COMMUNITY GAMES
Congratulations to everybody from Fethard/Killusty area who took part in the County Athletics Finals at Thurles Dog Track on Sunday, especially to Michael Costello, Woodvale Walk, who won the 100 meters under-12, and to Kate Quigley, Redcity who qualified for the semi-final in under-8 80 meters. Fethard Athletic Club had a great day as Killenaule representatives Róisin Trehy and Michelle Ryall both won gold for their parish. The under/12 boys relay team won silver, Eoin Quigley won silver, and Kevin Quigley and Hannah Trehy won bronze. Shane Gorey won gold for Drangan and Darragh Dwyer won silver for Powerstown. All of these children are members of Fethard Athletic Club. We wish all winners the best of luck in Mosney.
NATIONAL TRIATHLON
Tim O’Hagan, son of Michael and Josephine O’Hagan, Tipperary Tack Shop, Fethard, was a member of the Tipperary Pony Club boys under-12 team who won the National Minimus Triathlon 2003, hosted by Killinick Pony Club in Wexford. The members of the Tipp team were, Oisín McQuinn, David Hannigan, Craig O’Connor and Tim O’Hagan. The events consisted of swimming, running and a cross-country riding test with over 250 competitors taking part.
FISHING NEWS
The Fethard & Killusty Anglers promote their second round of competitive fishing on Sunday next 29th June. The Eddie O’Neill and Jack O’Donnell Trophy competitions will be run off on Sunday. Competing anglers are asked to assemble at Thorny Bridge at 11am.

TOWN HALL
Members of the Fethard & Killusty Community Council met with Cllr John Fahey, South Tipperary County Council officials Michael Fitzgerald and John Moloney, along with Conservation Officer Stephen Fallon, on Wednesday 25th June, at 3pm in Fethard, to discuss the future use and renovations needed for the historic building. It is hoped that a suitable project can be drawn up that will bring the building back into community use, make it viable, and also attract EU funding for the conservation of the building.
SPECIAL OLYMPIC ATHLETES
Well done to all who helped Fethard sponsor three athletes for the Special Olympics. Nano Nagle Primary School, Fethard Ballroom and Fethard and Killusty Community Council raised the money needed to sponsor the three athletes. The Abymill Theatre also ran a Bingo Night and donated the proceeds in aid of the local fund.
BALLINGARRY MINES
A meeting is being organised in Ballingarry to investigate the source of EU relief funding for ex Ballingarry minors and their widows. Fethard provided a lot of the workforce for Ballingarry Mines during its peak time. The minors will be honoured by the erection of a plaque in Ballingarry village and the publication of a book on the history of the mines.

RONANS SET PACKAGE DEADLINE (The Nationalist)
Ronans have set a deadline of next Monday for protesting workers at their Clonmel tannery plant for acceptance of a €2.2m redundancy package. Each of the fifty-six workers engaged in the thirteen weeklong sit in have been written to by the Ronans and given details of a "final and enhanced redundancy offer".
Workers have been given a 5pm deadline on Monday for acceptance of the offer. "Thereafter statutory redundancy only will be paid" workers have been told. The redundancy package offers payments to workers ranging from €6,086 to €52,687. Thirty two of the protesting workers would get paid over €25,000 if the offer was accepted.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Ronans said the on-going "illegal and unofficial sit-in" at the company's premises was delaying any possibility of the plant being able to re-open in the near future.
"As a last effort to obtain a negotiated settlement, John Ronan & Sons has written to each ATGWU members involved in the illegal occupation of the company's premises and unofficial action, setting out their final position on an enhanced redundancy package for those who wish to avail of it." said the Ronans statement.
The offer has been slammed as an "insult to men who had given loyal service to Ronans" by shop steward Billy Shoer. "This offer is statutory redundancy, one bonus week and the sum of €212,000 divided between fifty-six workers. It is an absolute insult. It is not acceptable," said Billy Shoer, one of the sit in workers who took their campaign caravan to the streets again last Friday after talks in Carlow between the ATGWU and a former IBEC official failed to resolve the dispute.
PROTEST ON FETHARD MAIN STREET
Fethard would not normally be associated with official protests. The scene was changed somewhat on Sunday morning last when employees of Ronan’s Dudley’s Mills, Clonmel, mounted their placard carrying protest on Main Street, Fethard. The workers are protesting at the closure of the Clonmel Tannery and the resulting loss of their jobs without proper negotiation for redundancy.
The last occasion we can recall a placard carrying protest being mounted on Main Street, Fethard, was around 1937. A well-known local personality of the time, Pierre Foster, was dismissed from the gang digging the trench for the installation of the town’s water supply. The following morning, Pierre appeared on the job carrying a placard, which read, “Discrimination, victimised by ganger Harrington!” We understand his protest was successful and he was shortly afterwards re-established at his job.
FETHARD GAA CLUB

