Book Fair Calling
It’s getting to that time of year again when the Fethard Historical Society are preparing for the Tipperariana Book Fair on Sunday 8th February. The fair, now in its fourteenth year, has become a ‘must go to’ event for hundreds of people from all over the county, and many more from outside the county as well.

Over thirty book dealers from across the country fill the Ballroom with thousands of books of all shapes, sizes and subject matter. And the big spenders are the ‘collectors’ who come looking for that special book that they have been seeking to lay hands on for years.

One of the ways that the Historical Society makes some income is to sell ‘donated’ books at its own stall on the day. Therefore, the Society will gratefully receive donations of books from the public. Of course, donations of complete ‘Book Collections’ - which does happen from time to time - is an especially welcome help to the organizers.

The Society plans to publish two books itself this year. One, on Heraldry and Family Plaques in the Fethard area, by Gerard Crotty, and also a major history of the Fethard Area by Michael O’Donnell. These publications will be costly to produce and therefore the Fethard Historical Society will be especially grateful this year for all the support it can get.

It has been the policy of the Society from the beginning, to invite authors of ‘Tipperary Interest Books’- published in the preceding year- to come to the fair, to promote, sell and sign their books. 2008 was again a fruitful year for Tipperary books with over thirty major publications coming out in the county and many of these authors will be present on the day.

Now is the time to go through your books or to ask you family or friends to donate any unwanted books to a good cause. Any member of the committee will be glad to collect the books from you and contact can be made via bookfair@fethard.com or by phoning 052 23402(Terry Cunningham) or 052 31936 (Doirin Saurus).

Fethard & District Rugby Club
Mini Rugby Club travelled to Dungarvan last Sunday and put aside the miserable wet weather. Yet again we were blessed with fantastic support from the parents and the Children had an enjoyable morning of Rugby. The Under 7s fielded a squad of nine in their two games against Dungarvan and Youghal and played extremely well in both games.

Shane Neville, Angus MacDonald, Richard Anglim along with Michael Scully produced great tackles and improved passing throughout the two games. Backup in the maul was provided by Oisin Smullen, Thomas Morrissey and Matthew Gleeson who are improving with every game. Continued strong play came from Matthew Burke and James Phillips who showed determination throughout both games and had the hard task of helping out the opposition in the 2nd game and proved great team players. This team performed with great credit for their first game back after the Christmas break, along with the bad weather meaning that this was, unusually, their first game for six weeks and well done to all of them, keep up the good work.

The Under 8s had a fine game pulling out all the stops in this well matched contest. We witnessed excellent tackling from Georgina Murray, Matthew Thompson, Ruth MacDonald and Sadhbh Morrissey. Three tries were scored in a great morning’s rugby from this team and it proved that good passing is so important in the game. Great runs came from Harry Cummins, Danny Gleeson, Joe Carroll, Gavin Ryan and Daragh Lynch who all provided strong drive and determination. Another stepped up performance was evident from Frankie Meagher. This team throughout the whole game put into practise all their skills of passing and tackling into the match. Another great game from this team of ten. Well done.

A great night was had by all who attended the Class of ‘94 reunion on 26th December. It was great to catch up with some friends we had not seen since leaving school. Phone numbers and email addresses were exchanged on the night and maybe a few new members into our ‘Fethard class of 94’ group on Facebook. If you could not make it on the night but would like to catch up with some class mates you can catch up with about twenty class members through the Facebook group or email: classof94@ymail.com.

Dat Tipperary Accent
Two elderly gentlemen from Cork were having breakfast and a chat in a restaurant in Fethard while waiting for a funeral to emerge from the church. The conversation was a little loud as one of the gentlemen was a little hard of hearing. The waitress almost had to shout the menu to the man so that he could order.

Once she had returned to the kitchen with the order, it was with much amusement that the other customers heard the hard of hearing gentleman say to his friend, “Dja know what boy, dat waitress’ Tipperary accent is fierce hard to understand!”. The waitress who served him is from the Czech Republic.

Hunting News
“Rain stopped play” is a cricket saying when weather spoils the sport. Rain may not have stopped the Tipperary Foxhounds hunting last week but severe frost certainly played ‘Molly Bawn’ with the weeks hunting. Hounds did their best in very difficult conditions at Kedrah on Monday. Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday’s hunting however had to be cancelled. Derry took the hounds out to the bog on Wednesday and Saturday for hound exercise. Hunting on the bog at Liskeveen both days, on Wednesday hounds hunted reasonably well in covert but just could not own the line in the open. Thursday on the opposite site of the Liskeveen Road was much better. A good thirty-five minutes was enjoyed. Hounds got their fox away across the road, right through the forest on the other side and to ground a short distance out from the far end.

Very favourable comments were heard at the Coolmore meet on Monday and many congratulations offered to Mr. Michael Higgens on the excellent tributes paid to him in the article on his hunting career in last Saturday’s Irish Field. Described as an “Icon in the Irish Hunting World”, a tribute more than well deserved, special mention was made of his term of seventeen years as Master and Huntsman of the Tipperary Foxhounds. Michael clocked up 2095 consecutive hunting days without a break. Great to see him still going strong, two or three days per week, with the Gallant Tipps. Ad multos annos.

All long time followers of the Tipperary Foxhounds will learn with regret of the recent death of Dr. Tom Clery, formerly of, Mobarnane House, Fethard. A most enthusiastic supporter and follower of the Tipps he will be especially remembered for his invitation meets at Mobarnane, usually during the Christmas season. Sincere sympathy is extended from all hunting folk to his wife Jenny, daughter Sarah, son Simon, grandchildren and extended family.

With the White Heathers
The frost may have been gone by Sunday last but this was one day when the cure was worse than the disease. Gale Force winds driving sleeting rain made conditions just impossible from their meet at Ballyluskey. Following one short run to ground from Phelan’s Bog Donie was obliged to call a halt to proceedings after just one hour. The Ballyluskey White Heather Harriers meet on Sunday next, January 18th at Coleman Cross; Sunday 25th at Kilvemnon School (near Mullinahone) and on Sunday February 1st at Coolbawn Cross. All meets at 11am.

Winners in the January Members and Friends draw were 1st Prize, €200: Ms. Katie O’Flynn, Woodvale Walk and 2nd Prize, €100 Ms. Carol McCormack, Drangan.

Fethard's Internet Café
