FETHARD BOY SCOUTS

On Saturday June 28th, scouts took part in a fun camping weekend in Dundrum, the scout section of the troop went up to the Galtee lakes, Lough Dihneen and Curra, under the shadow of Galtymore mountain. A hike we never done before, with a very tough climb at the start but the reward was a fantastic view which everyone agreed was well worth the walk. In attendance on the hike were leaders, John Noonan, David Kennedy and Philip O'Donnell, and scouts Mike McCarthy, Dermot Culligan, Kieran Barrett, Paul McCarthy, Declan Doyle and Kieran 'Curly' O'Connell, whose first hike it was with the troop - well done Curly! Missing from the hike was Robert Phelan, who remained behind in Dundrum to help out with the cub section of the troop, with cub section leader, John Cloonan. More info to follow on the cubs.

FETHARD GAA CLUB
Fethard senior footballers take on Moyle Rovers in the county championship this weekend. In the intermediate hurling south championship we beat Fr Sheehys in Clonmel on Sunday last on a scoreline, Fethard 2-14, Fr Sheehys 1-13, giving us six points out of a possible eight, with four games to go. Our county league game against Annacarthy takes place in Fethard on Tuesday 15th July at 8pm.
On the 1st July in Cloneen we had a convincing win against Mullinahone in the start of our Junior B Football campaign, the final score being, Fethard 4-14 (2-6), Mullinahone 1-5 (0-3). The team was: Kenny Hackett, Sean Og Ryan, Willie Quigley, Paraic Cloonan, Paul Hackett, Philly Blake, Michael Costello, Chris Coen 0-2, Colm Coen 0-3, M J Croke 1-1, Joe Keane 2-3, Shane Aylward 0-1, Martin Coen 0-4 (3f), Michael O’Riordan 1-0 and Paul McDonald. Our Minor B Hurling commenced on Saturday 5th July in Cloneen against Mullinahone, resulting in a final scoreline of: Mullinahone 3-18 (2-7), Fethard 2-6 (1-5). Juvenile Fixtures: U/14 B Hurling at home to Ballybacon on 10 July at 7pm and on 17th July we are away to Cahir. In U/16 B Hurling we are away to Fr Sheehys at 7pm.

INTERMEDIATE HURLING
Fethard 2-14, Fr Sheehys 1-13.
This was no easy game for last year’s South Champions who were made fight all the way in a keenly contested contest which was played in Clonmel on Sunday evening 6th July. With both teams guilty of missed chances, Fethard had 13 wides and Fr Sheehys 12 wides, during the game. A strong wind favoured Fethard in the first half leaving the score, Fethard 1-7, Fr Sheehys 0-5, at half time. The scorers were: Jamie McCormack 1-1, Colin Allen 0-3 (1f), Aidan Fitzgerald, Shane Walsh and Miceál Spillane scoring 0-1each; with Fr Sheehy’s Liam O’Connor scoring 0-3 (1f), Liam Fleming and J D Sweeney having a point each. Fr Sheehys amassed eight wides to Fethard’s four, so the halftime score could so easily have been level, had Fr Sheehys taken their chances. In the second half Fethard upped their game, Fr Sheehys introduced Michael Fleming at half time for Brendan English, and they seemed to play with more purpose. Liam O’Connor, outstanding at centre forward, seemed to pop up at the end of every move to score freely, adding 1-7 to his first half 3 points, scoring 1-10 out of their total 1-13. Liam Fleming scored 0-1 in this period. Fethard replied with Miceál Spillane scoring 1-2, Michael Dillon, Colin Allen (free), Owen Doyle, Stephen O’Donnell and Brian Coen all getting 1 point each, to give a final score of Fethard 2-14, Fr Sheehys 1-13. PUPPY SHOW
Tipperary Foxhounds held their annual Puppy Show at the Kennels on the evening of Wednesday 2nd July. Mr. Michael Higgins, former master of the Tipps, and Mr. James Quinlan, Kilkenny Foxhounds huntsman, judged this years young entry of five couple doghounds and five and half couple bitches.
Winner of the doghound section was ‘Charmer’, second ‘Chester’, and Third ‘Champion’, all walked at the Kennels. First in the bitches section was ‘Chapel’, second ‘Ramble’, and third ‘Bluebell’. The winner and second were also walked at the Kennels, ‘Bluebell’ walked by Ms. Ginny Hutton. Winner of the best entered hound in the hunting field last season was ‘Radio’ walked by Mr. Tommy Morgan.
Mr. Kennedy, hunt chairman thanked the puppy walkers, all sporting landowners, and the judges. He paid a very special tribute to the kennel staff of Pat, James and P.J. on the pristine condition of the kennels and their surrounds, and the excellent condition of the hounds in kennel. The every concluded with the Puppy Show Tea. At the festive fare presentations were made to long time lady followers and great hunt supporters, Ms Neta Ryan, Ms. Yvonne McClintock, Ms Jean O’Brien and Ms. Di Stokes. A presentation was also made to Mr. Timmy Hyde, former master to mark his years of service and interest in the Gallant Tipps. Judging by the enthusiasm of the very large crowd present and the number of the younger generation in attendance the future of the Tipps and indeed hunting in South Tipperary seems assured for many seasons to come.