Junior A Football commenced on Friday 20th June in Kilsheelan where we had a win over Commercials on a scoreline, Fethard 1-13 (0-8), Clonmel Commercials 0-8 (0-3). The team was: Tommy Gahan, Martin Ryan Diarmuid, Burke, Philly Croke, Ian Kenrick, Michael Carroll, Jamie McCormack, Alan Phelan 0-1, Kevin O’Donnell 0-1, Brendan Brett 0-3 (1f), Shay Ryan, Jason Nevin 0-4, Johnny Neville 1-3, John Hurley and John Noonan 0-1. Our next game is against Newcastle.
We lost our first game in Intermediate Hurling on Sunday 22nd June on a scoreline, Fethard 2-11 (0-6), Ballybacon Grange 2-16 (2-10). The team was: Paul Fitzgerald, Shay Ryan, Michael Carroll, Philly Croke, Tomas Keane, Michael Ahearne, Ian Kenrick, Cian Maher, Ian Kenrick, Brian Coen, Aiden Fitzgerald 0-3, John P. Looby 0-2, Colin Allen 1-5 (frees), Miceál Spillane and Jamie McCormack 1-1. Subs used were: Kevin O’Donnell, Owen Doyle and Michael Costello. On Tuesday 24th June we played Aherlow in the County League. Match report next week.
In senior football we play Ardfinnan in the South Championship on Saturday 28th June in Clonmel at 8pm.
The Junior B Football Championship commences on Tuesday next in Cloneen against Mullinahone at 8pm.
Our Juveniles under-12 hurling team play in Fethard on Thursday 26th June.
The Lotto Jackpot of €1,500 was not won. The draw took place in Burke’s Pub. We had five ‘match threes’ who received €30 each: Tom Purcell (Burke St), Patrick Gleeson (10 Cathal Brutha St. Cashel), Thomas Barrett (The Green), Philly Kenny (The Green), and Brian Walsh (Baptistgrange), The €50 Lucky Dip winner was Bee Gould (Claremore).

