Fethard got the better of Aherlow on Saturday 8th November in the Tipperary All-County Adult Football League Final. On a cold day in New Inn, Fethard had the advantage of the strong wind in the first half and should have taken the lead on seven minutes when Michael Spillane hit a bad wide with only the goalie to beat. WATER POLO
Selected to play Water Polo for UCC where he is a first year student, is Derek Newport, The Valley. Players from Fethard have participated at various sports and team events at all levels. As far as we can discover, Derek is the first water polo player from Fethard at that level. A member of Clonmel Water Polo team, Derek is a powerful swimmer. The level of physical fitness required for water polo and the training it involves to attain it, makes the hardest training for other sports look like a stroll in the park.

CUMANN NA SEA GHAEL AWARDS
Dick Allen, Killusty, is to be honoured for his outstanding contribution to Tipperary football when he will receive his award at a function to be held in Brú Ború, Cashel on Sunday 23rd November.
Dick is the last surviving member of the great Tipperary football team, which won our last Senior Football Title in 1935. Dick had the distinction of playing for six years in a row with Munster in the Railway Cup. Dick was elected to Tipperary's Hall of Fame in 1985, An outstanding sportsman on the field and a true gentleman on the field. We salute you Dick on your worthy selection.

ARMISTICE DAY REMEMBERED
This week, the week of Armistice Day (Tuesday 11th November), the Nationwide television programme devoted to Pte John Condon of Waterford on Monday night aroused nationwide interest and received widespread publicity. John Condon was 14 years old, the youngest soldier killed in the Great War. How many can recall the names of even two or three of the 40 plus Fethard men killed in the same conflict.
Well over 40 others returned, two of those who survived the 1914-18 war had stories similar to that of John Condon. Danny Mullins and Paddy O’Donnell in a spirit of adventure as teenagers decided to join the army and go to the front. As Danny said, they did not know what ‘the front’ was or what it entailed, but they certainly were not long in finding out. For some reason or other, recruitment was not taking place at Clonmel Barracks on the day they arrived and they were advised to try Waterford. They walked the thirty miles to Waterford and enlisted. Both were 18 years old and were never previously out of Fethard. Their war experience stories to follow would have made material for many a book.
Paddy O’Donnell was wounded in battle and carried a steel plate in his head for the remainder of his life. Brothers Mick and Paddy O’Shea were two others who fought and returned. They were on the Somme for the entire campaign and fought in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd battles of Ypres. Nineteen thousand were killed on the first day of the battle of the Somme on the 1st July 1916.
John Condon , the boy soldier, is a hero on the continent, but almost unknown in his native city. The forty men from Fethard lie in Flanders fields. Some were never found and their names are inscribed on the memorials at the Menin Gate in Ypres and on the immense Thiepval Memorial where over 74 000 names of missing soldiers are recorded on the Memorial. As bodies are discovered names are removed from the memorial.
Why did they go?
Was it the spirit of adventure or for economic necessity? Some say to this present day, that they were unpatriotic!
Perhaps they went to fight for what poet Thomas Kettle, a Dublin man, said in a letter home to the baby daughter he never saw. “When they ask why we went, tell them we fought not for King, flag or empire, but for a dream born in a herdsman’s shed.”
Seventy thousand Irishmen were killed in the Great war. It is only in the very recent past, the sacrifice they made is being recognised and remembered. Better late than never!

ATTEMPTED BREAK IN FOILED
Quick reaction by alert neighbours when the burglar alarm went off prevented three robbers ‘smash and grab’ attempt to gain entry to the XL Stop ‘n Shop at Main Street in the early hours of Friday morning last. Joint shop proprietor, John Morrissey from Cashel, when phoned was quickly on the scene. The would be burglars were still in the vicinity but unfortunately succeeded in making their escape before the arrival of the Garda, who would have had to travel from Clonmel.

