Patrician Presentation School News
Welcome back to all students and staff at the beginning of the 2007-2008 school year. May our first year pupils enjoy their school days in Patrician Presentation and may they reach their potential on our school.

Congratulations
Congratulations is extended to all our 2007 Leaving Certs on their excellent results and we wish them well in their chosen careers. Best wishes in particular to John Frewen on achieving the maximum 600 points in his Leaving Cert. May he achieve much fulfilment and success during his undergraduate days as a medical student in Trinity College.

International Students
This year once again we welcome three students to our school as part of the experimental International Learning Programme. Anne-Marie Limpack and Esther Muller from Germany, and Angelico Bano from Italy will join the 5th Year class. Ukranian student, Lyubov Novikova, has also joined our First Year class.

Successful Summer Activities
Well done to Damien Byrne, School Completion Programme Coordinator, on the success of his summer programme. Under his guidance, current pupils and incoming pupils took part in a variety of interesting activities ranging from art, dance, surfing and bowling to sound production.

Transition Year
As part of their induction programme, Transition Year will climb Slievenamon from the Kilcash side on Thursday 6th September. The school’s transition year programme will again be interesting and varied this year with activities ranging from yoga and E.C.D.L. to road safety.

Pupils will follow a regular programme in their core subjects with the opportunity also to sample a variety of subjects on the Leaving Cert programme such as, Physics, Economics, Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Art, Business and History.

Congratulations to last year’s Transition Year students who successfully completed all seven ECDL modules during the 2006-2007 school year. Indeed, National Coordinator of Transition Year, Mr Michael O’Leary, on a visit to the school last week, congratulated the school on this achievement.

Book Rental
In cooperation with the Parents’ Association, the school has introduced a ‘Book Rental Scheme’ for first year pupils. It is hoped to extend this facility throughout the school in the coming years.

South Hurling Champions

Fethard Under-14 team, South Champions, photographed after beating St. Mary's 1-9 to 0-5 in the Under-14 South Hurling Final played in Clonmel on Monday evening last.

Congratulations to Fethard’s Under-14 hurlers who put on a terrific performance against a physically stronger St. Mary’s side on Monday night last to win the South Final before a large attendance at Clonmel Óg GAA field.

After a slow scoring start the team finally settled and commanded the field in almost every area with some great individual displays of hurling. The final score was 1-9 to 0-5 and it was a particular proud day for Paddy Lawrence, who had three of his grandchildren on the team, Alan (captain), Garreth, and his great grandchild Dean Butler.

Trust Golf Classic and Barbecue
The Frank Purcell Memorial Golf Classic in aid of the Trust Charity, which was postponed earlier this summer due to unseasonable heavy rain, will now take place on Saturday 15th September   at Slievenamon Golf Course. All teams that wish to participate can ring Brendan Kenny (052) 32213 at Slievenamon for tee times.

Prizes will be presented that night in McCarthys, followed by a charity auction and barbecue. Admission is free and music on the night will be provided by ‘Supernoodles’ from Kilkenny (better known around Fethard by their old name Back Door).

Once again, many thanks to all those who have given us so much support over the past few years.

Fethard ICA Notes
On Tuesday next 11th September, Fethard ICA will resume our monthly meetings. Sadly, in these last few months, a number of our present and past members have suffered bereavements, we think of Mary Tierney, Betty Lanigan, Monica Aherne and Kathleen Maher, and their families. We would like to offer our sincere sympathy to you all.

Our guest Speaker on Tuesday night will be Carla Walsh. Carla has recently opened her beauticians business at Main Street, Fethard, and has kindly agreed to come along and give a talk on beauty care and the use of make-up, and tells us about the various treatments on offer at her salon. This is sure to be a most interesting talk. Carla suggests that members bring along their make-up bag and we can have some fun experimenting! Hope to see as many of the members as possible on the night.

Table Quiz in aid of Africa

A table quiz in aid of Tracy Piggott’s ‘Playing for Life’ charity will be held in Butler’s Bar on Friday 14th September at 9pm. Tables cost €25 and the proceeds will help send two local volunteers, Carmel Rice and Mary Cloonan, to work in Tanzania with the project later this month.

On the night there is also a raffle, which includes two very attractive valuable prizes and lots of other smaller prizes. First prize is one year’s membership of Clonmel Park Hotel Leisure Centre, and second prize is two nights bed and breakfast for two people in the Dear Park Hotel, Howth, which includes hot-stone massage at DP Spa.

Mattie’s Clinic on The Square
Deputy Mattie McGrath will be in clinic at 6.30pm on Friday the 7th September in his mobile unit at The Square in Fethard.

Knitting Group Resumes

Sr Juliana and Sr Winnie photographed with a selection of baby cardigans and blankets knitted during the summer by some of the group for Sr. Winnie's mission in Africa.

The Knitting Group commenced meeting again on Tuesday, 4th September at 7.30pm in the convent.  Anyone with an interest in knitting or crochet is very welcome to come along on any Tuesday night.  There has been a huge revival of interest in knitting in recent years. Type the word ‘knitting’ into Google on your computer and you will come up with over 21 million (yes, million) results!  With so many different types of yarn available now there is something for everyone.  Don't be put off even if you haven't taken up needles for years.  So why not come along any Tuesday for some knitting in a very relaxed atmosphere, a cup of tea and a chat.

Fethard Bridge Club
The 2007 Bridge season in Fethard commences on Wednesday 12th September under our incoming president, Bernie O’Meara.  Some of our members continued to play bridge over the summer in Clonmel and Ballinure and others just took a break.  We hope to see everyone back in the Tirry Centre at 7.30pm sharp on the 12th and new members are especially welcome.

