The death has occurred on Saturday 9th August of Mrs Mary Ahessy, Ballinard. Reposing at her daughter, Mary Cranitch's residence in Ballinard from 3pm to 9pm on Monday 11th August.
Requiem Mass at 11am on Tuesday in the Church of Our Lady of the Nativity, Cloneen, followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery. Family flowers only.
Paul Dooley Recital kicks off Town Wall Medieval Festival on 23rd August
As part of the Fethard Walled Towns Day Medieval Festival, the renowned Irish Harpist Paul Dooley, and special guests ‘Doulç'amor’ from France, will give a concert at the Holy Trinity Church of Ireland in Fethard at 8.15pm on Saturday 23rd August.
Paul Dooley is one of the very few Irish people who play the Irish harp in its historical form and style and studied the construction of medieval Irish harps in Dublin during the early 1980s and has built several harps. He started his performing career on the metal-strung harp in 1986 and has appeared on numerous CD recordings and television soundtracks.
His repertoire consists mostly of traditional Irish dance music, including jigs and reels, some of which he has learned from recordings and printed music but mostly learned from other musicians: pipers, flute players and fiddlers. This music proves a real challenge for any type of harp and consequently hasn't been explored very much on the instrument.
Paul will talk about the history of the instrument and this event promises to be a unique and enjoyable part of the Medieval weekend. Tickets are €10 each, which includes Cheese & Wine reception, and can be purchased at Fethard Post Office. Tel: 052 31217.
Preparing for Walled Towns Day Medieval Festival on 24th August
Pupils of St. Patrick's Boys National School proudly displaying some of their heraldic banners they have prepared for this year's Medieval Festival Fancy Dress Parade in Fethard on Sunday 24th August.
Preparations are very much underway for this years Walled Towns Day Medieval Festival in Fethard which will be held on Sunday 24th August. Children from the local schools have been busy preparing their heraldic banners for the Fancy Dress Parade and everyone is invited to enter the parade and join in the medieval spirit of the day. There are lots of prizes to be won for best costumes etc.
Extra events will take place on Saturday 23rd August to kick off the festival. At 8pm the renowned Irish Harpist Paul Dooley, will give a special concert at the Holy Trinity Church of Ireland. Tickets are €10 each. There will also be a ‘Battle of the Bands’ on Saturday afternoon by the Town Wall. The local bands will also play on Sunday morning outside the Town Hall from 1.30 to 2pm.
We are also promised some very interesting performances from two French musicians ‘Doulç'amor’ who will entertain on Main Street and by the Town Wall over the weekend.
On Sunday the renowned ‘Lee Valley String Band’ from Cork will play their particular type of Old Time and Bluegrass music by the Town Wall. We will also have the usual craft and food stalls along with archery, re-enactors, puppeteers, nature walks, mandala making and fun for all the family. Tell your friends to come along.
The running of the Walled Towns Day Medieval Festival is coordinated by Fethard & Killusty Community Council and made possible through the help and support from the Heritage Council of Ireland, Failte Ireland, South Tipperary County Council and Fethard Historical Society.
Sadels Restaurant reopens in Burke Street
Sadels Restaurant, formerly in Main Street, will reopen in Thursday 14th August in Burke Street in the completely refurbished building that was formerly Holohan’s Pub. Proprietor Catherine O’Sullivan has also opened a guesthouse in the same building and would like to thank all the well-wishers who have encouraged her in this new venture. The restaurant will open for breakfast at 8.30am in the mornings, serve lunch from 12.30pm to 4pm and in the evenings from 5.30pm to 9.30pm offer a full a la carte menu. Pilgrimage to Holy Year Cross on Slievenamon
The annual pilgrimage to the Holy Year Cross, takes place this coming Sunday 10th August, with ceremonies beginning at 1.45pm, from the hill wall. As usual, we ask patrons to arrive early and allow at least twenty minutes to walk from the car park in O'Donnells field to the hill wall. For those who are unable to make the climb, Rosary will be recited at the mass rock in O'Donnells field, and Mass will be celebrated on the return of the walkers, this will be at 3.15pm approximately.
As we say every year, if you have never been on this pilgrimage, or if you have missed a few years, why not come and join us this year. We notice in our visitor’s book that more and more people are joining us from our neighbouring parishes, this is a welcome trend that we hope will continue to grow in the future.

Diamond Jubilee Celebration and Book Launch
Congratulations to Canon Matthew Hayes who recently celebrated his Diamond Jubilee at his family home in Rathcoole on 12 July. There was a big gathering of the immediate and extended family for the open-air Mass in Rathcoole, which also coincided with the launching of his new book, ‘Ever Loved but Lost a While’, memoir of his secondary school days and on the seminaries he attended. The memoir is set in the context of World War II period and should be of particular interest to Fethard readers. It is a sequel to his first book that proved to be highly popular, namely ‘I Slept With Dan’. Copies are available at Newport's Newsagency, Main Street.

Tinsley Bridge at Grove
Tinsely Bridge at Grove where tremendous restoration work has been undertaken over the past few years and is now nearing completion. L to R: John Sheehan, Willie MacClara and Rosemary Ponsonby.
In the 1830s the house at Grove was much remodelled by the architect, William Tinsley, born in Clonmel in 1804 and who made quite a reputation for himself, later in life, in the American mid-West especially in the design of colleges and churches. At Grove he added two wings and had built a portico of unfluted Ionic columns at the main entrance and also two bridges. Tinsley Bridge, the larger of the two, was built over the river Clashawley at Grove. The historic bridge, more commonly called Kilmaclugh Bridge, on Grove Estate has been only crossable on foot since being partially demolished by the huge flood of 1947. Today the historic bridge is almost back to its former glory. Mr and Mrs Ponsonby are to be complemented on their efforts in having this architectural treasure restored to its former glory.
Fethard and Killusty Community Games
Church Gate Collection in aid of Community Games will be taken up at all masses in the parish on this coming weekend 9th and 10th August.
This year the area was successful in getting two individual competitors qualified for the HSE Community Games National Finals in Mosney. Sarah Slattery, Jossestown, was our representative in Art, and Darragh Lynch, Coolmore, will contest the under-8 60m athletics event on the weekend of August 22nd to 24th.