FETHARD TOWN ATLAS
A date has not been set yet for the launch of the Fethard Town Atlas, by Dr. Tadhg O’Keeffe. It was originally planned to have it before Christmas in the Abymill Theatre but due to various circumstances the launch has now been put back to early February, possibly the same weekend as the Fethard Tipperariana Book Fair which will be held on Sunday 8th February.
The printing of the Atlas is still on target for the end of November and all pre-publication offers will be delivered as promptly as possible following their receipt from the printers.
This atlas will include historical and archaeological details of over 400 sites, an historical essay, and a range of large-format maps, reconstructions, views and photographs. All trace the growth of Fethard from its possible origins as an early Christian church site, to its foundation as an Anglo-Norman town in the early 1200s, right up to the 20th century. Fethard will join twelve other Irish towns and cities, which have been published as part of the IHTA series. FETHARD GAA CLUB
The curtain came down on our senior football campaign on Saturday November 8th last in New Inn when we won the County League Division 1 (Corn Ui Chlumhain) Cup presented to our captain, Paul Fitzgerald, by County Football chairman Michael Frawley after a difficult game that finished on a scoreline, Fethard 0-9 (0-5), Aherlow 0-6 (0-3). Since 1999 we have appeared in four county league finals and one semifinal and on four of the five appearances we played Aherlow — in 2000, Fethard 2-9 Aherlow 0-8; 2001 (Fethard 2-12, Aherlow 1-15); replay, Fethard 1-11, Aherlow 1-12.; 2002 Fethard 2-7, Aherlow 1-14. This made it four years in a row with some silverware for our senior footballers. The team last Saturday was: Paul Fitzgerald. Alan Phelan, Michael Aherne, Willie Morrissey, Glen Burke 0-3f, Michael Quinlan , Stephen O'Donnell , Aiden Fitzgerald, P J Aherne, Miceál Spillane, Michael Dillon 0-1, Brian Coen, Conor McCarthy 0-1f, Tom Anglim 0-2, John P Looby 0-1. Subs were: Jimmy O’Meara 0-1 (Miceál Spillane), Cian Maher (Brian Coen), Nicky Murphy (Conor McCarthy). Our Lotto Jackpot of €1,700 was not won. POTTERY SHOP OPENS ON MAIN STREET

FETHARD ATHLETIC CLUB
Fethard juveniles travelled to Ballynonty on Sunday 9th November to compete in the County B Cross-Country Championships. First into action on a tough windswept course was the girls under-10 team of Hannah Stapleton, Emma Walsh and Radka Janlikova. Radka was first Fethard girl home with an excellent 4th place followed by Emma and Hannah in 14th and 20th place respectively. In the boys under-10 race Vincent Lawrence ran really well to claim 13th place as did Ashley Laslett who finished in 22nd position. All our under-10s are entitled to feel very proud of their achievements in their debut cross country season. Girls under-12 was the next race to feature and here Fethard provided not only the individual winner in the person of Hannah Trehy, but also the team gold medal winners. This was Hannah’s 2nd win of the season and she was ably supported by her sister Róisin in 5th place, her cousin Aisling O’Connor in 7th place, Aisling Dwyer in 12th and Sarah McManus in 20th position. In the boys under-12 event Fethard’s only representative was Louis Rice who ran well to finish in 4th place. Laura Rice was also our sole competitor in the girls under-14 competition and she ran a determined race to claim 7th spot. Next to toe the line were the boys under-14 and in this race Fethard’s team of Darragh Dwyer, Lolo Trehy and Ben Walsh combined splendidly to take the team gold medals. Darragh also had the distinction of winning the race, adding yet another gold medal to his collection. Last to take part was Wayne Laslett who put in a great performance to win the bronze medal in the boys under-16 race.
Upcoming events are the Munster even age championships in Killarney November 9th and the County Cross-Country Relays to be held in Thurles on the 16th of November.

