DIED RECENTLY
We record the death of Con McCormack, Shanakyle, Drangan, who died on Sunday 15th December. Remains will leave McCarthy's Funeral Parlour at 6.15pm on Monday 16th December for the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Drangan. Requiem Mass at 11am on Tuesday followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery.
COMMUNITY COUNCIL
There will be no meeting of Fethard & Killusty Community Council in December. The next meeting will take place on January 14th in the Tirry Community Centre at 8.30pm.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our voluntary workers at the Day Care Centre, Meals on Wheels, Tidy Towns, Residents Committees, Community Lotto, Christmas Lighting Committee, Community Information Office and the participants of the FÁS Community Scheme for their dedication over the past twelve months and wish all a Very Happy Christmas. We would also like to thank all who supported us during the year and a special ‘thank-you’ to Jonathan Cooney, Tom Fitzgerald and the staff of Tipperary County Council for their help and ongoing cooperation over the past twelve months.
T.Y. TOPS TEN
This year’s Patrician Presentation Transition Year production ‘T.Y. Tops Ten’ is a mixture of the past ten musicals performed by the past Transition Years. The show opened on Tuesday 10th and ran for four nights, Tuesday 10th, Wednesday 11th, Friday 13th and Saturday 14th December, in the Abymill Theatre. The cast are photographed above after Wednesday nights performance.
COMMUNITY LOTTO CHRISTMAS EXTRA
For the weeks leading up to Christmas, Fethard & Killusty Community Lotto will have six extra free draws every week for 3 x Christmas Hams and 3 x Christmas Turkeys. This is in addition to the €10,000 Jackpot, €150 ‘Match Three’ prize and 3 x €50 Lucky Dip Draws every week. The Sellers Prize for the winning jackpot ticket is now €740. We would like to thank everyone for their ongoing support every week, it is really appreciated!

THE LADY SINGS THE BLUES - MARY COUGHLAN
Fethard and Tipperary blues fans are in for a rare treat on Saturday night 21st December when Ms Mary Coughlan performs in the Abymill Theatre. Mary Coughlan is recognised as one of Europe’s leading lady singers of the blues. She will be supported on Saturday night by local singer Jewel Burke, an excellent artiste in her own right. The December Meets of the Ballylusky White Heather Harriers are as follows, Sunday 15th Golden; Sunday 22nd Ballingarry; Thursday 26th (St Stephens Day) Drangan. All meets at 12 noon.
RECONCILIATION
The ceremony of reconciliation will be held in Fethard Parish Church on Monday night 16th December at 7.30pm. All are asked to attend this ceremony in preparation for Christmas.
The Augustinian Abbey will hold their reconciliation ceremony on Saturday 21st December following 7.30pm Mass.
CAROL SERVICE
The annual Christmas Carol Service will be held in Holy Trinity Church of Ireland, Main Street on Sunday 22nd December at 8pm. All are invited and welcome to come along and sing. Refreshments will be served afterwards.
FETHARD YOUTH CLUB
The club has now closed for the Xmas holidays and we would like to wish all our members a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We will be back in full swing for the New Year with plans for our New Years party already underway, we will notify all our members when we will re-open.
We would like to thank Noelle O'Dwyer, Rural Outreach Worker from the Tipperary Youth Services, for her visit on Saturday night last, hope she enjoyed her visit with us and saw how much hard work and time goes into these teenagers.
Saturday night last saw some of our members doing an Arts and Crafts session, with Candle Holders being made, and some really wonderful work was created.
We would like to wish our Transition Year students the best of luck for their show which is being performed at the Abbey Mill Theatre, good luck lads, you will be used to performing after our Variety Show, lets hope there are no last minute nerves.
We would also like to advise people that we will be holding our annual Table Quiz on Friday, 20th December 2002, in Joe Ahearns Pub at 8pm. Please, please come along and support this really worthy cause, the proceeds from this table quiz goes straight back into the club, enabling us to fund future events, keep entrance fees down and most importantly, keep the club running.
New leaders are urgently required and we would be delighted to see you any Saturday night from 7.10pm -9.10pm, if you have 2 hours to spare please come on down and see what we are all about.
