This Friday, March 21st, is ‘D-Day’ for the winner of the unclaimed €300,000 National Lottery Jackpot ticket bought in Fethard Post Office on December 21st. To help jog your memory, the €6 ticket was bought on the weekend of two funerals in Fethard, the late Derek Wall and Tommy Fleming. As many family relative were in the area at the time, it could have been purchased by one of them. The ticket was bought for one draw and wasn't a ‘quick-pick’. If the lucky winner doesn't come forward before next Friday the €300,000 will be returned into the National Lottery fund. The winning Lotto-Plus (Draw 1) Numbers were: 7, 25, 28, 29, 32 and 41.

CAR BURNED OUT

A Toyota Starlet car, the property of Fethard art teacher Ms Pat Looby, was burned out at Kerry Street in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Ms Looby was awakened by a passer-by who saw the car on fire. The intense heat blew in the double-glazed front windows of a neighbouring house. She immediately phoned the Gardai and the Fire-Brigade and notified neighbours to move their cars. Her prompt action prevented what could have been a major disaster as only a very narrow footpath just stood between Pat’s and neighbouring dwelling houses and the burning car. The petrol pumps on Ward’s Garage forecourt were also very close by.
Preliminary enquiries would seem to indicate the car was either deliberately set on fire or short circuited wrongly in an aborted theft attempt.

MORE LOCAL SUPPORT NEEDED
Local Gardai have asked for more local support to help solve incidents of crime in the Fethard area. If we want to keep crime at bay in the area, a much higher level of local cooperation is needed in helping Gardai with their work. It is essential that all suspicious activities are noted and reported. We should also keep a closer look on our neighbours property and record unusual activities. All information can be passed on confidentially to members of the local Garda or to the Garda Confidential Freephone: 1800 666 111

FAUGHEEN 50 ROAD RACE
In October 2001 a couple of motorcycle enthusiasts decided to look into the possibility of reviving the 'Faugheen 50' event. One thing led to another and on 20th January the first meeting of the 'Faugheen 50 Supporters Club Ltd." took place in a garage in Ballinacrooney. The club has now over 50 full members and many more associate members whose prime intention is to see roadracing back in Faugheen in 2003.

If you remember the Faugheen races in the 1970's and are still a motorcycle supporter you can get further details on joining the club from their website www.faugheen50.com

FETHARD YOUTH CLUB
Last Saturday night saw the beginning of the ‘Copping On’ project at the club. It involves ten young people and explores the causes of antisocial behaviour and crime in the community. It is being facilitated by Noelle O'Dwyer, Outreach Worker for Tipperary Regional Youth Service, and is a Department of Justice initiative.
Our boys and girls are now training for the Regional five-a-side soccer tournament which will take place in April. Further details will follow.
Congratulations to the lads (past and present club members) who played in the under 21 football in Ardfinnan on Sunday 16th and also the lads who played for Killusty in the soccer final in Tipperary Town on Monday 17th. You always do Fethard proud.
The club will be closed on Saturday 22nd March but will open as usual on the following Saturday night. Hoping everyone had a good St. Patrick's weekend and enjoyed the fine weather. Finally, we continue on our quest for leaders - please contact us if you are at all interested in offering the odd Saturday night in a good cause.

FETHARD RUGBY CLUB
Another busy weekend in the community field in Fethard, with our under/8s and under/10s training on Saturday morning and the under/12s playing a great game against Waterford City, which resulted in a two all draw. This was a fast game with some fine passing movements in the backs which saw Josh Hally, Joe Kelly, Eoin O’Connell and William Grassick always putting the opposition under pressure. In the forwards the two big cousins Dave Gorey and Paddy Teehan had fine games especially in the lineouts.
On Sunday morning our 8s, 10s and 12s played Cashel on a beautiful sunny morning. Our under/8s had a very well played game of rugby resulting in a 3-1 victory. With Philip Maher and Joss Murray defending and attacking well when they met with Niall Anglim and Steven Hickey of the Cashel team who attacked brilliantly. Eoin Walsh, Gavin Delaney, Cian O’Connell and Colin Meagher gave great runs and defending well was Luke Keating, Jack Devaney, James Mackey and Shane Power.
The U/ 10 had another battle almighty with our friends from Cashel, with Fethard emerging victorious on this occasion. Fethard took an early lead when some fine passing saw Daniel Hickey cross the corner, But Cashel levelled on the brink of half time. The Fethard lads kept applying pressure and fought hard for possession which resulted in them scoring again. This was a fine team performance and everyone gave their utmost.
The under/12s had to give their best in their game but never the less gave a fine performance. Stephen Healan, David Hall and J.P. McGrath had fine games in the forwards setting up many balls for Shane Kavanagh who, in his first game at scrumhalf, had a fine game. James Kelly and Eoin O’Connell tackled very well.
The under/12s train on Friday evening at 6.30pm and play in Cashel on Saturday in the cup. Under 8s and 10s train as usual on Saturday mornings at 11am.