Why has it taken me a half-a-life time to discover that Fethard is a charming and most interesting town? Perhaps it is that it has had to live in the shadow of the, capital of South Tipperary - Clonmel - a town which for much of the last half century has been arrogantly sucking the commercial lifeblood of its smaller neighbours. Killusty recover from early setback to win well

A comprehensive win for the home team and in truth it could have been a lot more but poor finishing and good goalkeeping kept the score down Ballingarry got off to a good start and Adrian Cleere had them in front after 15 minutes when he picked up a loose ball and cracked it home.
After this the home ream started to get back on top and Jimmy O'Meara had them level with a good header at the far post after 25 minutes. Just five minutes later Declan Fanning put the home team in front when he fired home from the edge of the box Brian Coen got on the scoresheet on 43 minutes when after good work down the left he was on hand to shoot home, 3-1 at the break. Killusty continued their dominance in the second half and added two more goals through Brian Coen on 70 minutes and Pa Looby on 85 minutes Munster Youth Cup second round

Fanning hits four as Cashel Town run riot

Clearly a game in which the home side were on fire. They dominated throughout and took their chances. They were 5-0 up at the break and looking good, the goals in the opening half were scored by Paul Hoare, Michael King, Kieran Bergin and Eddie Fanning who got two.
As hard as they tried, Killusty were still fighting a losing battle in the second half. And to add more salt to the wounds of the visitors defence the home side notched up an impressive four more goals in the half. Eddie Fanning got two more to bring his tally for the day to four, Michael King got a second, and to top things off for the day, Colin Bargary got one.

ARMY/NAVAL CROSS-COUNTRY ATHLETICS
Anthony Feery turned in an excellent performance in the Southern Division Army and Naval Championship race in Powerstown Park, Clonmel, on Wednesday last, to finish second overall and a clear winner in the Junior category. In the one hundred strong field which included Army and Naval representation from Cork, Kilkenny and Clonmel, Anthony kept the Tipp flag flying with this great run. Anthony is stationed in Collins Barracks, Cork.

FRANK TIPP FM ‘ARTIST OF THE WEEK’
Congratulations to Frank Feery who was featured as Artist of the Week on Tony Brookes Irish and Country Show on Tipp FM. Frank who hails from Killusty, now living in Roscommon, went down very well with the Tipp FM listenership and we have received many messages of congratulations to pass on the him. Singer I songwriter Frank has written such songs as "Tipperary in my Dreams", also recorded by Jimmy Buckley, "My Lovely Isle of Green", also recorded by Brendan Shine and "My Galway Queen", a very popular song also recorded by Dominic Kirwan. we join in wishing Frank continued success, from his many friends throughout Tipp and in particular, everyone in the Fethard / Killusty area. FETHARD'S OLDEST PETROL PUMPS CLOSED

Fethard's oldest petrol pumps were closed and taken down on Tuesday 4th November. Due to new safety regulations, underground petrol tanks adjacent to streets are no longer permitted. The two underground petrol tanks are photographed above being filled in and had already taken three lorry loads of concrete by the time this photograph was taken on Tuesday evening. The garage on Main Street has now closed and proprietor, Kieran Duggan, will now operate his business from his home in Kiltinan.

FETHARD PLAYERS

Fethard Players will stage Sean O’Casey’s, ‘The Plough and The Stars’ in the Abymill Theatre on Sunday 16th November for a six-night run. Sean O’Casey’s classic needs little introduction to Irish audiences as it has long been recognised as one of Ireland’s greatest plays. Its mixture of tragedy and comedy captures the dramatic events in Dublin during and prior to the Easter Rising of 1916. A large cast in this production includes: Marian Gilpin, Angela Dillon Whyte, Mary O’Connell, Mia Treacy, Sarah Kennedy, Siobhán Prout, Jimmy O’Sullivan, Gerry Fogarty, Philip O’Meara, Robert O’Keeffe, Vincent Murphy, Eoin Whyte, Joe Hanley, Michael Tillyer and Eoin Powell.
