A Harvest Thanksgiving Service will take place in Holy Trinity Church of Ireland on Friday 18th October at 8pm. All are welcome.

DIED RECENTLY
We record the death of Mrs Helen Flynn, Glenagaddy, Fethard, who died on Monday 30th September. Removal took place at 7 pm on Tuesday 1st October, from McCarthys Funeral Parlour to Holy Trinity Parish Church Fethard. Burial took place in Calvary Cemetery following 11am Requiem Mass on Wednesday.

MARRIED RECENTLY
The wedding took place at Mogorban Church on Friday 27th September of Gillian, daughter of Mr Stanley and Mrs Annette Murphy, Main Street, Fethard to Peter Collier, Meath.
The wedding took place at Cloneen Church on Friday 27th September of Ena, daughter of Mr John and Mrs Nora O’Meara, Milestown, to Michael Dunphy, Mullinahone.

FETHARD GAA CLUB
The Intermediate hurling south semifinal takes place on next Sunday Oct 6th when we meet Ballybacon / Grange in Clonmel at 3pm.
Our Lotto jackpot of €5,600 was not won. We had five ‘match threes’ who won €30 each: John Butler (Rosegreen), Breda O’Loughlin (Grawn), Nuala McCormack (c/o Erin Foods), Mark Maguire (Grangemockler), and Joe Grant (11 Tirry Park). The €50 lucky dip goes to Christopher Doyle (66 Woodvale Walk).
Our deepest sympathies are at this time with the Butler (family) Garrinch on their recent bereavement.

We record the death of Mrs Elsie Butler, Garrinch, Fethard, who died on Saturday 28th September. Removal took place at 7 pm on Sunday 29th September, from McCarthys Funeral Parlour to Holy Trinity Parish Church Fethard. Burial took place in Calvary Cemetery following 11am Requiem Mass on Monday.

LIFE BEGINS AT 78

Pat (Rathcoole) and Mary Hayes (nee Anglim, Knockelly) sent us this photograph taken on the site of their new home in Australia. They have moved to the Granite Belt, Australia, to be near their daughters. They are surrounded by vineyards, orchards and national parks.

FETHARD & KILLUSTY COMMUNITY CENTRE

The new extension at Fethard Tirry Centre was used for the first time on Wednesday night 25th September by Fethard Bridge Club. The South Eastern Health Board have appointed a new supervisor for the Day Care Centre will the Centre will reopen when the position is filled.

COOLMOYNE CREAMERY CLOSED

Coolmoyne Creamery, closed its doors for good on Friday, 27th September 2002 after 108 years service to the community. The occasion was marked by inviting past workers and neighbours for refreshments. Any queries will now be handled by the Fethard Glanbia Branch. Tel: 052 31108 or 087 6272009.
Congratulations to Joe Keane, formerly from The Green, who was appointed Creamery Manager at Glanbia, Ballingarry.

FETHARD & KILLUSTY COMMUNITY LOTTO

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PLAN
The Fethard & Killusty Community Council, following discussions with the County Council Planning Department, are preparing a community development plan for inclusion in the draft development plan for Fethard due to be published next year. The object is to identify the needs of the community and the needs of local organisations over the next 5 to 10 years. When this is completed the Community Council and the County Council will be in a stronger position to implement these plans in future development and planning applications for the area. Some of the items identified so far are:

• Extra playing facilities for sporting organisations,
• Serviced sites for private housing developments,
• A circular walking route safe for pedestrians around the outskirts of Fethard,
• Using our public buildings to their full potential,
• Promoting business in Fethard

The Community Council have prepared their initial suggestions in a document that will be posted to local organisations asking for their additional suggestions that will service the needs of their own organisation over the next 5 years. Individuals are also invited to make their own suggestions. Copies of the document are available at the Community Information Office in Barrack Street. A draft community development plan will be prepared from the feedback received before 31st October 2002. This plan will be presented at a public meeting mid-October where corrections and omissions will be noted before the plan is finally submitted to the County Council Planning Office for their consideration.

