Fethard Intermediate Hurlers had a good win over Kilsheelan/Kilcash in the South Semifinal played at Monroe this evening, Saturday 27th September. Final score was Fethard 1-13, Kilsheelan/Kilcash 1-11.

CAHILL RELATIVES VISIT FETHARD

Relatives of the late Eileen Cahill, Coolmoyne, are photographed above while visiting Fethard last week. L to R: John Myers and his wife Tracey (Cahill) Myers, Joe (junior) Cahill and his son Michael Cahill. Joe’s father was Joseph A. Cahill and his grandfather was Michael Cahill who emigrated from Fethard to Troy, New York in 1866. Michael Cahill was the older brother of Laurence Cahill who was Eileen and Tom Cahill’s father from Coolmoyne.
On their visit, they brought with them a very interesting diary belonging to Joseph A. Cahill, which describes his visit to Fethard c.1918-1919 while serving in the US Navy.

DIED TODAY
We record the death of Jimmy Hayes, Lower Main Street, Fethard, who died on Wednesday 24th September. Remains left McCarthy's Funeral Parlour, Fethard, for Holy Trinity Parish Church, Fethard, at 7pm on Thursday. Burial took place at Calvary Cemetery following Requiem Mass at 11am on Friday.

Best of luck to local journalist Conor Kane who has started as journalist with The Nationalist on Monday last. Conor is the son of Danny and Rita Kane, Kerry Street, Fethard.

CIRCUS COMING TO TOWN
A Duffys Circus is to make a two-day visit to Fethard on Wednesday 1st and Thursday 2nd October. The circus is under the direction of Tom Duffy, proud bearer of a name linked with circus entertainment in Ireland for well over a century. Time was when two Duffys Circuses toured Ireland. One was owned by the Duffy family whose winter headquarters was in Dunmanway, Co. Cork, where the legendary king of the circus world of his era, the great John Duffy is buried. Incidentally his tombstone shows the carved figure of a circus caravan pulled by two horses and inscribed, “The last Milestone Passed”.
The Dunmanway Duffys Circus has long since ceased to exist and it must be over 40 years since it last toured Ireland. Three Fethard men, James O’Shea, his late brother Paud, and Billy Mackey, toured with the circus for many years as members of the circus band.
The current Duffys Circus was owned by the present Tom Duffy’s grandfather. We remember the circus with Tom Duffy’s father, also Tommy Duffy appearing with his six brothers way back in the forties in Fethard. They were a rather small outfit at the time and pitched their tent in Harrington’s field, just where Jesuits Walk joins the Clonmel Road. They also performed in Harrington’s field on the opposite side of the road. During those war time years we recall the circus performing under the light from kerosene lamps.
Following his father’s death, Tommy Duffy ran the circus for years. he now appears to have handed over the reins to his son Tom. Like all good circuses, this Duffys Circus has grown bigger and better each year. The old circus of the forties is but a pale shadow of the present day outfit. The huge big top is luxuriously furnished and also features a live circus band.
Tom Duffy has joined in recent years with the world wide famous English circus family, Chipperfields, who specialise in exotic animal acts. This enables him to present a top class show. The tradition of the oldest known form of entertainment lives on!
Here’s hoping, from a confirmed circus fan, that the people of Fethard will turn out, especially children, and children at heart of all ages, and support it. With the support forthcoming, we then may not have to wait another 15 years for a return visit!

JUVENILE GAA CLUB
Our under/10 footballers travelled to Clonmel Commercial on Saturday last to participate in their annual Football Blitz and came away with the Trophy. Moyle Rovers, Kilsheelan, Commercials and Fethard were the teams participating. We had convincing wins over both Moyle Rovers and Kilsheelan. With a place secured in the finals for Fethard, we then went on to play Commercials who needed a win to secure a place in the final. Commercials came out with great determination and earned their place with a great win over Fethard.
The final match was a real thriller for both players and spectators, Fethard came out strong and scored a goal in the opening minutes to set the pace. The lads then went out and scored two more points, with Commercials replying with a goal, the atmosphere was electric and the lads played their socks off. Commercials came back with another point and with one point in it, it seemed as if the final whistle would never be blown. Commercials determination made hard work for the Fethard defence and they were kept busy until the final whistle finally blew. It was a great win for Fethard and an overall win for the lads. Well done to them. It was a great days football and many thanks to Commercial for the invitation and their hospitality.
Under/10 football training continues on Saturdays at 3pm in the GAA field - all players are asked to attend.

FETHARD’S LONG TIME EMIGRANT
The death has occurred in England of Mrs Josie Skillen, formerly Josie Grant of The Valley, Fethard. Interment took place in England.

On Sunday 21st September in Clonmel our Senior Footballers earned the right to do it all over again in the county championship semifinal when the game ended level on a scoreline, Fethard 1-11, Cahir 1-11. The team was: Paul Fitzgerald, Damien Byrne, Michael Aherne, Stephen O’Donnell, Tomas Keane, Michael Quinlan, Cian Maher, Aiden Fitzgerald 0-1, P J Aherne 0-2, Michael Dillon 1-1, Willie Morrissey, John P Looby, Miceál Spillane, Brian Coen 0-5F, Jimmy O’Meara 0-1. Subs used were: Glen Burke 0-1, Tomas Anglim, and Conor McCarthy.
Intermediate Hurling is now down to South semifinal stage and on this Saturday 27th September, we play Kilsheelan in Monroe.
Junior A Football is also at South semifinal stage where we understand our opponents are St Patricks, at a time and venue to be arranged.
Our Lotto Jackpot of €1000 was not won. The numbers drawn in The Castle were 10, 18, 21 and 22. We had one match three winner of €150 who was Francis Dillon (Tullamaine). Our €50 Lucky Dip went to John Walsh (Curraghtarsna).

MASS FOR FR TWOMEY OSA
The month’s mind Mass for the late Fr. Twomey OSA will be celebrated in the Augustinian Abbey at 10.30am on Monday 29th September.

FETHARD YOUTH CLUB
Fethard Youth Club will hold its AGM on Wednesday 24 September in the Fethard Arms at 7.30 pm. The Club will reopen to members old and new on Saturday 27th. Please remember that due to the small number of club leaders membership will be on a first come, first served basis this year. Hoping to see you all back as usual.

DANCER REMEMBERED
Fethard Ballroom dancer, the late Babe Maher who with her husband Bill were oft times winner of local ballroom dancing competitions, will be remembered in Cahir on Sunday next. The Babe Maher Memorial Dancing Championships will be held in Cahir House Hotel on Sunday next 28th September from 1pm to 6pm. The afternoon’s entertainment is not only for competitors, there will be dancing for everyone and families are especially welcome. Admission for spectators is €6.

WEDDING WEEK
In the week ending Saturday 20th September, we had three parish weddings and may we take this opportunity to congratulate the three happy couples and wish them the best of luck.
On Thursday 18th September, the wedding took place in Fethard Parish Church of Catriona, daughter of Mr Seamus and Mrs Margaret Hackett, Strylea, to Mr Terry Boland, Drangan.
The wedding took place in Fethard Parish Church on Saturday 20th September of Helen, daughter of Mr Tony and Mrs Joan McGarry, Woodvale Walk, Fethard, to Tommy, son of Mr James and Mrs Patricia O’Brien, St. Patrick’s Place, Fethard.
The wedding took place in Killusty Church on Saturday 20th September of Avril, daughter of Mrs Peggy and the late Mr Pat Colville, Spitalfield, Fethard, to Adrian, son of Mr John and Mrs Margaret Morrissey, Tullow, Killusty.
