk on the work of the centre to the pupils on September 6. The pupils work on a rota basis with the Meals on Wheels scheme on Mondays and Fridays each week. The TYs will also travel with senior classes to the Irish Times Higher Options in the RDS on Friday, September 16.

Preparations are also under way for the Café de Paris in the school in late September when the TY pupils will organise and run a French-style café for all French classes.

Hospice Coffee Morning
Patrician/Presentation Staff took part in the fundraising for the Irish Hospice Association on Thursday, September 14. This tradition was started by Ms Mary O’Sullivan and the school is happy to continue its involvement with the event.

School Mass and Awards Ceremony
Preparations are under way for our Annual School Mass to ask God’s blessing on the school year for all our school community. The Mass on October 21 will be followed by the 2010-2011 Awards Ceremony which recognises the academic excellence, the effort and the many achievements of our pupils during the past school year

Farewell
It was with sadness that we said goodbye to Ms Aileen O’Shea, Career Guidance Teacher in June. Ms O’Shea spent the 2010-2011 school year with us but during that time she contributed greatly to our school both in the Career Guidance area and to the very successful Glee Club. She is wished well in her future career.

We were also shocked to learn of the departure of Ms Michelle Edwards, SNA, in June due to a reduction in the number of SNA posts allocated to the school. Michelle was a valued member of the staff and contributed a great deal to our school. We wish her well as she embarks on a course of studies in UCC.