TIDY TOWNS
Fethard Tidy Towns committee wish to thank sincerely all who contributed to their recent Church Gate Collection. Ireland is reckoned to be one of the worst countries in Europe for littering offences and in this regard Fethard is no exception. However, one has to admit that the litter situation on our streets has improved since the school holiday’s commenced. Fethard Tidy Towns committee, who continue the uphill battle to make our town neater and tidier, meet every second Tuesday in the Tirry Community Centre at 8pm. Anyone interested in joining and helping out would be very welcome to come along.

TRAFFIC PROBLEMS
While the skateboarders would appear to have disappeared, at least temporarily, from our footpaths our attention has been drawn, by a few of our senior citizens to an even greater hazard. The number of very young children riding the new motorized scooters, not alone on the pavement but also on the roads, has increased dramatically in recent weeks. These latest contraptions we are informed are capable of speeds up to twelve or fifteen mph. Parents, it is just not right to leave very young children out in public on these scooters over which they seem to have no proper control or road sense. Please warn them to take extreme care.

TRADITION
Centre back on the Offaly minor hurling team beaten by Kilkenny in last Sundays Leinster M.H. final was James Keane. James who also figured on the Offaly minor football team is son of Garda John Keane, Tullamore, and the Green, Fethard. John, a former Fethard and Tipperary senior player was centre back on the Fethard senior football team that won the 1978 County Senior Football title after a gap of twenty one years, the longest interval between county titles in the clubs history. James is under age for the minor grade again next year and is first cousin of the Fitzgerald brothers, current Fethard and Tipperary players.

FETHARD ATHLETIC CLUB
Shane Gorey was Fethard’s top performer at the Munster Championships held in Castleisland on the 30th of June. Shane took the bronze medal in the final of the boys 800M and is thus entitled to represent his club at National track and field championships to be held in Tullamore in two weeks time.
Meanwhile at the Munster B Championships, where teams of two compete in each event, Fethard juveniles had a most rewarding day’s racing. The girls U/11 team of Aisha Tobin and Roisín Trehy won bronze in the 65m hurdles. Michelle Ryall and Hannah Trehy won gold in both the girls U12 80m and 65m hurdles. In the boys U/13 Kevin Quigley and Darragh Dwyer won gold in the 800m and silver in the long jump and 80m. Siobhan O’Brien was most unfortunate as her team partner failed to attend, she nonetheless competed in the long jump and 80m.

COMMUNITY GAMES MUNSTER FINALS
A bus will leave the post office for university of Limerick on this Saturday at 9.45 sharp. Return Fare €5. This bus must leave on time as volleyball competitors must be registered at 11.30 and traffic will be heavy. Judo competitors are travelling by car as the weigh in is at 10.30 competition will start at 11am.