COMMUNITY WALK & FUN SPORTS
There are some very exciting plans for the development of the new Fethard Community Sportsfield. These plans include a six-lane athletic track, arena for long jump, high jump, shot putt and discus. The playing pitch will cater for rugby, soccer, community games and GAA, including camogie and ladies football. Provision has also been made for an ‘Astro Turf Pitch’, which is very much in demand as an all-round playing surface.
Fethard & Killusty Community Games used the field for their local athletics and Fethard Athletic Club recently held a very successful open sports evening. Coolmore Stud also availed of the pitch for their sports day. Tag Rugby is presently being coached on Thursday evenings.
The ‘Community Walk & Sports Evening’ in aid of the field will take place on this coming Friday, June 27th. The walk will commence from The Square, Fethard, at 6.30pm and will finish in the Community Field. A fun sports evening will follow immediately. Programme will include sack races for all ages, mixed relays, penalty kick and sponge throwing. One of the main events will be the pub relay race. This is an open evening and we are hoping for a good turn out.
The collection points for sponsorship cards are: Newports Newsagents; Ger Manton WashCo, The Square; and McManus Grocery Burke Street. Please hand in your sponsorship cards during the week and come out and support the event on Friday next. County Tipperary goalkeepers, Paul Fitzgerald and Philly Ryan have agreed to stand in goal for the penalty kick competition. It does not matter where you live – you are welcome to come along and join in the fun.
ACCOMMODATION REQUIRED FOR FLEADH CHEOIL
The Fleadh Cheoil Committee are under severe pressure to provide accommodation for the large number of people who plan to descend on Clonmel in late August. They are appealing for anybody within a 20-mile radius of the town who might be willing to take in people on a B&B basis or to rent out their house for a week, to please contact Maureen or Kathleen at 052 24960 as soon as possible. There is a special appeal to anybody who accommodated guests for the Fethard Culchie Festival to contact the office.
FETHARD JUVENILE GAA
Fethard under-12 hurlers travelled to Clonmel Og on Monday last and came away with a convincing win in the second match of their championship bid. There were outstanding performances from every member of the team and the final score stood at 2-10 to 1-00 with Tommy Sheehan, Kieran Ryan and Eoin O'Connell supplying the scores.
Fethard play host to Ballybacon on Monday and are also at home this Thursday in the GAA field at 7pm to Killenaule. We wish them the best of luck in the next rounds of their championship.
It is also that time of year again folks for the annual GAA Camp which takes place in the GAA field from Monday 30th June to Friday 4th July (inclusive). The starting time is 10am and finishing at 1pm everyday. The cost of this years camp is €15 per child and €35 for a family of 3 or more. The age group for this camp is 7 - 14 years. FETHARD ATHLETIC CLUB
The community games county athletics finals took place last weekend in Thurles. The club was represented by competitors from four parishes, Fethard/Killusty, Killenaule / Moyglass, Powerstown / Lisronagh and Drangan / Cloneen. County champions and winners of the coveted trip to the national finals at Mosney were: Roisín Trehy in the under-10 60m hurdles; Michelle Ryall under-12 100m; Michael Costello under-12 100m and Shane Gorey under-14 800m. Kevin Quigley and Conor Prendergast were also members of the winning Killenaule / Moyglass under-12, 4x100m relay team.
Other medal winners on the day were Elaine Kennedy 2nd in the under-14 800m; Eoin Quigley 2nd in the under-8 80m; Hannah Trehy 3rd in the under-12 600m and Kevin Quigley 3rd in the under-12 600m. Relay silver medal winners were the Fethard boys under-12 team of John Lalor, Jerome Ahearn, Adam Lyons, Damien Morrissey and Michael Costello; the Moyglass girls under-12 team of Michelle Ryall, Aisling O’Connor, Hannah Trehy, Cliodhna O’Dwyer; and the Killenaule / Moyglass girls under-14 team of Elaine Kennedy, Aoife O’Gorman, Rebecca Ryan and Jennifer O’Donnell. Well done to all who competed and best of luck to the six club members who travel to Mosney for the national finals in August.
Juvenile training has now been discontinued for the summer and will restart in September for the cross-country season.
CHILDCARE COMMITTEE
Sheila Comerford from South Tipperary County Childcare Committee attended the last meeting of Fethard and Killusty Community Council, along with members of the Community Playgroup Committee, and spoke on the possibility of including an all-day childcare facility in the future development of the Convent Hall in Fethard. Sheila had previously viewed the building with committee members and was very impressed with the potential and layout of the building. She also stated that it was a great advantage for the group to have and own their own building when applying for funding.
The committee have also had visitors from Tipperary Leader and Tipperary Institute, to view the building. The committee have now applied to undertake a feasibility study that will help determine the best sustainable solution for the development of the premises while also serving community needs.
RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION
Fethard & Killusty Community Council is an umbrella for other committees formed within the town of Fethard and to date have been quite successful in helping and guiding those groups.
It is our experience that the most effective way of improving the quality of areas around the town is when each area form its own Residents Association. By doing so we can work effectively with those groups, deal with various problems and issues arising for people living in the town.
For those living in newer developments in Fethard and not feeling adequately represented by the Community Council, we would recommend that your area form a Residents Association. If you are interested and willing to participate in such a group please contact the Tirry Centre Information Office, Tel: 052 31000, and we will organise a preliminary meeting.
SYMPATHY
Sincere sympathy is extended to Mr Pat O’Brien, The Valley, on the death of his brother Tom, Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, England, and formerly of Ballinard, Fethard.
Many will still recall the era of some 60 years ago when open and championship sports events were very much part of the Irish summer sporting scene. The late Tom O’Brien was one of Tipperary’s best track cyclists of the period and won many track races, from half to three miles, at Tipperary and adjoining counties sport meetings.
Interment took place in Leamington.
FETHARD HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Fethard Historical Society’s June tour remained very close to home and proved one of the society’s most interesting. A party of 25 members paid a visit to Coolmore Stud. Though on our door step, many were completely unaware of the vastness of the Coolmore operation and the management it takes to keep it running like clockwork. Coolmore, as well as its Irish interests, has stud farms in Australia, America and New Zealand.
The detailed attention from Mr John Magnier and his assistants, and their knowledge of the blood-stock breeding industry, down to the work carried out to make Coolmore a wonderful showpiece for Ireland, worldwide, proves that Coolmore did not earn the title ‘Home of Champions’ by just fortune and good luck. The Coolmore enterprise is a typical example of, “the harder you work, the luckier you get”.
Mr Tim Corballis proved a most informative and interesting guide. He reeled off pedigrees, performances of stallions, and also the performances of their many offspring, without consulting a note. Tim also showed great patience in answering the many questions from the visitors whose knowledge of a horse was that, one ends kicks and the other end bites.
He completed his talk with a most interesting history of Coolmore House, dating from the 17th century, when it was owned by the Everard family, down the centuries through the Jacobs, Sankeys, Murphys, Major Vigors, to the present owner, the Magnier family.
As an appreciation of his detailed and most informative talk, Ms Mary Hanrahan, secretary of Fethard Historical Society, presented Mr Corballis with a framed picture, of the now worldwide acclaimed by those with Fethard connections, ‘First Millennium Sunrise over Slievenamon’, photographed by Joe Kenny.
VISITORS
Two members of an American tourist party, touring the walled towns of Ireland, were more than interested in their Fethard stopover. They were descendants of a Sayers (Fethard) and Baker (Cashel) marriage of 1803. The Sayers family in question, owned property extending from the Post Office to Mrs Ahearns. Members of the family were very prominent in the legal profession, Mr Hugh Tom Sayers being one of Ireland’s best known solicitors of his time. The visitors were able to visit a Sayers/Baker tomb in the burial grounds of Holy Trinity Church of Ireland in Fethard.
The intend making further contact soon, as their visit this time was very brief, being confined to a very tight schedule.
PRESIDENT SENDS GOOD WISHES
John and Anna Lucey, The Square, have been honoured by receiving a card of congratulations, on the occasion of their Diamond Wedding Anniversary, from Her Excellency, Ms Mary McAleese, President of Ireland.

