 The death has occurred on 22nd November of Denis (Dinny) Ryan of St Johnstown, Fethard, Tipperary.
Reposing at McCarthy's Funeral Home on Monday evening from 5.30pm with removal to St Joseph the Worker Church, Moyglass at 7.30pm.
Funeral Mass on Tuesday morning, at 11.30am. Burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery.

A celebration to honour the 75th anniversary of Moyglass senior hurlers victory in the south championship of 1934 was held at the Village Inn in Moyglass on Saturday 14th November. Former county hurler and selector, Mr Jack Bergin, was on hand to present framed photographs of the team and supporters to family members. Clips from the Nationalist of 1934 were also on view with match previews and reports.
The large crowd in attendance paid tribute to the day when these men brought honour to the village. 1934 was a special year as it was the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the GAA in Hayes Hotel in Thurles.

The older generation such as Martin Power, Michael O’Neill, Jim Costigan, Hannie Leahy, Willy Crean, Joe Ahearne, and Mai Kennedy helped to name the team and supporters. Joe Ahearne actually attended the match and has vivid memories of the action. Joe was accompanied to Moyglass by Sean Moloney and Seamus Hackett. Michael O’Neill, Michael and Nancy Fanning were also present as was Paddy Tynan of Cattaganstown who won a minor hurling All Ireland in 1959 when Tipperary defeated Kilkenny by 2-8 to 2-7.

The photographs and clips created much discussion and reminiscing on the night and lead to many questions being asked by the younger generation. Mr Denis Walsh (snr) of Tubberadora fame was the trainer of the Moyglass team.
Senior hurling results of 1934 were: Moyglass 7-4 to Boherlahan 3-2 (played at Glengoole); Killenaule 5-2 to Swans 4-3 (played in Clonmel). Semifinal: Moyglass 6-4 to Davins 3-2. Final: Moyglass 4-1 to Killenaule 2-3.
Fethard and Killusty Community Games
Annual General Meeting took place in the Tirry Community Centre on Thursday last 12th November. This was a good meeting where the current programme of events on offer were discussed at length and it was decided to enter teams from the area in as many activities as we could comfortably cater for.
It gave us great pleasure to welcome Alice Butler, Coolanure on to the committee. Alice is a fitting member as her dad, the late Pat Ryan, was one of our greatest supporters. Pat looked after several events and put many young people on the stepping stone to greater achievements. Alice's father-in-law, Tom Butler, was a founder member of the games in both the area and the county. Alice took care of a girls under-16 volleyball team in Mosney in 1986 when her brother Paddy competed in the high jump. Alice also represented Ireland in the world walking championships in Rome. No shortage of experience there we are delighted to have her on board along with Willie Quigley, Redcity who is another new committee member with great prospects.
All the other staunch members who put in so much work over the years were prepared to soldier on. It was decided that more effort must be put in to creating awareness of the games at local level and plans are underway to hold an U-14 Quiz early in the new year to select teams who will represent the area at the county finals.
We agreed to enter the following teams: U-10 Mixed Football, U-11 Hurling, U-12 Girls Football, U-13 Boys Indoor Soccer, Girls and Boys U-16 Volleyball.
We will also enter individuals in Art, Athletics, Gymnastics, and Swimming so this is a good start. We look forward to support of parents at our events. Special word of thanks to everybody who helped us in any way in the past.

Special Mass on Sunday
Fr. John Meagher OSA who will celebrate 70 years of priesthood at 11.30am Mass on Sunday next.
Next Sunday morning at 11.30am, the Augustinian Abbey community will con-celebrate a special mass to mark Fr. John Meagher’s 70 years service to the priesthood. All are invited to come along and join in the celebrations of Fr. John’s wonderful life dedicated to God and community. Refreshments will be served afterwards in the Abymill Theatre.
Fethard Macra news
Club members are continuing to train in Clonmel on Wednesday nights for the 4K Fun Run. This is proving to be a very achievable challenge for our members. It’s helping our fitness levels as well as being a very sociable activity.
Rathkeevin Macra are holding a 60th anniversary dance in the Clonmel Park on Saturday, 27th November. The guest speaker on the night will be Mr Brian Crowley MEP. Tickets are available from any Rathkeevin club member.
The New Year’s Eve Ball was officially launched in Kilcoran on Friday, 6th November. The theme of the ball is’ Black and White’. Tickets are a recession busting €40 and are available to the public in general from club members. A mulled wine reception and raffle prizes including gym membership and a weekend away are some of the main attractions of the night. Clonmel band the ‘Pearly Whites’ will be providing entertainment on the night.

St. Vincent De Paul news
Application Forms for anybody requiring our help for Christmas are available at the back of the two churches in Fethard. Please return to any member of the Conference before 30th November.

