€40,000 for Riverwalk
Fethard and Killusty Council have recently been allocated €40,000 from South Tipperary County Council. This money is made available through the Council’s Recreation and Community Facilities and Amenities Scheme 2005. It is to be used to upgrade and extend the River Walk. The committee and members of the Community Council would like to acknowledge the support of local representative Cllr. John Fahey, Cllr. Michael O’Brien, Cllr. Susan Meagher and Cllr. Denis Landy and Deputy Seamus Healy TD.

Other projects allocated money under the same fund include:
Moyglass Community Development (€40,000); Ballingarry GAA (€20,000); Scoil Ruain Killenaule (€40,000); St. Mary’s Community Centre, Killenaule (€22,957); Grangemockler Community Sportsfield (€40,000); Millennium Family Resource Centre (€40,000); Glengoole Community Dev. Cane gone Walkies!
A lady residing in Main Street left her walking cane outside her hall door recently. The cane had disappeared when she realised her mistake. This distinctive folding cane which was purchased at Knock is of great sentimental value and also in regular practical use. She is most anxious to discover its whereabouts. Any information or the cane may be left in at Newports Newsagents.

Tall Ships 2005
A large number travelled from Fethard to Waterford to view the Tall Ships which were docked in the city for three days prior to starting the first leg of the Tall Ships race to France. Many saw, for the first time, what would have been a common sight in the same harbour a century ago. Over two thousand crew members of all nationalities mingled with thousands of spectators to create a truly cosmopolitan atmosphere along the banks of the river Suir. Three Irish vessels, the Dunbrody, the Jeanie Johnson and the Asgard II were among a large fleet that gathered from countries as far afield as Oman, Indonesia, India, Russia, the USA and Uruguay.

Many of the boats were open to the public for a number of hours and large numbers got a chance to enjoy tours of the magnificent vessels. The biggest ship of the lot was a Russian vessel which was receiving a lot of attention as our party passed by . . . though the boat itself wasn’t the focal point of interest. The young men guarding the gangway to the ship cut a dash in their dark uniforms and wide topped sailors hats. As we watched, a feisty looking young woman marched a line of young-wans across the docks. They were dressed to impress. The fourteen lads working high up on the mast left out a cheer as the girls approached the ship. They were impressed. The girls were made most welcome. The party was about to begin. Elsewhere, people were getting a chance to see the ships from different perspectives.

Ten euro bought a trip up the river between the boats. For forty-five you could view the whole spectacle from the air as a fleet of helicopters ferried spectators over the city for the day. Others were cashing in on the sidewalks. Buskers and Bands entertained while hawkers sold their beads, badges and burgers. Overall, the atmosphere was friendly and relaxed. It was an amazing spectacle, which hopefully we will see in Waterford again.

Fethard Historical Society
Society member and local Tourist Guide, Colm McGrath, led (and drove the bus as well) a very enjoyable outing to Kilree and Kells in nearby Co. Kilkenny on the evening of Friday, 1st July.  Kells Priory is very impressive indeed, and Kilree monastic site with Round Tower and High Cross is a charming place to visit .The advantage of going by coach was that the group were able to stop for pre-arranged refreshments in Callan without worrying about  'the legal limit'!

The Historical Society is also getting involved in the Fethard Flower Festival on Sunday 24th by co-ordinating a local crafts area in the grounds of old Holy Trinity Church and by also providing guides for a tour of the Medieval Town. Malicious Fires
A Fire Brigade had to be called in the early hours of Monday morning to quench a series of fires that were started maliciously. A resident of the Valley spotted a group of youths setting fire to four round bales of hay in the paddock between the Town Wall and the Clashawley. Attempts were made to quench the fires, but the fire brigade had to be called when the smouldering bales ignited, as one of the bales was close to a fence that passes directly under an ESB transformer that supplies power to half of the town.

This is the second time in a week that youths have burned bales in fields surrounding the town. Any information regarding the vandals that started these fires would be appreciated. The residents of Fethard are getting tired of these youths who destroy parts of the town with graffiti, break windows and now set fire to private property. Contact local Gardai with any information.

Top Golfers in Town
Two of the worlds top golfers paid a visit to Fethard last week. Davis Love III and Fred Couples were in Ireland to play in the JP McManus Pro Am Tournament. The day after the event, they flew into town to visit Coolmore Stud. They finished their visit with a trip to McCarthy’s, savouring a pint before flying back to Limerick again.

The 2005 Killusty Pony Show was held at Claremore, Killusty, Fethard on Saturday 2nd July. The Weather Steward will be retained for at least another year as, after a truly appalling weather forecast, he managed to keep the rain away all day so that the Show could go on in unexpected and welcome comfort. In the led Ring the A.I.B. Slievenamon Championship and Best Filly prize went to Joe Whelton’s Golden Grove Skylark bred by a long term stalwart of Killusty Show Sean Maher now sadly gone to his reward. Peter Byrne’s Wyndham Aristocrat filled the Reserve spot. Peter Byrne too has been a great supporter over the years and thankfully he is still with us. The Cup for the best local was taken home by Noel Coffey for his Ballintemple Star, second in the hunter pony young stock. Peter Byrne claimed the Dawn Fresh Foods Championship in the broodmare ring with Wyndham Symphony with West Cork’s Martin O’Sullivan’s Little Blue in reserve. Martin McMahon too came from Cork to claim the Welsh Championship with Muskerry Charisma with Ann Grime’s Windsong Remember Me in reserve. The Butler Connemara Championship went to Dublin with Patrick Geoghegan’s Dangan Patricka topping the list with Joanne O’Connor’s Greyrock Finisterre in reserve. She only had to come down the road from Ballinard.

