After the disappointment of the All Ireland hurling final for Tipperary supporters, we now look forward to the football final and the involvement of the Tipperary Minor team in football's biggest day. We wish the team the very best of luck and hope they bring the first All Ireland minor title to Tipperary since 1934. A special word of support for our own Eoin Fitzgerald and also to the O'Riordan brothers from JK Brackens whose father Michael is a former county final winning captain for Fethard.

Cardiac Screening
Following the most up to date international best practice guidelines, the GAA's medical scientific and welfare committee now advise players over the age of 14 years to undergo cardiac screening. It also advises that this process be repeated before the age of 25 years. Screening consists of filling out a GAA cardiac screening questionnaire, a physical examination and ECG. The cost of this screening should be approximately €70.

What a fantastic Cúl Camp we had this year. So many to thank, and yet a simple 'thank you' does not begin to describe our gratitude to those who took time out to help and sponsor prizes for our Cúl Camp Raffle.
This year we produced a club Cúl Camp policy which was adhered to throughout. We had five assistants, Cathal Hurley, Frankie O'Donovan, who also helped last year, David Hayes, Brian Healy and Dion Butler who joined us this year. These lads assisted the coaches all week, as well as organising groups before training. They worked very hard and were a credit to the club. Also helping with the camp co-ordinating were Mary Godfrey, Sheila O'Donovan, Emma Fleming, Annette O'Donovan, Ann Fleming and Lisa Barlaz. Sheila took care of catering, Annette oversaw the raffle and photographs. All helping on the first day with registration and handing out kits as well as break time supervision. We also had P.J. Aherne (juvenile chairman), Patsy Lawrence (club chairman), Andy O'Donovan (children's officer), and Michael Hayes on hand to help with supervision.

Those who sponsored prizes for the raffle were, John Hanrahan, Reflections by Abigail, Liz Sheehan, Pat Sheehan, The Lantern, XL Stop n Shop, Gerry Aherne, Allens Meats, John O'Donovan, Mary Fogarty, Danny Morgan, Frank O'Donovan, Carroll Framing, Butlers Bar, McCarthy Hotel, O'Sullivan's Pharmacy, Meagher - Daybreak, Liz McCormack, Johnny Sheehan, Austin Godfrey and Wards Garage.
Our brilliant coaches this year were: Noel Russell (Carrick Swans) and Johnny Cummins (Ardfinnan) overseeing, James Logue and Laura Maher from Ballingarry, Mossy Bracken and Mauve Hackett from Moycarkey, Ian Maher, Tommy Dorney and Stephen Maher from Thurles Sarsfields.

We had visitors this week from County players both past and present in both hurling and gaelic football, they were our own Paul Fitzgerald, Shane Walsh, Michael Ryan from Fethard, Padraic Maher (2011 Cúl Camp ambassador) and the one and only Eoin Kelly (Tipperary senior hurling captain).

Also visiting this week was John Landers, from Munster Coaching & Games, who was very impressed with Fethard camp and all the precautions taken for the children who attended. It seemed like very hard work but with everyone on board this week went so smoothly and we hope to do the same next year.

Sports Lotto
On September 6, the numbers drawn were 7, 19, 26 and 27. We had no jackpot winner and no match three. Five drawn tickets received €30 each: Cara McGarry, Burke Street; Bridget Ryan, Killusty; Anne-Marie Jones, Moyglass; Bernie Byrne, Claremore; and Austie Godfrey, Derryluskin. The €50 Lucky dip winner was: Clare Moloney, Red City. Next weeks draw takes place in Butler's Bar, Fethard, on Tuesday, September 13.

Danaher Cup
Well done to our U8 Footballers who won back the Danaher Cup on Sunday, September 11, in Fethard's Danaher Cup Blitz. We thank all those clubs who joined us to compete for this coveted trophy including Clerihan, St. Patricks, Ardfinnan, The Nire and last year's winners Clonmel Commercials.

The cup is named after one of Tipperary's most stylish players of the period, Gus Danaher, who was a member of the Tipperary minor football team beaten by Dublin in the 1955 All Ireland minor football final. He played on the Tipperary junior football team the following year and was a regular member of Tipperary senior football teams of the following decade. Gus was honoured twice by the Munster football selectors in the sixties and he was also an accomplished hurler and figured prominently on Coolmoyne and group selection junior and senior teams of the period. He was a leading playing member of the Fethard county senior football championship team of 1957.

The Danaher Cup was presented to the winners of parish under-14 league for many years up to October 2002. The competition was revived in 2009 when the club held a juvenile blitz in aid of the Community Field inviting neighbouring clubs to compete at Under 8 level football. It has now become an annual blitz organised by the Fethard Club between neighbouring parishes.

Walkway officially opens on Wednesday

Fethard Historical Society lecture
On Friday, September 16, at 8.30pm in the Abymill Theatre, Dr Bernadette Cunningham from the Royal Irish Academy will give a talk on Geoffrey Keating entitled, 'The man and the Myth'. Priest, poet and historian Geoffrey Keating was born in Co Tipperary, though it is disputed whether he was born in the townsland of Burgess or at Moorstown Castle. He worked for most of his life in this area and is believed to be buried in the ruined churchyard at Tubbrid which is situated between Cahir and Clogheen.

He wrote two famous works, 'Tri bior-ghaoithe an bhais' and 'Foras feasa ar Éirinn' and also a number of poems two of which are still widely known. Foras feasa ar Éirinn became famous in the seventeen century as it gave to the people of Ireland a narrative of their own history in their own language while combining a shared heritage between the Gaeil and the Sean Ghaill (Old English) which was in sharp contrast with the new official histories then being written. His book offered a sense of Irishness to the people of the time and was widely read for the following two hundred years. It was passed around in manuscript form and one of these manuscripts was written by Seaghan O Duibhir of Burke Street, Fethard (formally Sraid An Riasga) in 1837.

At the time of the Irish language revival movement in the late 19th century, his use and style of the Irish language was also acclaimed and admired as the standard to reach. Keating also was a populariser of the special relationship between Irishness and Catholicism which these days is open to review. In historical terms Keating retains the distinction of being the most influential man of this county.

On Sunday last, September 11, Clonacody Country House held their first annual Harvest Fete and were blessed with good weather to augment a wonderful family afternoon. Banna Chluain Meala came along to entertain the crowd on the lawn as did pupils of Paul Tobin's Taekwon-Do classes, who put on a terrific display of self-defence and martial arts.

The atmosphere was very relaxed and visiting families really enjoyed just wandering around visiting the various craft stalls, food displays and popular pet stand. Younger children enjoyed the bouncing castle and pony and trap rides around the estate.

A large group enjoyed local chef, Barbara Russell's workshop on home cooking while others were fascinated by some of the intricate jewellery on display.