This year Co Tipperary are hosting the games and Munster Judo co-ordinator is Peggy Colville. Volleyball co-ordinators /Ref are Jennifer Keane and Aidan Fitzgerald. The Munster games director is Joe Keane so we hope the Fethard contingent and everybody from Co. Tipp will do well. Good luck to all.

HOSPICE COLLECTION
South Tipperary Hospice will hold their annual Church Gate Collection in the area next weekend, Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th July. The organizers would like to thank you for your generous support in the past and would appreciate your continued support for this very worthy cause.

RECENT DEATHS
The death has occurred of Mrs Mary O’Connor, Crampscastle. The late Mary O’Connor, formerly Mary Nagle was the last surviving member of her family of nine boys and one girl. A former camogie player of note on the re-formation of Fethard Camogie Club in 1962, although then in the veteran stage, she joined the newly formed St. Rita’s Camogie Club. Her wholehearted displays gave great leadership and encouragement to her younger colleagues, and played a significant part in St. Rita’s winning two county camogie championships in the sixties. Her coffin was draped in the club colours. Interment took place in Calvary Cemetery.
The death has occurred on July 7th of Mr Jack Fitzgerald, Crampscastle. Remains will leave the residence of his son John for Holy Trinity Church Fethard at 7pm on Tuesday 8th July. Burial in Moyglass cemetery following 11am Mass on Wednesday.

CROKE PARK
A large contingent of Fethard and Tipperary football followers travelled to Croke Park on Saturday last to support Tipperary in their All-Ireland S.F. championship play-off game against Donegal. Many visiting Croke Park for the first time since its redevelopment were awe struck by the sheer size of the new GAA Headquarters. They described the sheer volume of sound re-echoing from the stands when the Dublin supporters were in full voice is something that had to be heard to be believed.
All returned very well pleased with Tipperary’s great performance. They say fortune favours the brave and also that goals win matches. Fortune certainly did not favour the brave Tipperary footballers when two excellently created goal chances did not bring the result they deserved. Donegal scored two goals, one at a very critical stage for Donegal, in the second half. These goals probably were the deciding factor in a game that gallant Tipperary, who led by a point midway through the second half, did no way deserve to lose by ten points.
Each and every one of the Tipperary players can look back on the game with pride. They came up from the bottom position in Division 2 of the league and revised their game, especially the players form the intermediate grade, by the very necessary gear or two to perform at such level. They certainly did themselves and the ‘Blue and Gold’ jersey proud.

FETHARD & KILLUSTY AWARENESS GROUP
At a recent meeting of the Awareness Group, at which Garda Des Bell addressed, it was decided to hold a walk on Wednesday 9th July at 8 o'clock within the town of Fethard to emphasise the importance of vigilance towards unsavoury and anti-social behaviour.
The interest and questions by the very large attendance of young people at the meeting showed that the willingness is there to combat any misgivings that are within our society. Please support the Awareness Group in its activities for the town and parish.

FETHARD COMMUNITY WALK

Children and adults who took part in the sponsored walk in aid of the New Community Sportsfield in Fethard last weekend.

A community walk and fun sports in aid of Fethard Community Sports Field took place on Friday last, June 27th. Despite weather conditions being very favourable the turn out was moderate considering the population of the town. However, those who did turn out to walk the circle of Ballybough and compete in the activities in “The Field” really enjoyed themselves. The fun sports certainly lived up to its name and all goings on ‘in the sack’ were most entertaining. The walk commenced from the Town Hall, where the attendance was welcomed by Fr Tom Breen, P.P. and chairman of the sports field committee. Councillor Michael Fitzgerald, chairman South Tipperary County Council, and Councillor John Fahy were among those who came under 'starters orders'.