Dublin Motorcycle Touring Club visits Fethard

Fethard was the first stop for the Dublin Motorcycle Club on their 35th annual tour of Ireland. Over 120 motorcycles with their riders and pillion passengers rode from Rooskey in Co Roscommon to Fethard, where they stopped for refreshments in McCarthy’s, before getting instructions for the second leg of their trip. That took them to Tarbert in Co Kerry, where they were going to cross the Shannon Estuary on the ferry, before resting up for the night in Co Clare. The following day would bring them up through Connaught to Ulster, before they finished their journey in Dundalk, in their home province of Leinster. The round trip is 600 miles each year. Willy and the Poor Boys
Willy and the Poor Boys will play at McCarthy’s on Saturday 16th August. This was meant to be the Barbecue night for the Frank Purcell Golf Classic in aid of Trust, but the organisers decided to defer the Golf Classic for a month to the 12th and 13th September due to the successful campaign of the Tipperary hurling team in the 2008 championship (as many of the Classic’s supporters are involved with the Tipperary team).
The band will play, as planned. The session will mark the end of Fethard Rugby Club’s Tag Rugby festival for over 35s (with younger ladies I hasten to add). It is also the night before Tipperary’s All Ireland semi final match in Croke Park against Waterford. Admission is free. Details of the Trust Golf Classic will be announced next week.

Hannie Leahy, founder member of Fethard Country Markets in 1947, is still a very active member and is photographed above baking bread for this week's Friday morning market, which is held every week in the Town Hall Fethard. The first Country Market was held in Fethard on 17th January 1947 and Fethard is the longest established Country Market in the country

With one senior football game to play Fethard have made it to the last four of the South Championship by virtue of their win in Ballingarry last Wednesday and with other results going their way, currently are on 8 points with three teams behind them on 7 points, including Cahir, whom Fethard meet on Sunday 10th August in Ardfinnan at 7pm. Our win over Killenaule on a scoreline, Fethard 1-10, Killenaule 0-8, was a hard earned victory with Killenaule making a really good second half and with a little luck could have pulled off the points.
Best for Fethard on the night were Ian Kenrick, Damien Byrne, Aiden Lonergan, Aiden Fitzgerald and John P Looby. In Junior A Football the play-off to make the last four of the South Championship was played on Thursday last in Ned Hall Park when we came out on top on a scoreline, Fethard 3-7, Newcastle 1-9. To the fore for Fethard were Nicky Murphy, Jimmy O’Meara in the back line, Tomás Keane at midfield, Conor McCarthy, Miceál Spillane, and top scorer Johnny Neville 1-3.
The fixture for Round 7 of the Intermediate Hurling is Fethard to play St Marys in Goatenbridge on Friday 8th August at 7.15pm. In Senior Football Round 7 Fethard will play Cahir in Ardfinnan on Sunday 10th August 7pm. In Minor Hurling Fethard play Mullinahone in Cloneen on Wednesday 13th August at 7.30pm and in Round 5, Fethard play Cahir in Clonmel at 7.30pm on Friday 15th August.

Fethard Walled Town Medieval Festival
On Sunday 24th August a Medieval festival will be held in Fethard town to celebrate Irish Walled Towns Day, with events to suit all ages. The day will commence at 11am with the launch of an exhibition of ceramic works by Dóirín Saurus and her students in the Town Hall. During the day there will be a talk and tour of the local flora and fauna by Shay Hurley and Liam Burke.
A Fancy Dress Parade through the town is scheduled to start at 2pm and will be led by heraldic shields made by local primary school children, hunting horns and Irish Wolfhounds. A competition will be held for the best-dressed medieval costume in the parade. Prizes will be awarded to: Best Male Adult, Best Female Adult, Best Male Child and Best Female Child.
The parade will culminate in a medieval fair by the town walls to include events such as battle re enactments and traditional craft stalls such as silver smithing, weaving, wood carving and turning, basket making, leather working, butter making, willow work and a Farmers market.
There will also be street entertainers including puppeteers, a chance to try your hand at archery, music by local bands and The Lee Valley Band as well as visiting Medieval French musicians. Food will be available on the day. A large colourful Shell Mandala will be created by the Town Wall during the day also. So come along and celebrate Fethard’s rich heritage and the last few days of the summer.
The Fethard Walled Town Medieval Festival is organised by Fethard & Killusty Community Council and part funded by the Heritage Council of Ireland, Failte Ireland and South Tipperary County Council.
In conjunction with the day, South Tipperary County Museum are hosting a colouring competition for 6 year olds and over.
Entries are available from the County Museum, Mick Delahunty Square, and in local Newspapers.
Completed entries must be submitted to the County Museum by 4pm on Saturday 16th August. Make sure to put name, address and telephone number on reverse. Battle of the Bands
A Battle of the Bands will take place in the Walled Garden at McCarthy’s on Saturday 23rd August in conjunction with Fethard Walled Town Medieval Festival. Bands that wish to enter can send a demo to Vincent (Jasper) at McCarthy’s or to Premier Music Store in Clonmel. Ten bands will be chosen to battle it out. The entry fee is €50 per band, payable if the band is accepted into the competition. First prize is studio time to record a demo with a professional sound engineer.
