On Tuesday, January 18, there will be a special screening of 'The Pipe' in the cinema room at Fethard Youth Centre (limited to 40 seats). The film deals with the Corrib Gas Pipeline and was featured on RTE's 'Today Tonight' programme.

The film, "compelling and deeply moving" (Time Out), is a story of a community tragically divided, and how they deal with a pipe that could bring economic prosperity or destruction of a way of life shared for generations. Admission is €7.

South Tipperary Military History Society
John Holden will give the first of this season's lectures on Tuesday, January 18, in Slievenamon Golf Club at 8pm. John is a Member of the Defence Forces based in Kickham Barracks Clonmel and, among others, served a tour of duty in East Timor in 2000. Hence his lecture is titled, 'East Timor – A Millennium Remembrance'.

This should be a very worthwhile lecture based on the humanitarian and protective measures adopted by the United Nations in this war torn country and I urge as many members (and non-members) to come along as possible.

Places are now filled for our 'Trip To France', deposits mostly paid. Now all we have to do is look forward to our 1st trip abroad. Thanks to our chairperson, Kay Neagle, for her trojan work in organising this trip. Here's hoping for many more!

Our secretary Michael Dolan has been busy over the closed season sourcing some excellent material and persons to speak and places to go in the coming year. More details later and members will be given a copy of our programme of events as soon as possible.

We are always looking for new members who have an interest in any aspect of Military History, be it Ancient to Modern, Irish or anywhere in the world. If you would like to come along, our membership fee is €25 annually and €2 per lecture, or you can pay €5 and just come along to the lectures without being a member. Contact us at southtippmilitaryhistory@hotmail.com for more details of oncoming events or contact Kay Neagle on 086-0655428 or email kayneagle@eircom.net

We are also on Facebook where members can interact with each other and others from across the globe who share the same interest.

Hunting News
Tipperary Foxhounds had their best day last week from Ballylusky on Thursday with another big field out. Moving down the St. Johnstown Road Derry's first draw was on the right in McCormack's. Finding here hounds hunted two good circles before pushing their fox across the Ballylusky – Killenaule Road. Running here to Horan's Charlie did a U-Turn and ran back to where found.

Leaving right-handed this time he ran over Lyonshill, crossing the St. Johnstown – Killenaule road down into Bawnbrack. Swinging left here hounds ran through Blackmore's towards Guiry's where they checked and were stopped as they were running out of Ballylusky country and into country being hunted this week. This was a run of just under an hour over the best of Tipperary country.

Quite a number of followers made close acquaintance with the ground, including a few of the 'up front thrusters'. However, with the bone well gone out of the ground there was nothing hurt but their pride.

Hacking back to behind Messrs. Clancy's hounds did not find for quite a while. Finding eventually over the Ballylusky – Drangan road they finished the day with another nice spin. Running through Smiths they checked by a field recently manured. Cast forward they held the line again, ran to Hugh O'Donnell's and left-handed to Crohane Upper, John Farrell's where they marked to ground.

Burke Information wanted
I hope you can help. I was based in Clonmel recently for a few days trying to get a feeling for the background of my father's family and of course find any relatives I thought might help.

My great-grandmother, born Catherine Elizabeth Burke in October 1842, said she was born 'near Clonmel' and raised 'near Cashel'. Her father was Richard Burke who worked for Col Palliser as a land steward and also schoolteacher. She was born a Catholic but later (perhaps in the 1840s) the family worshipped at New Inn. The family moved to Blackrock near Dublin to start a school for William Prim Perry and by 1864 was in Newcastle (sister Mary Burke married Michael Thomas Shea, a schoolteacher in Templemore there). Richard Burke gave his occupation as land steward. No death record in Newcastle.

My great-grandmother became a teacher and married in Dungannon where she taught for many years. Her brothers and sisters may have gone to America (Chicago).

From Griffiths, I realised that Cloneen/ Cloran was a place where there were a number of Burkes and Heffernans and I visited the old graveyard where I found the stone inscribed 'Give a prayer for the family Burke', together with the later memorial to Bridget Burke.
Do you know anything about the Palliser estates (I think the family may have lived at Outeragh rather than Derryluskin)? I am interested not only in my family but also in the working of the land more widely. Or can you point me to anyone who might know.

Regarding Richard Burke and his wife who was a Heffernan, probably Margaret or Catherine) is it possible that he was from the Cloneen area? There were six children born approx 1840 to 1855, boys: Richard H, John, Patrick (possibly David); girls: Catherine, Mary and another. Richard Burke lived to age 85, his wife to 92 and the mother of one of them to 102. Do you know whether any Burkes still resident in the area might know or have connections with the family?

I wish I had found Fethard earlier on my trip - it seems a fascinating place with people very friendly as well as proud of the place. I chatted for a while to a helpful chap down by the former toffee factory as well as people in the pub at the wall.

Any pointers would be most welcome. With best wishes, Rosemary Wake. Email: erwake@btinternet.com

A place called 'The Cottage'?
I am trying to find out whether there was ever such a place called 'The Cottage' Fethard. The reason is that my grandmother lived there as a child, her father worked for a local landowner and was killed in a coaching accident whilst at work, then my grandmother went to live in a convent nearby.

My grandmother Sarah Walsh was born I think in 1898, and came from Fethard. She lost her father at a young age due to an accident whilst at work, I beleive he was a coach man for the local gentry. Her mother remarried to a gentleman called Kelly and had a second family. My grandmother then became one of 13 children. I beleive that my grandmother was sent to a local convent as she had a speach inpediment and the nuns were able to get her to sing her lessons.
I know that some of her brothers and sisters moved away from Ireland, I know that one sister married and went to Tasmania, another to Canada. The only names I have are Statia, Johanna, Bridie, Sarah, Tom John or James. I have tried looking in births deaths etc and come to a dead end at every turn.

Maybe just maybe somebody may have a memory of this family. My Grandmother died the same weekend as Princess Diana at the age of 99 and 52 weeks. Two Angels together. Kind Regards, Jacqui Goldie, Telephone 0044 1480 434434 Email: jacquigoldie@charpak.co.uk
