A large attendance enjoyed a fabulous ladies night out at the Village Inn, Moyglass, recently. The night commenced with wine tasting and finger food and this set the tone to put the audience in the mood for a night to remember. The Shebeen hosted very interesting and informative talk on styling and de-cluttering of wardrobes.

Meanwhile the models for the fashion show were having their hair styled and make-up applied in preparation for their visit to the catwalk later in the marquee. Free advice and demonstrations, from a number of advisors, were availed of by those who attended. A huge array of products and accessories were on display in the Shebeen and also comprehensive fitness advice was available for the health conscious ladies. In the marquee there was advice on oils and creams for skincare and for those interested in cooking there was a large display of modern cookware on view.

The highlight of the evening was the action on the catwalk which included a few surprise entries. Rumour has it that contracts are ready to be signed between two of the models and a leading Model Agency. With all the work done it was time to let the hair down and enjoy the remainder of the evening. The night rounded off with music, song and dance which completed a most enjoyable and relaxing night out for the ladies.

Fethard Annual Emigrant’s Newsletter

Anyone interested in helping with the production of this year’s Annual Emigrant’s Newsletter are asked to contact Joe Kenny, Rocklow Road, Fethard, Tel: 052 6131663 or by email: newsletter@fethard.com

Help is always needed gathering articles and photographs, indeed, one of the most time-consuming chores is trying to put captions to the photographs with correct names. Other ways people can help is in writing articles or inviting others to write articles in good time for publication.

The first issue of the Fethard & Killusty Emigrants’ Newsletter was published by the Legion of Mary in December 1959 and dated ‘Christmas 1960’. On checking the dates of the events and deaths featured in the newsletter we discovered that they all happened in 1959 so we concluded that the Newsletter was published in December 1959 and posted in January 1960. This ‘first newsletter’ was discovered in a drawer by Pat Shine, formerly from Crampscastle and now living in London.

Today, fifty years later, the newsletter has grown into a full colour 200-page production and is still posted free of charge to all our emigrants living throughout the world.

The Legend of Luke Kelly
The Fionn Mac Cumhaill players are getting to the time of year when productions for future are being planned. Readings for the 2011 production will commence in November but more details of this later. In the interim a fundraiser to cover costs for forthcoming productions will be held in McCarthy's Hotel on Saturday next, July 31st, with a concert in the Marquee, at 9.30pm. 'The legend of Luke Kelly', Chris Kavanagh and the Patriots with their Luke Kelly tribute. A must see for everyone, it’s hard to believe that it’s not the original artist performing. Tickets, priced at just €10 and can be secured by ringing 086 0834208 or from McCarthy's Hotel.

Local Area Mass
An open-air Mass will be held this evening, Thursday 29th July, by the Town Wall in The Valley at 7.30pm.

Peggy StauntonThe death has occurred in Manchester, England, of Mrs Margaret 'Peggy' Staunton, nee Keane, who died on Sunday 25th July.

Peggy, formerly from Knockelly was a daughter of the late Alice and Thomas Keane.

Fethard and Killusty Community Games
The local committee are very anxious to have the names of those travelling to support the Volleyball teams at HSE Community National Finals in Athlone in as soon as possible. A Bus will leave the GAA Park on both Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th August at approximately 7am. We realise this is a bit early but we want to give ample time for warm up etc.

This is definite but we need to have numbers to order the size of the bus. If you want to travel it is crucial that you contact 052 6131906 or confirm with either Mr. Denis Burke or Justin McGree. At the moment we are catering for 20 competitors, one manager and 5 supporters. A reminder that we are still looking for volunteers to help with the Church Gate Collection on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th August. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Fethard Tidy Towns
Fethard Tidy Towns recently placed two flower planters on the Main Street. The committee would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who helped out with this project. Nano Nagle and St. Patrick’s Boys Schools organised a non-uniform to raise funds to assist with the purchase of the planters. This involvement will enable the school children to identity their association with the project. Sincere thanks both school principals, Sr. Maureen and Mrs. Patricia Treacy, for their assistance. Financial support was received from The Abymill Theatre (Mr. Austin O’Flynn); Ms. Joan Anglim; Mrs. Celia Byrne; Ms. Marianne Shorthall; Fethard Credit Union and Shorthall Pianos.

A cake sale was also held to raise funds and thanks are extended to all those who contributed produce and helped on the day. The committee would also like to acknowledge the help of Mr. Jimmy Horan STCC and his team locally for their assistance to-date and the effort they made in getting the planters in place at such short notice. As funds become available other areas have been identified where additional flower planters could be placed. The committee have recently been presented a draft copy of the three-year Tidy Towns Plan for Fethard for consideration. It is envisaged that this document will guide activities of the group for the next few years.

U6s and U8s played Ardfinnan last Saturday in Fethard. The games were excellent with all displaying great skill and enthusiasm. Thanks to Ardfinnan for travelling to Fethard. In light of the Bank Holiday there will be no U6 or U8 training this Saturday morning.

Training for U10s takes place on Saturday Mornings at 11am in the GAA Field. There is still room for more U10 players, so if you would like to become involved please contact our secretary, Ann, on 086 896 3925 to be registered.

U12s won their Hurling Fixture away to Ballyneale last week. Thank you to those who came along to support in the rain. We were due to play Fr. Sheehys but this fixture has been postponed, a new date will be advised soon.

U14s were also successful and won their Hurling Fixture well at home to Fr. Sheehys. U16s are behind by two fixtures, new dates will be made known for these soon.

Cúl Camp will be held from August 23rd to 27th. It will run daily from10.30am to 2.30pm. The age group this year is 5 to 15 years. The cost is €55 for per child, with concessions of €100 for two and €135 for three. While the closing date has passed, there are a limited number of places left so contact Ann on 086 896 3925 or Annette on 086 812 0513 with your name. We now have a Facebook Page – Fethard Juvenile GAA - where you can see all our news, events and sometimes discussions on certain GAA topics.

If we think back to last year and the struggle Fethard had to field teams and stay in the Championship, it disheartened most. However, our coaches, Jimmy O'Meara, Steven O'Donnell and Michael Quinlan, developed a great team relationship and brought Fethard U16s to be County champions and kept them there again this year. Volunteering their time to not only train, but attend matches at most age levels to support the younger lads. They are true examples of the heart, spirit and soul of the GAA.