Our Annual Church Gate Collection this year is on Saturday 5th December and Sunday 6th December. We know that in an economic recession money is much tighter than before. However, we do know that this Parish has always been generous to the St. Vincent De Paul. We only ask to give what you can manage and we are very grateful for this.
Graduation

Ghosthunters from Guam
A group of tourists arrived into McCarthy’s with an unusual request. They ordered food and drinks and then looked for the undertaker. They wanted to look at his hearse. It transpired that three of the females in the group were funeral directors from the island of Guam. For anybody who is reaching for an atlas, the island of Guam is south east of Japan. It was a former Spanish colony which was made over to America at the end of the 19th Century. It is, according to the tourists, 99.99 per cent Catholic.
The hearse was pulled out for them. “Oh my God”, one exclaimed, “It’s got a window in the back!” Their hearses are fully enclosed. They then proceeded to photograph the hearse from every angle, after which they outlined the typical funeral in Guam. It lasts 18 days! The family and friends of the deceased have nine days of Rosaries before the burial, followed by another nine days for the family alone. This party of undertakers have four hearses in four different colours, brown, silver, black and blue. The blue one is the most popular.
They then explained that they were heading to Leap Castle near Birr, as they were on a ghost tour of Ireland. Ghosts, it appears, loom large in the culture of Guam. Their predominant ghosts are called Taotaomonas and if they appear to people, can only be banished by the local witch doctor.
Before leaving, one of the party had a picture taken with the undertaker before declaring that the chance to photograph the hearse was the highlight of their holiday so far!

Fethard GAA Club News
Mass for all deceased members will take place on Friday 27th November in Holy Trinity Church Fethard at 7pm. All are welcome.
Our Lotto Jackpot of €3,800 was not won. The numbers drawn were 7, 8, 10 and 32. Fethard Historical Society
For the November lecture, members of Fethard Historical Society will go to the Heritage Centre in Killenaule next Wednesday for a lecture on the ‘Medieval sculpture in Kilcooley Abbey and the work of Rory O'Tunney’.
Kilcooley has some magnificent carvings, especially by members of the O'Tunney family, and this work will be covered in detail by Willie Quinlan (art historian), Maura Barrett (librarian, Killenaule) and Liam Noonan (caretaker and guide at Kilcooley Abbey).
The Fethard Historical Society urge members and those interested in art and local history to take this opportunity of finding out more about Kilcooley Abbey, which is another ‘gem’ to be found in the locality.

Members from Mullinahone Youth Club will visit Fethard Youth Centre this Friday night. Members are asked to come along early. The Youth Centre opens Friday and Saturday nights from 8pm to 10pm.

Hunting News
Pat O’Brien hunted hounds on Monday when the Tipperary Foxhounds met at Mullinahone. From Croke’s they hunted a good left-handed circle up to the Lismolin – Callan road and back to the large plantation at the Mullinahone – Ballingarry road. Finding again nearby they ran back towards the village turning left-handed they crossed the road to Finane wood. At Dualla, on Wednesday, some excellent hound work ensued on Connolly’s Hill and Silverfort. Not the best of country for long runs, hounds however finding at O’Hallorans hunted exceptionally well to Connolly’s out on Kill Hills and back to the hill where they were stopped. More of the same good hound work followed in the big covert at Lalor’s.
The day concluded with a nice hunt from Silverfort House. Hounds crossed the road at Folkestone, ran to the top of Knockforla and looked like running to Buffana when their fox turned right-handed and they hunted him back by Beechmount and to ground in a shore at the Silverfort Cross – Arbour Hill road. They met at the Rock of Cashel on Thursday for Hoare Abbey. Following a pre-Christmas stirrup cup and mince pies, from Mr Ray Morrissey’s Supervalu in Cashel, hounds quickly had a fox to ground on the old Cashel Racecourse. Crossing the Dundrum road they found in Mrs Taylor’s. From here they ran to the Suir at Connors’. The fox crossed the road here, ran through Mr Roger Kennedy’s to Billy Tobin’s where he got to ground. They finished the day with a run from Brittas wood back almost to Cashel where they again crossed the road and ran by the Old Racecourse Stand House towards Clune where they lost him. From Cloneen on Saturday they hunted from Rathkenny over Bennettshill towards Knockelly covert.
Turning short of here they ran back through Saucestown to the plantation at Everardsgrange where they lost him. From Byrnes Rock they had a good run to Byrnskill to Bannixtown and up to the Fethard – Cloneen road. Left-handed from here they hunted back through Menlo and Byrnes where the fox ran through the farmyard. Hunting slowly through Mr Joe Murphy’s gallops they carried the line back to Byrnskill where they lost him. Sam hunted hounds on Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday. Huntsman, Derry Donegan is making a great recovery from his injuries. He hopes to resume hunting hounds, everything going well, this weekend.
With the White Heathers
Poor scenting conditions were the order of the day for The White Heather Harriers at Loughcopple on Sunday. A fox found across the Kilsheelan road from move-off ran to Kyleavalla Lane, down to the Anner and back to Loughcopple where they lost him. Finding again at College they hunted to the railway at Sladagh where they lost him. Form further down the line at Rathcanty they hunted slowly across the Annesfort Road through Tony Slattery’s to Grangebeg and marked to ground in the quarry at Barry Walsh’s. From Annesfort House they finished the day running back through Milltown, over the Annesfort Road to the Railway line at Carrigeen Shamróg where they lost him. The Ballyluskey White Heather Harriers meet Sunday next, 22nd November at Coolbawn Cross and on 29th November at the Rectory House, Fethard.