FETHARD ATHLETIC CLUB

The club was represented by seven athletes at the All-Ireland even-aged cross-country championships held in Navan, Co. Meath, last weekend. With only two club teams from Tipperary qualified for the event, the participation alone of the Fethard boys under-12 team of Ben Walsh, Conor Prendergast, Kevin Quigley, John Lalor and Darragh Dwyer can be considered as an excellent achievement. Individual medals were on offer for the twelve athletes across the line and team captain Darragh Dwyer ran a splendid race to win his 1st All-Ireland cross-country medal by finishing in 12th place. Darragh was followed by Muster under/11 bronze medallist John Lalor who finished in 32nd position. Kevin Quigley, Conor Prendergast and Ben Walsh ran very competitively to finish in 78th, 92nd and 110th places respectively.
In the provincial category, the Munster team, of which Darragh was a scoring member, were the gold medallists. In the girls under/14 race, Mary Gleeson and Elaine Kennedy were Fethard’s representatives. Mary achieved an excellent 25th placing despite being boxed in at the start and suffering a nasty spike to her knee. Elaine, who was representing her county for the first time at an All-Ireland, finished in a very creditable 67th place. The final cross-country of the season, the county cross-country relays, take place on next Sunday 15th December at the Clonmel Racecourse.
Our Christmas Party takes place the following night, Monday 16th December in the Ballroom. All club members and families are invited to attend.
FETHARD RUGBY CLUB
The Committee of Fethard & District Rugby Club wish to thank most sincerely everybody who supported their recent table quiz and sponsored walk, both of which were highly successful and surpassed all expectations. Your support was greatly appreciated.
The under-10s and under-12s travelled to Fermoy on Sunday last. The under-10s team played well with tries coming from William Power and Daniel Hickey. Kevin Hayes and Tim O’Hagan played very well and were unlucky not to score more tries. The final result was a loss to Fethard 4-2.
The under-12s had a great game of rugby and it was a superb match to watch with a great effort by all the players resulting in a 3-0 score line in the first half, with James Kelly, Andrew Yates and William Grassick scoring. In the second half, Fermoy came back strong with two tries and it looked to be a very close game until the last minute when a try was scored for Fethard. The final score was 4-2 to Fethard.
The sponsored walk was a great success and a special thanks to all the sponsors and those who participated in the event. A bus will leave Fethard at 9.15am on Sunday 15th December for a trip to Shannon. Training as usual on Saturday at 11am.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTING APPEAL
The total cost of erecting and purchasing this years Christmas Street Lights is over €19,000. Most of the expense this year is only once-off and with the support of the Community Council, local businesses and fundraising, the committee are confident on raising the money to pay for the lights. The Community Lotto will donate €10,000, Coolmore Stud will donate €5,000 and the rest will be raised locally. To start the fundraising, the pupils of Patrician Presentation Secondary School art class have prepared 'Christmas Lights Donation Boxes' which will be available in local shops. We ask for your support ‘Buying a Bulb’ by putting the equivalent amount in the boxes provided in the local shops. We also thank the local businesses who have already agreed to make a donation towards the overall costs.
COUNTRY CHRISTMAS MARKET
Fethard Country Markets will hold their Christmas Market from 8am to 11am on Friday December 20th. Fethard Country Markets, established 1947, is the longest established Country Market in the country. Mrs Hannie Leahy, a founder member, is we are glad to report, still very actively involved in the weekly operation. The usual Christmas fare of holly, cakes, puddings, etc will be on offer, so come along early!
DAY CARE CENTRE EXTENSION OPENING
Past supervisor of the Day Care Centre, Sr Christine, was given the honour of cutting the tape at the official opening of the extension to Fethard and District Day Care Centre on Thursday 5th December. The extension was built the Fethard & Killusty Community Council and was part funded by the South Eastern Health Board. Following the opening, Mass was celebrated at the centre by Fr Tom Breen P.P. Among those attending were, Joe Nixon FÁS Clonmel, Cllrs John Fahey, Denis Landy and Susan Meagher; past and present members of the Community Council, Fethard FÁS Community Scheme Staff, voluntary workers with the Fethard Meals on Wheels and Day Care Centre and the senior citizens who attend the centre every day. Laurence and Rosena Kenny, Centra Foodmarket, kindly sponsored the food and wine reception that followed, for which we were most grateful.
WHERE IS KILMURRY
Quite a number of local residents were puzzled on hearing the winners of the South Tipperary Environmental Awards presented at Hotel Minella recently. Second prize in the small (under half acre) old cemetery section went to Kilmurry Cemetery, Fethard. Problem solved! The scheme covered electoral areas, not parishes. Kilmurry cemetery, as far as we know, is actually in the Kilsheelan area.
Congratulations to Fethard’s Woodvale Walk Residents Association who won €800 second prize in their section of the competition.