The committee would like to thank most sincerely the celebrities who attended. County Tipperary football goalkeepers Philly Ryan, Clonmel and our own Paul Fitzgerald who had a marathon session in goal for 60 competitors in the Penalty Shoot Out, which was won by David Connolly from Tramore, grandson of Ned and Eileen Connolly, Garrinch. David’s dad, Liam, was also a former county footballer. Runner up was Tommy Sheehan, son of Caroline and Tommy Sheehan, another county footballer. This talent seems to run in the families.
We were also delighted to welcome John Lacy, Tipperary Town, who is development officer for the IRFU and Denis Leamy, Cashel. Both John and Denis are members of the Munster Rugby squad. John and Denis demonstrated the skills of rugby and it was great to see them in action. International Rugby player, Denis Leamy, presented the magnificent trophy kindly sponsored by John Quirke Jeweller, Cahir, to the team representing Burke’s Bar who won the Pub Relay beating strong teams from Grants, Ahearns, McCarthys, The Castle and The Well.

In the minor football south championship we lost out to Carrick Swans, played in Kilsheelan on Wednesday 25th June, on a score line, Fethard 0-8 (0-4), Carrick Swans 0-15 (0-10). This qualifies Ballyporeen and Carrick Swans for the semifinal.
In minor hurling on this Saturday 5th July we play Mullinahone in Carrick-on-Suir at 8pm in the first game.
In juvenile under-12 hurling on Sat 12th, we are away to Killenaule, and our under 14 ‘B’ hurlers are at home to Ballybacon Grange at 7pm on Thursday 10th July.

Carrick Swans were convincing winners in this South Minor B Championship match played in Kilsheelan on Wednesday 25th June. If they are to advance further they must improve on there scoring, having a total of 24 wides in this game. They were always in front on the scoreboard from the third minute when Alan Rocket pointed a 45m. The same player did the same again after 12 minutes with Daryl Kavanagh pointing in between. Fethard’s reply was, a point from David O’Sullivan and a great line ball from James Smyth, to leave the scoreline after 15 minutes, Carrick Swans 0-3, Fethard 0-2. In the second quarter Carrick scored 7 points to Fethard’s 2 points. Carrick scores in this period: Daryl Kavanagh 0-3 (1f), 1 point each from Kieran Reade, David Smyth and Andrew Walsh. Fethard ‘s reply was, 2 points from Paul Kenrick (1f), to leave the half time score, Carrick Swans 0-10, Fethard 0-4. Fethard tried in vain to get into the game in the second half but were unable to penetrate the Carrick defence who scored 5 points by David Smyth, Kieran Reade, Daryl Kavanagh, Andrew Walsh and substitute David Rees, to Fethard’s 4 points from Shane Aylward, David O’Sullivan, Jamie McCormack (1f), and Paul Kendrick ((1f). The 2003 “Walls of Fethard” road race certainly had an international feel to it as Patrick Guidera and Robert Wade, both home from athletics scholarships in the US, did battle with Mick Kelly from Gowran and Raivis Zakis from Latvia for the honour of first man through the ancient town wall gate of Sparagoleigh. At the finish it was Zakis who proved strongest, holding off the challenge of Guidera for an excellent win while Kelly finished just 1 second adrift in 3rd place. In the women’s race, Madeline Doroney continued her superb run of form with a convincing win from Carina Walsh in 2nd place.

ROAD DEATHS
The epidemic of fatal accidents on our Irish roads over the week-end just past remind us once again, as if reminding was necessary, of the terrible toll of human life being taken by Irish roads today. The deaths have now reached crisis point, and it is a recorded fact the road accidents are now in the top three causes of death amongst young Irish people between 18 and 25 years. The biggest problem seems to be that these tragedies are becoming to be accepted as the normal in present day living.
Prior to writing this I approached a local octogenarian and asked him, “What was the name of the man that was killed off his bicycle by a car on the old road at Garrinch.” Without hesitation he replied, Mike Slattery. This accident took place over sixty years ago. Around the same time, Micky Loughlin, the pump sinker, was killed beyond Lisronagh. These two deaths became part of Fethard folklore and were spoken of for years afterwards.
Currently a road death has become part and parcel of every day living. It is truly frightening. Something will have to be done - but what. Certainly if as many people died form food poisoning or whatever illness last weekend as did on the roads, the papers would not hold the headlines and there would be a national outcry for something to be done.