Fethard Rugby Football Club News
Fethard J3s travelled to Kilfeacle on Saturday evening to play in the Gleeson League. The Fethard team gave a great account of themselves, unluckily defeated by 8 points to 6. Kilfeacle were first to score with a penalty but some great play by Tom Anglim, Richie Horan and Emmet Sheridan saw Fethard awarded a penalty, converted by Tommy Gahan. Some great tackling by Alan O'Conner, Jimmy O'Brien and Eoin Doyle kept the game at three all before Kilfeacle crossed the line for a fine try.
The second half saw Fethard camped in the Kilfeacle 22 for about twenty minutes and crossed the line twice but failed to get the touch down and eventually came away with 3 points from a Tommy Gahan penalty. Kilfeacle rucked down into the Fethard 22 but Paul Scully emerged from the ruck with the ball and a great tackle by the Kilfeacle full-back saved a sure try but Fethard recycled and Shane Kenny was unlucky not to score. This Fethard team is improving weekly. PJ Morris, Colm Blackmore, Joe Kelly, Hugh O'Conner and Peter Collier had fine games also. Our thanks to Kilfeacle for their hospitality on the night.
Waterpark conceded the league points in under-15s so we travelled to Thurles to play a friendly. This proved to be a hotly contested game against a very strong Thurles side. We were short some of our regulars. Kyle Walsh continued his great vein of form and scored our first try, followed closely by our ever improving hooker Cathal O'Donnell crossing for his first try of the season. Jos Murray converted Cathal's try and followed with a try of his own. Our captain Ger Gorey who dominated the line-out throughout also got in on the scoring. Great forward play and keeping the ball live through 12 or 13 phases releasing Ger to dive over for a fine try.
The panel were delighted to welcome back three young Ballingarry men, Shane Cleere, Paul Butler and William Ryan who all had great games. David Hayes gave a tackling display of great quality. Ciaran White, Denis Fogarty and Niall Prendergast put in great gutsy performances for their size and age. Luke Keating and Joey Purtill were very effective props while Adam Fitzgerald hooked well in the second half. William Morgan was excellent at out-half while Cian O'Connell and Tom Anglim were also very effective in this 22 points to 15 victory over Thurles. We take on Carrick-on-Suir next Sunday.
Jim Rooney, a musical life
Jim Rooney, Mick Daly and Kevin Gill who play a gig in McCarthy’s on Saturday 21st November in Fethard.
Jim Rooney has been involved in music for over 50 years since he first broadcast on Boston radio station “Hayloft Jamboree” in 1954. In 1960 he joined up with Bill Keith to form a musical partnership which has lasted to this day. Jim was at the centre of the folk revival of the 1960s, managing the famous Club 47 in Cambridge, home to musicians like Joan Baez and Tom Rush. He was also a Director of the Newport Folk Festival which introduced rising young artists like Kris Kristofferson, Van Morrison, Joni Mithcell, Arlo Guthrie and James Taylor.
Jim subsequently lived in Woodstock, NY, during which time he managed Albert Grossman’s Bearsville Sound Studio (Grossman was Bob Dylan’s manager for eight years). Artists that recorded there include the Band, Van Morrison, Taj Mahal and Bonnie Raitt. Jim was also a member of the Woodstock Mountain Revue, which toured the USA, Europe and Japan.
In 1976, Jim moved to Nashville where he became associated with Cowboy Jack Clements, which led Jim into engineering and producing records. He is best known for his Grammy nominated records with John Prine, Iris DeMent, Peter Rowan, Tom Paxton and a Grammy winning album ‘Other Voices, Other Rooms’ with Nanci Griffith.
In 1986, Jim became a founding partner in the Forerunner Music Group, publishing music for a number of artists. They had chart success with artists like Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, Hal Ketchum and Vince Gill. Jim produced Mick Hanly’s ‘Past the Point of Rescue’, for Hal Ketchum , which became a huge hit in the USA.
Jim now spends half his time living in Galway and the rest in Nashville and Vermont with his wife Carol Langstaff. He continues to work with many artists in Ireland and America. He has recorded a number of solo and group albums and is also the author of two books.
Jim recently hosted the 50th Anniversary Celebration of the Newport Folk Festival, introducing old hands like Pete Seegar, as well as the new young breed like Josh Ritter and Gemma Welsh.
Jim Rooney will play in McCarthy’s in Fethard on Saturday 21st November. He will be accompanied by Mick Daly (the Lee Valley String Band, Four Men and a Dog) and Kevin Gill on dobro (Lee Valley String Band). The venue is an intimate one, so it is expected to sell out fast. Tickets are €20 from McCarthy’s. Contact 086 8119625.
