Extra digits on your phone number!
From the 3rd November all phone numbers in the 052 area will have to prefix their five-digit number with two more digits to meet the changing dynamics of the Irish communications market. The old numbers and new number will work together for a period of six months after which your old number will cease. If your old number begins with 3, as most Fethard numbers do, you will have to add 61 to the start, e.g. Fethard Community Office’s phone number 31000 will now change to 6131000.

Book Launch in Drangan
MIchael Hall
Photographed at St. Mary's Graveyard in Drangan are L to R: Mary Cahill (National Museum of Ireland), the late Michael Hall (Editor), Brendan St. John (Chairman St. Mary's Cemetery Restoration Committee) and Fr. Tony Lambe P.P. Drangan & Cloneen Parish.

On Sunday 2nd November, Ms Mary Guinan-Darmody, Local Studies Department, Tipperary Libraries, will launch a book that records and maps the graves in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Drangan village. This launch will take place at 12 noon in the Community Hall, Drangan. The launch will be preceded by 11am Mass at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, which will be offered for all the souls interred in this old and historical cemetery.

The book was a labour of love for its editor Michael Hall, who sadly passed to his eternal reward in June 2008. Local historian, Michael Hall, was a great source of knowledge and a great ‘Friend of Fethard’. Michael will be long remembered in this parish for the many articles he supplied for Fethard & Killusty Emigrants’ Newsletter.

The book records the details of almost two hundred graves in St. Mary’s Cemetery and should be of great interest to the many families connected to this old burial ground.

Paul playing for Munster
Well done to Paul Fitzgerald in keeping a clean sheet for Munster last weekend. Paul was Tipperary’s only representative on the Munster football team that defeated Ulster in Fermoy. The final score was 1-5 to 0-5. We wish Paul and his colleagues the very best of luck in the final on this Saturday 1st November in Portlaoise when they take on Connaught under lights, preceded by the hurling final.

Hunting News
Opening Meet of Tipperary Foxhounds in Fethard
Derry Donegan, Huntsman, and Paul Grady, First Whip, lead the field by the Town Wall in Fethard to commence the 2008-'09 Hunting Season (Photo courtesy of John Kenrick).

The Opening Meet of Tipperary Foxhounds in Fethard, favoured by good weather, attracted a very large crowd of mounted, foot and car followers on Monday last. A longstanding tradition was broken when the actual meet, for health and safety and modern day traffic throughflow, was transferred from Main Street to McCarthy’s Hotel. The spacious area, formerly known as McCarthy’s Orchard, proved an ideal gathering point for the large crowd attending. Following the traditional ‘Stirrup Cup’, lavishly dispensed by Annette, over one-hundred mounted followers, led by huntsman, Derry Donegan, and First Whip, Paul Grady, moved off via The Pound and Watergate for Rocklow.

Opening Meet

While foxes were in short supply and scent was rather patchy, nevertheless, an excellent days hunting was enjoyed by one and all. McCarthy’s Bog, Ballybough Bridge and Rathvin Fort proved blank. A fox from John Neville’s at Kilnockin ran a short circle before going to ground. Hounds found again at Rocklow House. This fox rand to the Killenaule Road where hounds were stopped at Kilnockin Hill was not being hunted. Drawing upstream from Rocklow through Rathcoole and Ballyvaden hounds did not find again until drawing the Ballyvaden Fort which held a brace. One of these was hunted well towards the Cashel – Fethard road before getting to ground at O’Connor's. A fox from Power’s Wood provided a fitting end to the day, running a good left-handed circle to the river, back over the Ballyvaden Lane to the fort where they lost him.

Opening Meet

Thus concluded the opening meet day of the new season. Judging by the large concourse of people out the future of hunting and the Tipperary Foxhounds looks very good indeed. One long time follower was heard to describe the traffic on the Rocklow Road during hunting as “like Tramore on a fine Sunday in August”.

Opening Meet

“Hark forr’ard, Hark forr’ard, hounds are away,
How glorious the sound on Opening Meet Day,
Old friends still gather, new ones to greet,
Is go mbeirimíd beo ar an am seo arís”.

Opening Meet

The penultimate day of the Autumn hunting season at Tullamaine on Wednesday last is worth recording as the best mornings hunting of that period was enjoyed. From the main covert hounds ran to the road at Coolmoyne Ballalley, right-handed under the Moate back to the covert. Out on the far side they ran to Eamonn Walsh’s and hunted a big circle through Slattery’s and Martley’s where the intervention of a fresh found fox concluded a brilliant forty-five minutes. Finding on the Moate hounds ran over the cul-de-sac, through Horan’s to the old point-to-point course. Left-handed here to the Rosegreen Road they swung right-handed and crossed the road near the Raceway to Long’s. Pushing him out on the Lowesgreen side they recrossed the road to the Sandpit where they checked for the first time and were stopped at 12.15pm having hunted for almost continuously for over three hours. — EAN

Fethard GAA Club News
At club level, our activities on the field resume this weekend when we play the Junior A county football semifinal on Saturday at 2.30pm in Ballingarry when we play mid-champions Moycarkey. On Sunday we have the Intermediate Hurling South Final replay in Kilsheelan at 2.30pm against Moyle Rovers. The very best of luck to all.
Our Lotto Jackpot was not won. The numbers drawn were 8, 12, 19 and 26. We had two match three winners who received €75 each: Esther Breen (Barrack Street, Fethard) and Abigail Doyle (Woodvale Walk, Fethard). The €50 Lucky Dip was won by Willie O’Meara (Killusty, Fethard). Thanks to Harrington Developments for providing the tickets.

Fethard and District Rugby Club
Our under 18s travelled to Waterpark and were well beaten on a score line of 40-7. The score does not tell the full story as this was a game of two halves; the first half saw Fethard dominate the ball and had the Waterpark side under pressure. Despite this pressure, Waterpark scored first when at least six missed tackles gifted them their first try. Fethard responded almost immediately when the resumed Fethard pressure released Chris Sheehan to run in a try under the post. John Lawlor duly converted. From the kick-off Waterpark worked the ball up field and again missed tackles allowed Waterpark in for their second easy try, leaving the score 12-7 at half time.

The Fethard player’s lack of fitness was in full evidence in the second half when Waterpark ran in four unanswered tries. Despite this heavy defeat the Fethard lads gave us a glimpse of their true potential when they completely dominated the second quarter and witnessed some fine individual displays, particularly our scrum-half Willie Power and our forwards David Hall and Harry O’Connell. Chris Sheehan on the wing also had a fine game.

We travel to Clanwilliam next week and will need to play for the full 80 minutes as we need to win this one.