FETHARD JUVENILE GAA
It has been another busy week for the juveniles, with the under/12s playing two matches in the next round of their championship bid, they played host to both Ballybacon and Mullinahone, and both of these matches had to have been the most nail biting to date, with each one being more exciting and thrilling than the last. The determination and skill these young players have shown would do any parent proud and they have won all of their four games played, with another two to go. The final score was as follows, Fethard 3-05, Ballybacon 3-03. This match was played on Monday last, with Fethard managing to score the wining goal in the dying seconds, proving to be a really exciting match to watch.
The result of last Thursday’s match against Mullinahone was, Fethard 1-04, Mullinahone 0-04, with Fethard once again scoring a goal in the dying seconds. This was a hard match played and at half time the score stood at one point in Fethard’s favour. The action was point for point and the tension and atmosphere was electric as these wonderful young players came back and scored the much-needed goal. Fethard are at home on Thursday evening at 7pm to Kilsheelan, we wish them the best of luck.
The club would also like to congratulate Andrew Walsh (Cloneen) and Eoin O'Connell (Fethard) for their performances in the Primary Games in Kerry.
Congratulations are also due to Glen O'Meara, James Smith, Connie Flynn and John Leahy on their selection to the South Tipperary U/16 Football panel. Well done lads!
The Juvenile Club would also like to invite all the children and their parents to the Abymill Theatre on Monday evening 7.30 for a talk by the Clonmel Youth Liaison Officer - Des Bell. He will be discussing issues that parents and the youth of Fethard are facing and some of the topics up for discussion are vandalism, underage drinking and drugs. It would be great to see a good turn out as it is for the benefit of our children and ourselves, parents of our town.

THE RABBIT CATCHERS
Mr Michael Conry of Carlow is currently researching information for a book he is writing on the Economic Situation, especially amongst rural workers during the 1939 - 45 World War period. During his research work he has visited Fethard a number of occasions where he is seeking information on those who were full time rabbit catching during the period. He has interviewed the few still surviving in the area, from whom he has received what he considered excellent information. Mr Conry was intrigued to learn that Jimmy Sheehan of Killusty had written a comic song about the job.

He is seeking more information on Mr Aird, The Green, a well-known rabbit and game buyer and exporter of the time. Mr Conry has so far failed to discover what Mr. Aird's Christian name was. He is also anxious to discover if anyone in the area would know the rest, or part of, Jimmy Sheehan’s ballad on the Rabbit Catchers.

DIED RECENTLY
The death has occurred in Dublin of Mrs. Monica Fahy, Crampscastle. Interment took place at Calvary Cemetery.

LOURDES TREE
Twenty Pilgrims from Fethard area travelled on the diocesan pilgrimage to Lourdes. Each found the experience most uplifting. How many of the pilgrims or indeed the general public are aware we have a 'Lourdes Tree' growing in Main Street. A Miss Corcoran of Barrack St. on returning from a trip to Lourdes in the early 20th Century brought back a chestnut or conker as it is more popularly known to her friend Miss Mary Heffernan, Main Street. Miss Heffernan planted the chestnut in the garden at the rear of her residence on Main Street, now Fethard Beauty Clinic, where it is still growing today.

MONROE WALK CLEARED
Congratulations to Jimmy O'Shea and Johnny Burke and their two loyal young helpers, Patrick O'Brien and C.J. Taylor, who have worked over the past two weeks on opening up the Monroe Walk to pedestrians again. As well as clearing some fallen trees, they have also erected a stile on each end to prevent stray animals from wandering.
The Monroe Walk is a very beautiful experience that takes you past Breen's Bridge and out at Rocklow. Not suitable for buggies or prams.
The work was all supplied voluntary and expenses sponsored by Fethard & Killusty Community Council.