Numbers were again down in the Show Pony Classes but the Coolmore Killusty Championship was claimed again for Cork by Regina Daly’s Fofsway Symbolene with Ann Grimes Rollswood Joseph in Reserve. Numbers were seriously up in the equitation classes, most particularly in the Equitation Jumping classes and the Tate Croome-Carroll Memorial Equitation Championship was truly earned by Esme Mansergh-Wallace with Chloe Murphy in reserve.

In the Local Handy Pony Class Hazel Sheehan from just down the road from the showgrounds upheld the honour of Fethard and Killusty. The Special Lead Rein Class went slightly further afield , to Louanna Winters in Cahir. The Mini Classes were very well filled with, again, greater numbers in the hunter pony sections. The Mini Championship went home with Sean Scallan’s Barkway Sweet Pea to Wexford with Shane McNamara’s Balllykilty Flame in reserve. The Starter Stakes Championship headed for Kerry with Nikki Taylor’s Valmore Irish Mist coming out tops. This pony has a very local connection too as he is out of Gus Keane’s great old mare Douthwaite Martini who only left Killusty to go to Tom Relihan in Listowel when Gus went to his final home. The reserve in this championship was Patrick Geoghegan’s 'It’s a Boy Thing'.

In the Show Hunter Ring there was no shortage of numbers to select from for Dermot O’Connor. Mrs. Tara Bricknell’s Open Show Hunter Champion was Elizabeth Freeman’s Moelgarnedd Dymuniad. The lovely little Welsh mare had as her reserve Basil Brindley’s Chantilly Phantom, having another great year. The Lady Lloyd Webber’s Novice Show Hunter Champion was Lorli Higgins Ballyboy Perry Merry with Erica Leonard’s Ringwood Puzzle from Limerick in Reserve. At the end of the day the Intermediate Champion did not come form the Show hunter division but from the workers with Con Davis Captain Scarlet shading it from Catherine Rawluk’s Littlejon

Thw Working Hunter Rings were in operation from early to late. Tony Ennis’ well designed and strongly built courses tested the competitors in noo uncertain fashion. The Gain Animal Feeds Novice Working Hunter Championship went to Moelgarnedd Dymuniad who had a great day all round. The Clonmel Oil Working Hunter Championship went to Linda Young’s Ardfry Ahab with Inspector Morse in reserve. Jean Pim’s Performance Working Hunter Championship was again Ardfry Ahab with Anarette Geoghegan’s Westmir Queen in reserve. The Green Working Hunter Class attracted a massive entry and was duly won by Matthew Holohan ,the boy from down the road whose Grandfather Billy had been a founding member of Killusty Show on Boolagh Matilda. The Show started promptly at 10 a.m and all but the last equitation jumping competition was finished before 6 p.m letting most tired competitors and there ponies get home in good time.

Juvenile GAA Club News
U/6’s, U/8’s and U/10’s will play St. Patrick’s in football this weekend. The venue will be Cloneen. All players will be notified of time. U/12s did not play any game last week. Fixtures: Davins (home) Saturday 16th; Mullinahone (home) Saturday 23rd.

The U/14s had a great win last week by defeating the Carrick Swans. Kieran O’Connell scored the all important goal with two minutes to go. Fixtures: Ballylooby (away) Thursday 14th.

The first round of the U/16 hurling will be at home to St. Pats on Monday 25th. We had three players representing the club last weekend, Owen O’Connell played with South Tipp u/14 in the Peadar Cummins Cup, Aaron O’Donovan played with South Tipp in u/15 football in Cork and Chris Sheehan who played county u/16 football, Well done to all players who performed very well. The Summercamp will be held from Monday 15th to Friday 19th August in the GAA field - please return forms as soon as possible. The very best of Luck to Paul Fitzgerald, Damien Byrne, and Cian Maher in the Tommy Murphy Cup on Sat 16th July against Leitrim.

Minor B Hurling Championship was played on Friday 8th July in Cloneen on a score line Fethard 0-8, Kilsheelan 1-9. This was our best game to date and with a little extra luck should have come away victors having been reduced to fourteen men after 15 minutes. We trailed 1-3 to 0-3 at the break and our team put up a great show in the second half despite four players not available on the night for selection. Team was: Michael Fleming, Stephen O’Meara, Declan Doyle, Ed Sheehan, Niall Hayes, William O’Brien, David Prout, James Smyth (0-2), Liam Ryan, Richard Gorey (0-1), Alan O Connor (0-3f), Dean Tobin (0-1), James Kelly, Glen O'Meara and Adrian Lawrence.