We received the following information from Margaret Doyle, Ballyneale. "The prize-winning Kilmurray graveyard is in the parish of Ballyneale and Grangemockler, about half a mile at the Ballydine side of Ballyneale church." Thanks Margaret.
MICKEY CROKE
A fair few euro of local punters money went down the Swanee when Mickey Croke (the horse) failed to show in the 3.15 bumper race at Hereford. Owned by Lady Lloyd Webber, the horse is named after Mickey Croke, the local trainer who broke him. Mickey Croke (the man) says, he (the horse) was not suited by the going at Hereford and with firmer ground he will win next time out.
NEILIE’S MARATHON RUN
Congratulations to Neilie Hall on his Dublin City Marathon run which realised a total of €788 for South Tipperary Hospice Group. Thanks to all who supported him.
ST VINCENT DE PAUL
The local conference of St Vincent de Paul asks for your support this coming weekend for their annual church gate collection. During the past 12 months the committee have spent €3,100 on holidays for our senior citizens, €2,800 on help with education, particularly at 3rd level, €3,800 in helping families at Christmas, and €5,100 on help to individuals and families throughout the years. A totally confidentially service is offered to those in need and we confidently ask for your generous support as in the past.
MUNSTER HOCKEY TEAM
Sarah Gleeson, Brookhill, has been selected on the Munster under/18 girls hockey team that takes part in this seasons inter-provincial championships. Sarah, as far as we know, is the first lady inter-provincial players from this area. We wish her and her team the very best of luck in the games which take place in Galway this weekend, December 13th and 14th.
DIED RECENTLY
| The death has occurred on December 2nd of Mrs Mary Byard, Burke Street. Mary Byard’s death, after a very short illness within two weeks of the death of her brother Gus Kenrick, came as a great shock to her family and friends. An old and respected resident of Burke Street, she will be greatly missed by her family and her many old Burke Street friends.
Sincere sympathy is extended to her daughter Patsy Burke, Kylenahone, Killenaule, her grandchildren, and extended family. Interment took place at Ballingarry cemetery following Requiem Mass at the Augustinian Abbey Fethard.

CHRISTMAS HAT PARTY
Its time again to start planning your ‘Christmas Hat’ for the annual ‘Hat Party’ organised for Charity at Burkes Bridge Bar. This year’s ‘Party’ will be held on Saturday 14th December and promises to be bigger and better than ever with ‘Great Prizes’, food and loads of craic! The theme for this year is ‘Make, Wear and Name your Hat’. All hats should be clearly named and easily read. Great prizes this year for the top three hats and an additional two prizes for the ‘Best Named’ hat on display. We look forward to seeing a large turn out again to support this great fundraising idea spawned some years ago by Marianne Shortall. This years entry is €5 which all goes to charity.
CHRISTMAS TREE
On Monday last, 2nd December, a crew from County Council, SAP Nurseries and Coolmore planted a beautiful Christmas Tree in The Square Fethard. This tree was kindly supplied to the Community Council by Coolmore Stud. Our special thanks to Tom Fitzgerald and his County Council staff for the preparation of the site over the past few weeks.
FETHARD GAA CLUB
The curtains came down on our playing season for 2002 on Saturday last, 30th November, in Cashel when we lost the senior football semi final of the county league to Aherlow on a final score of, Fethard 2-7, Aherlow 1-14. The team was: Paul Fitzgerald, Willie O’Meara, Damien Byrne 0-1, Nicky Murphy, Alan Phelan, Cian Maher, Glen Burke 0-1, Aiden Fitzgerald 0-1, Stephen O’Donnell, Brian Coen, Kenneth Byrne 0-1, Michael Dillon, Carl Maher 2-2 (2f), Miceál Spillane 0-1, Kevin O’Donnell. Subs used: Owen Doyle, Willie Morrissey, Thomas Anglim and Martin Ryan. Thanks to trainer, selectors and players for a most enjoyable year and a south title. Our next event is the Annual general meeting on 29th December.
Our lotto jackpot €6,500 was not won. We had 3 ‘match threes’ and the following received €50 each: T. Quinn, Stouke, Rossmore, Cashel, O’Shea Family, Woodvale Walk, Fethard, and Deirdre Dorney, 57 Woodvale Walk, Fethard. The €50 lucky dip went to Pat Bradshaw, The Green. The numbers drawn were 1, 5, 8 and 19.
The very best off luck to Miceál McCormack in his quest for the south board chair on this Sunday 8th December. Our deepest sympathies are at this time with Ellen Ryan (nee Aylward ), Cashel, and family on their recent bereavement.