80th BIRTHDAY
Belated happy birthday wishes to Timmy O’Riordan, Barrack Street, who celebrated his eightieth birthday on February 12th. Timmy is well known in Irish Greyhound racing circles and what better place to celebrate the event but in the sumptuous surroundings of the new restaurant at Shelburne Park, Dublin. Timmy’s six children and eleven grandchildren joined the festivities. The icing was really put on the cake when he recorded a double at Shelburne on the night with his litter brother and sister, ‘Honchos Hare’ and ‘Honchos Trix’.

OFFER FOR FETHARD RUGBY CLUB
Paul Looby asked to pass this message on to the members of Fethard Rugby Club:

When my Dad was home recently, he brought some London Irish goodies. The Fethard club expressed a wish to link up with London Irish. I have been advised by John Flynn (Head of Rugby for the Amateur Club) that the U-12's are on tour in Dublin over Easter and would gladly meet up either with some of the officials from the Fethard Club or even to play a game whilst on tour. The same could be reciprocated on any trip to London by the Fethard club. John's email address is johnf@blackstone.freeserve.co.uk and I have sent him a copy of this email. Perhaps you could pass this on to the relevant person(s) within the Fethard club.

SR PHILOMENA O’BRIEN HONOURED

Anne Gallagher from Patchogue, New York, was chairperson for the St Patricks Day Dinner Dance in support of the St Ursula Retreat Center on Saturday, March 1st. At the dance, Sr. Philomena O'Brien (formerly from The Green Fethard) was honoured and joined by many of her past pupils from Howard Beach where she taught them during the late 1940s / early 1950s. They still have wonderful memories of their days in Our Lady of Grace School in Howard Beach and all could see how beloved she still is to them. Congratulations Sr. Philomena from all in Fethard!

THIS WEEK'S - 'PIC OF THE PAST'
If you have an old photograph of interest to our readers why not email it to us and we will include it on next week's 'Pic of the Past'
This photograph was taken in the Fethard Arms after Fethard won the 1979 Junior Hurling League South Final. Back L to R: 'Bull’ Lonergan, Mary McCormack, Stephen McCormack, Michael Downes, Bridget Morrissey, Alfie Brett, Davy Morrissey. Front L to R: John Gazely, Michael Keane, Mick Dineen, and Miceál McCormack.

The junior hurlers of Fethard had earlier in the year surrendered their championship crown of 1978 but in this Junior League Final this disappointment was all forgotten. They had a seven points Win over Moyle Rovers but the exchanges were tough and the play over-robust which led to two players getting their walking papers. The result was never in doubt but in Rovers favour they battled all through and were unlucky for at least one goal more. Fethard had the edge in fitness and all-around skill. Michael O’Riordan and John Keane were Fethard’s absentees. Andy Fox emerged top scorer with 2-1 to his credit and was a constant worry to the Rovers backs. He got solid support from Micheál McCormack, Michael Healy and Noel Sharpe with Dick Prendergast, the two Daveys, Morrissey and Fitzgerald were well on top in the backline. Rovers had fine players in M. Looby, G. McGrath, P. Boyle and J. Russell. At the short whistle Fethard had 3-7 to 0-3 for Rovers and when the game ended Rovers had narrowed the gap to 4-7 to 1-9.

The Fethard League title holders were: S. McCormack (goal), Martin Cuddihy, D. Fitzgerald, C. Looby, D. Morrissey, D. Prendergast, P. Kenrick, Phil Byrne, S. O’Gorman, Noel Sharpe, Pat Byrne, Andy Fox, Michael McCormack, M. Healy and Noel Byrne.