The wedding took place at Grangemockler Parish Church on Saturday 14th June, of Richard Cummins, son of the late Dick and Anna Cummins, Monroe, to Ms Kay Walsh, Grangemockler.
FETHARD SPORTS EVENING
The clubs annual sports evening took place last Wednesday 11th June in the new community sports field. Support for the event went well above expectations and with almost 200 children taking part the standard of racing was excellent. The club wishes to thank all those local people who supported this meet as well as our friends from Clonmel Coolquill and Ballynonty Athletic clubs.

MUNSTER CHAMPIONSHIPS
Four juvenile Fethard athletes Michelle Ryall, Hannah Trehy, Darragh Dwyer, John Lalor travelled to Castleisland to represent their club in the Munster track & field championships on Sat and Sun 14th & 15th June. Our top performer on the day was once again Michelle Ryall who finished 4th in the final of the girls U12 long jump. This result entitles Michelle to represent her club at the national track & field championships.
Thurles 5k:
Pat Heffernan was Fethard’s and indeed Tipperary’s top athlete in what turned out to be a quality field in this annual road race. Pat finished 2nd in a time of 16min 02secs. Our next athlete was Fintan Rice who finished 10th with a time of 16min 55secs. The next county board race is the “Walls of Fethard” four miler which takes place on Thurs. night 26th June at 8p.m.The race is a four lap circuit around Fethard town, starting in Main street running anti clockwise the athletes will cross the bridge and turn into the valley left over Watergate and right into Burke street, left up the green and turn at Kenny’s into Barrack Street and back to Main street. We appeal to motorists passing through the town on the night in question to do so with extreme caution giving right of way to the participating athletes.

The community sponsored walk in aid of the new sports field will take place on Friday evening the 27th June .This worthy project will benefit all sports organisations in the area. The entire community young and old can avail of this new facility so we appeal to the people of Fethard and its surrounding area to be as generous as possible in supporting this parish fund raising effort.
COOLMORE FAMILY DAY
Coolmore Stud Farm held their annual 'Family Day' on Saturday 14th June. The day was blessed with beautiful weather and the entertainment provided for the adults and children was second to none.