ICA ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Fethard ICA Guild held their AGM on June 10th. Margaret Morrissey C.D.A. attended the meeting. The newly elected officers are as follows: President, Nuala Delaney; Treasurer, Ann Horan; and Secretary, Anne Gleeson.
Our summer outing is arranged for July 10th, leaving from Fethard Town Hall at 9.45am. The outing will leave for Woodstock, Inistioge, and then on to Kilkenny to view the craft exhibition on show at the Design Centre. The exhibition includes a display of rush-work by our talented member, Marie Crean. Afterwards, we plan to have some time for shopping followed by and evening meal.

COMMUNITY GAMES
Congratulations to everybody from Fethard/Killusty area who took part in the County Athletics Finals at Thurles Dog Track on Sunday, especially to Michael Costello, Woodvale Walk, who won the 100 meters under-12, and to Kate Quigley, Redcity who qualified for the semi-final in under-8 80 meters. Fethard Athletic Club had a great day as Killenaule representatives Róisin Trehy and Michelle Ryall both won gold for their parish. The under/12 boys relay team won silver, Eoin Quigley won silver, and Kevin Quigley and Hannah Trehy won bronze. Shane Gorey won gold for Drangan and Darragh Dwyer won silver for Powerstown. All of these children are members of Fethard Athletic Club. We wish all winners the best of luck in Mosney.

The members of Fethard Ladies Football Club wish to thank sincerely, Mr Bob Grant, of Grants Bar, Main Street, for his generous gesture in sponsoring the club with a set of new jerseys. Bob presented the jerseys to the ladies at a training session on Thursday night last.
The girls will wear them with pride, and we are also sure with distinction, for the first time when they play Cappawhite in a championship game on this coming Monday night June 30th.
The club will promote a table quiz in Grants Bar on Thursday night 10th July at 9pm. The committee also invite any young ladies, especially those who are now on school summer holidays, who are not already members to come along and join in the training sessions on Monday and Thursday nights.

JUDO
Community Games committee would like to send best wishes to Richard Gorey, Moanbeg who will represent Ireland in the European Youth Olympics in Paris next month. The Judo club, and indeed the Gorey family, have a long association with the games. Richard has several County, Munster and National Community games titles under his belt as indeed had Kenneth O’Donnell, who represented Ireland at the Youth Olympics in Portugal in 1977, and Avril Colville, who was the first member of the club to Represent Ireland at the European Olympics in Belgium in 1991. Richard is sure to do Ireland and Fethard proud.

FIRE AT BACK GREEN

Over ten firemen were needed to control a potentially very dangerous fire in Fethard last Wednesday. The fire was accidentally caused at the Back Green when rubbish was being burned against the back wall of the unused house, setting the dry thatch underneath alight. The fire spread underneath the galvanised roof of the adjoining houses, also unused, and was held at that stage before it could spread to dwelling houses close by.

CORPUS CHRISTI PROCESSION
We had an excellent turnout for the annual Corpus Christi Procession on Sunday evening last. At the ceremonies conclusion in the Augustinian Abbey grounds, Very Rev. Fr. Tom Breen P.P. thanked all who took part with a special thank-you to the Fethard Boy Scouts troop, the First Communion girls, to Joe Keane for providing the transport and amplification, and to David Tobin who led the hymn singing.
While, by modern standards, it was most heartening to see the number of teenagers and younger children taking part, it was disappointing to see more just sitting idly by or whizzing past on their bicycles as the Blessed Sacrament passed through the streets. After all, the future of the processions is definitely in the younger generation’s hands.

ACCOMMODATION REQUIRED FOR FLEADH CHEOIL
The Fleadh Cheoil Committee are under severe pressure to provide accommodation for the large number of people who plan to descend on Clonmel in late August. They are appealing for anybody within a 20-mile radius of the town who might be willing to take in people on a B&B basis or to rent out their house for a week, to please contact Maureen or Kathleen at 052 24960 as soon as possible. There is a special appeal to anybody who accommodated guests for the Fethard Culchie Festival to contact the office.
