GOLF CLASSIC FOR DAY CARE CENTRE
A Golf Classic in aid of the new extension to Fethard and District Day Care Centre will be held in Slievenamon Golf Club weekending 30th and 31st August. The committee ask for your support by sponsorship of one of the following: Team of 4 sponsorship €100, Green Sponsorship €50 and Tee sponsorship €25. Local golfers interested in helping out are asked to contact any member of Fethard & Killusty Community Council or Brendan Kenny at Slievenamon Golf Club, Tel (052) 32213.

COMMUNITY COUNCIL NEWS
The Community Council are now well advanced in their building of an extension to Fethard and District Day Care Centre. Plans to fit out the new downstairs Community Office and kitchen for Meals and Wheels are now underway.
The Town Wall Lights are currently being replaced and fitted with protective grills. We expect them to be connected and turned on when this work is completed.
Representatives from Christmas Light suppliers were currently in Fethard to give an estimate for adding extra lights for this years festive season. For environmental reasons, we are also planning to plant a permanent Christmas Tree in the Square. The practicalities of this are currently being discussed with South Tipperary County Council engineer, Jonathan Cooney.
The Pound gate by the Town Wall has been locked as it was becoming unsightly with litter collecting inside the walls. We would like to thank the local County Council for organising this and supplying keys to the Fethard Historical Society and Community Council. If anyone needs to visit The Pound, a key will be available from the above.
Representatives of the Community Council recently met with the South Tipperary County Council Planning Officer, Pat Slattery, and Housing Engineer, John Moloney, to discuss the provision of a community playing field in Fethard. The results were very positive and it was decided to have a follow up meeting will take place after we make a formal plan of where facilities, walkways and housing plans for the future should be implemented in the Fethard Development Draft Plan due to be published next year. The next Fethard Development Plan will be completed in 2004 and apply to the following five years. The proposed community field would service athletics, rugby, soccer and training for other sports. The Community Council will contact local organisations in the near future to collect their ideas before the next meeting with the County Council officials.
The committee would like to thank all who support our Community Lotto every week. Recent contributions were made towards the annual insurance costs for Woodvale Walk Residents Association and the purchase of the Convent hall for community use. The Convent Hall was purchased at a total cost of €69,800 (£55,000). We are happy to say that, due to the Community Lotto, the balance owed is now down to €12,000.
New members are always welcome to join the Community Council. Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday 13th August.

FETHARD & KILLUSTY COMMUNITY LOTTO

FETHARD GAA NOTES
In the County Senior Football League on Tuesday 16th July, we played Aherlow in Fethard and are still unbeaten on a scoreline Fethard 2-10 (1-2), Aherlow 0-11 (0-8). The team was: Paul Fitzgerald, Jimmy O’Meara, Michael Ahearne, Willie O’Meara, Alan Phelan, Michael Quinlan, Stephen O’Donnell 0-1, Kenneth Byrne, Aiden Fitzgerald 0-1, J P Looby 1-0, Glen Burke 1-1, Michael Dillon 0-1, Carl Maher 0-2, Martin Coen 0-3, and Brian Coen. Subs used were: Tom Anglim, Martin Ryan, Owen Doyle, Kevin O’Donnell and Nicky Murphy.
On Wed 17th July we played St Martins in Junior B football in Cloneen. The final score was Fethard 1-5 (1-5), St Martins 3-12 (0-5). The team was: Ronan Maher, Kenneth Sheehan, Peter Nolan, Diarmuid Burke, Emmet Burke 0-1, Jamie McCormack, Michael Costello, John Hanrahan, Garreth Byrne, John Noonan 0-2f, Colm Coen 1-0, Aiden Phelan, David Flanagan 0-1, John Fitzgerald 0-1f and M. J. Croke. Subs used were: Alan O’Meara, Paddy Cooney, Gerry Murphy, Jonathan Spillane and Owen Whyte.
Lotto jackpot €4,600 was not won. We had three match threes who won €50 each: Tadhg Lonergan (c/o The Pub, The Square), Noreen Morrissey (28 St Patrick’s Place), Tony Maher (56 Woodvale Walk). The winner of the €50 Lucky Dip was Paula Gahan (Cedar Wood Grove).

EAMON'S SURPRISE BIRTHDAY PARTY

"Greetings from New York. We just returned from a great visit to Fethard & Killenaule. We had a great night at Eamon's Surprise 50th Birthday party held on July 3rd at the Slievenamon Golf Club. What a lovely place to have a party. We had all the family home this time and the three girls enjoyed getting together with their aunts and cousins. There were over 85 people there. His aunt Eileen came from Cavan with his cousin Helen. His cousin, Penny Matrin from Wexford, his friends Mike & Mary Griffin travelled from Galway and his Brother John and friends from Cork. Family and friends from Fethard, Moyglass, Clonmel, Killenaule were well represented by the Murphy family in-laws. Richie Cummins organised the DJ and was a big help in the organising of the surprise party.
Our daughter Caroline spend 2 weeks at the American College Dublin and 2 weeks in Italy this summer . She has lots of memories of her stay in Ireland. Thanks again and keep up the good work, Bernie."