Fethard GAA Club News
The Minor Football B South Final was played on Friday 31st August in Cahir with our team finishing victorious on a scoreline, Fethard 2-14, Ballyporeen 2-10. Our young team showed tremendous character on the night coming back from a nine-point deficit after 15 minutes, Ballyporeen 2-5, Fethard 0-2, to go on and win and take back to Fethard for the first time, the Dick Cummins Cup. In so doing they achieved a record at this age level that was last recorded in 1952 when we won the South Championship double in football and hurling.

This was also our first time winning this grade having lost in 2004 to Cahir.  We had first class displays on the night from Gavin Fitzgerald, Adrian Lawrence, Christopher Sheehan, Eoin O’Connell and Declan Doyle. The future looks very bright for the Club. The team was: James McGrath (Sparagoulea), Gavin Fitzgerald (Cashel Rd), Cathal Gorey (Jesuits Walk), Kieran O’Connell (Coolmoyne), Tom O’Connell (Coolmoyne), Christopher Sheehan 0-4 (2f) (Woodvale Walk), James Kelly (Rathvin), Declan Doyle 2-1(Strylea), Aaron O’Donovan (The Valley), Alan O’Connor (St. Patrick’s Place), Eoin O’Connell 0-3 (Coolmoyne), Dean Tobin 0-1 (Woodvale Walk), Ben Walsh (Main St), Adrian Lawrence 0-3 (1f) (Woodvale Walk), Kieran Ryan 0-1 (Slievenamon Close). Subs used were: Jonathan Fleming 0-1 (Red City), Michael Fleming (Red City). Other subs were: Daniel Hickey (St. Patrick’s Place), Eoin Healy (The Green), Jack O’Sullivan (Main St), Mathew Fitzgerald (Barrack St), and our captain who had broken his collar bone at training on the previous Wednesday night, Eoin Condon (Woodvale Walk). Well done to date to all involved in the backroom and we wish you the beast of luck in the county semifinal in early October.

The Senior Football South Championship continues this weekend when we play Cahir. Check sports page for date and time. The venue is Clonmel.

The Junior A Football Championship was played on Wednesday 29th August which finished on a scoreline of, Fethard 3-10, Commercials 1-14. There will now be a three-way play off between Fethard, Cahir and Commercials for the two places left in the quarterfinal stages of the South Championship.

There was a great display on the night from our elder statesmen on the field of play which helped us ground out a victory of note.  The team was: Glen O’Meara, Connie O’Flynn, Philly Blake, Tommy Gahan, Liam O’Brien, Willie Morrissey, Mike Kelly, Kevin O’Donnell, Nicky Murphy, Jason Nevin 0-3, Brian Burke 1-0, Johnny Leahy 1-0, Martin Coen 1-4 (1-2f), Tom Anglim 0-2, and Willie O’Meara. Sub used was Paul Kendrick 0-1, and other subs were Ed Sheehan, James Smyth and Alan Burke.

The Under 21 B Hurling is also fixed for this weekend against Cahir, Check sports page for date and time and venue.

Well done to our County Minor Hurlers in winning the All Ireland on Sunday last in Croke Park and to all players from our division who were part of this success, this their second in two years.  Well done also to our own Eoin O’Connell who was part of the under-16 hurling county team that won the All Ireland last week. Hard luck to Aaron Conran who played on the Tipperary Under 14 hurling team that lost in the inter-county Tony Forristal Tournament final to Waterford also last week.

County Board Draw congratulations to Jill Ryan, East Lodge, Coolanure, Fethard, on winning a trip to the Canaries last week and to the winning promoter, Nicky O’Shea, who also receives €200.

The Lotto Jackpot of €6,500 was not won. The numbers drawn were 6, 11, 13 and 28. We had one match three winner of €150 which went to Pat Houlihan, c/o Bob Fitzgeralds (O’Connell St, Clonmel). The €50 Lucky Dip was won by Caroline Quinlan (Tullamaine, Fethard). Thanks to Harrington Developments for supplying the tickets.

Fethard Juvenile GAA Club
Our under-14 team qualified for this years south final on Thursday evening of last week when the played Kilsheelan in a much-anticipated match in Monroe. Fethard came away with a very convincing win on the night.

These young men did their club and trainers proud on the night and gave their supporters a thrilling game of hurling with a great team display of talent and some wonderful individual displays from Alan Lawrence, Ger Maher, Owen Fitzgerald and Ronan Fitzgerald in goal who were all on firing form on the night. Damien Morrissey and Frankie Donovan played their socks off as well and we wish them the very best of luck when they head out against St. Mary's on Monday evening. With the teamwork these young men show every time they play together, we can only wish them luck in going all the way.

Our under-10s played host to Rosegreen at home on Sunday morning of last week with a hurling challenge match and what a delight they were to watch. Some of the younger players were under-8 and with their evident skill and determination we can only look forward to what is in store for the hurling future of Fethard. They were not winners on the day but certainly gave all they had to give and did not let up until the final whistle.

Congratulations to the minor football team on winning the South Final against Ballyporeen on Friday evening of last week. Well done lads and best of luck in the County. Go on Fethard!

Congratulations also to Frankie O'Donovan, The Valley, and Brian Healy, The Green, who both won ‘Player of the Year’ awards with Clerihan Schoolboys Soccer Club for the year 2006/2007. Frankie at under-13’s and Brian at under-11’s. Well done lads, this is a great achievement.