SINEAD'S KILLER CHARGED

Sinead Healy (26) and her killer, Kenneth Lynch (33).

Kenneth Lynch, who murdered his girlfriend, pretty Sinead Healy formerly from Fethard, after a furious row at her London home was jailed for life on Wednesday 17th July. Lynch attacked Sinead on October 18, 2000. At the time of the killing he was on a four-day period of home leave from Springhill Prison in England where he was serving a sentence for handling stolen computers.

STEVIE'S TRIP ON HORSEBACK

Steven O'Connor, formerly from Kiltinan, set off from Andalucia in southern Spain, in the middle of May, 2002, on a marathon solo, horse-back ride. His intent is to travel through Spain, Portugal and France to England and Wales and finally, if all goes well, back to Ireland in September. THE CARNIVAL IS OVER
A cutting from a mid-July Nationalist of 1943 will remind many of free-travel age, of the glories of the widely known and supported Annual Fethard Carnival of that era. Definitely Fethard’s biggest day of the year in these modern times, it is almost impossible to recall the significance. The Carnival provided a programme of events which in reality, could each provide an afternoons entertainment on their own. The Fancy Dress Parade was recognised as one of the best in Ireland. A gymkhana, seven-a-side football tournament, sporting programme of cycling and athletics, a complete Irish dancing competition, choir and solo singing competitions, a dance platform, and a very wide selection of stalls, mineral bar, catering marquee, gives some idea of the attractions available. There were also 2 classes, one for 12 to 14 hands, and one for over 14 hands, for the best turned out pony and trap. In addition, there was always a top class band in attendance on the day and a special train from Waterford, travelling via Carrick and Clonmel, usually brought 400-600 passengers to Fethard for the Carnival.
Amongst the prizewinners in the various events were: Paddy and Michael Stokes, P.J. Holohan and Dick McCarthy in the gymkhana; Marie McCarthy as ‘Spotted’, Eva and Mossie McCarthy, Declan Mulligan, Johnny Leahy, Mamie Matthews, Goldie Newport, Mary Lynch, Peg and Barney O’Byrne in the Fancy Dress Parade. Goldie Newport also won the individual singing competition and choirs from Presentation Convent Fethard, Drangan and Clonmel were winners in the choir singing competition. Winner of the 100 yards under/15 sprint was Jackie O’Gorman, Clonmel, who incidentally, went on in later years to win a national titles in the N.A.C.A. sprint and long jump. Tommy Conway, Coleman, was 2nd and Sean Hogan won the 100 yards confined to Fethard parish race.
Many will be surprised to learn that Fethard had some top class track cyclists competing at that time. John O’Donovan won the 2 mile race and Jack ‘Lovely Johnny’ Power was second in the mile race. Other well-known Fethard cyclists of the time were Tom Fogarty and Tom O’Brien, Ballinard, — probably the best know of the bunch.
Belated birthday greetings to Tom O’Brien, who quiet recently celebrated his 90th birthday in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, England. We are glad to report that he is in excellent form. John O’Donovan told us he bought a top range racing bike, second-hand at that time for £12. All top-class riders in Carrick and Clonmel now ride bikes which cost over £1,200, and that's not even converted to Euro. How times have changed!
Mrs La Terrier, with her great trotting pony, ‘Brilliant’, won the best turned out pony and trap event. Mullinahone won the seven-a-side football and their team would have included such players as Waltie Scott, Mick O’Sullivan, Mick Quirke, Paddy Dreen and perhaps some very young Cahill brothers.
Possible the following story indicates what became of the famous Fethard Carnivals. As the Fancy Dress Parade was passing by Main Street, a young boy walking on the pavement was asked, “Are you not going to watch the parade?” His reply was, “I am I'm sure, I'm going home to watch a video!”
This change of attitude amongst our young people sums up the demise of the times and joys that are yore. Once again we quote the mantra of Dick ‘Gurdy’ Cummins from The Valley, “Times change, they certainly do!”

FETHARD COMMUNITY AWARENESS GROUP
The second meeting of the newly formed Fethard Awareness Group took place on Monday night 15th July, attended by over 30 members of the community. The group was formed to take action against the recent spate of vandalism in the town.

FLOWERS IN BLOOM

The flowers beds on The Square (photographed Wednesday 17th July) are now in full bloom and great credit is due to the local County Council workers who spent many days planting and tending to the flower beds.

Thanks also is due to Council Supervisor, Tomás Fitzgerald for organising the erection of the remaining Fethard Medieval Trail finger-signs at Watergate and Main Street.

THE WELL GOLF SOCIETY
The Well Golf Society have organised an outing for Tipperary Golf Club on Sunday 21st July. Tee-off time is 11am.