ROAD SURFACING

The resurfacing of Rocklow Road commenced last week by the very efficient and obliging County Council workers with road resurfacing contractors Kellys of Fantane. Disruption was kept to a minimum on this very busy road which services a doctors surgery, three schools and a community playgroup every day. The work should be completed as soon as the surface water levels are catered for with the installation of additional shores.

SURFACE WATER
Following representations made by Councillor John Fahey, Tipperary County Council will provide gullies to alleviate the problem of surface water at the frontage of Calvary Cemetery.

MILWAUKEE HURLING
We have had a most interesting reply to the recent article on hurling in Milwaukee. Bar tender Tom Mills of Irish descent became enthralled with the game of hurling on a visit to Ireland in 1996. Following his return to the USA Midwest, he formed a club which now has 160 members. A lot of guys from ice-hockey and baseball backgrounds pick up the basics of the game within a match or two. They say that hurling beats baseball and hockey hands down! They now have eight teams playing off a league and hope to have a team of almost all American born players strong enough to visit Ireland in the fall of 2003. Who knows, they may include Fethard on their itinerary, as their only Irish born player at the moment is Fethard’s Pat Burke.

LEVEL CROSSING
Fethard’s pedestrian crossing is still causing ongoing problems and complaints from both pedestrians and motorists. Pedestrians claim that some motorists just will not stop when pedestrians are using the crossing. Motorists state that some pedestrians walk directly onto the crossing without any indication or signal of their intention to do so. Motorists also state that driving up Main Street, their view of the crossing is often obstructed by parked vehicles.
However, plans are believed to be in hand to have the crossing upgraded to a push-button green-man crossing. This will ensure that a pedestrian wishing to use the crossing, on pressing the button will change the amber light to red, thereby obliging motorists to stop. Motorists will have ample view of the red light. Let us hope this will solve the problem once and for all!

FETHARD GAA CLUB
Our opponents in the senior football county quarter finals draw should be known by this weekend. The intermediate hurling south semifinal draw should also be known on Sunday evening. The club is also in the county senior football league. We have no further involvement in any other competition. Club honours to date for this year are, under 21 A football south and county champions, and senior football south champions.
Our lotto jackpot €5,500 was not won. We had one match three winner who received €150 — Anton Denmead (Rathkeevin, Clerihan) .Our €50 lucky dip winner was Frank Burke (Main Street). The numbers drawn were 4, 14 ,17 and 18.
Our sympathies are at this time with the family of Seamus Cummins, Burke Street, following their recent bereavement.

FETHARD / AUSTRALIAN WEDDING
The wedding took place in St. Cecelia’s Church, Hamilton, Brisbane, Australia, of Thomas, son of Mr and Mrs Michael Meehan, Lismortagh, Fethard, to Ms Suzie Drake, Hamilton. A large number of family members travelled to Brisbane for the wedding and to join in the celebrations afterwards in the Sheraton Hotel, Hamilton.
Thomas was very well known in Tipperary farming circles prior to emigrating. A skilled and very fast sheep shearer in Tipperary, his services and skill in this annual operation on Tipperary sheep farms was very much sought after. We wonder did he avail of the opportunity to develop his proficiency in this field even further in the land of millions of sheep. Best wishes and best regards from his many friends in the area to Thomas and his new bride.

DIED SUDDENLY

We record the death of Seamus Cummins, Burke Street, who died suddenly on Saturday evening, 21st September. Fethard was grief stricken on Saturday night following the news of the death of popular local resident Seamus Cummins, Burke Street. Rated a most careful and competent driver, it is believed that Seamus took suddenly ill while driving home from Clonmel, and died where his car stopped by the roadside at Lakefield, two miles outside Fethard. Sincere sympathy is extended to his wife Teresa, daughters Mary and Gráinne, sons, Johnny and Vincent.

Removal took place from McCarthy's Funeral Parlour at 6.45pm on Monday 23rd September, to Holy Trinity Parish Church Fethard. Burial took place at Calvary Cemetery following Requiem Mass at 11am on Tuesday.

DIED RECENTLY
We record the death of Peggy Martin (nee Marnell), Coolmoyne. Burial took place in Calvary Cemetery on Saturday 21st September following 11am Mass at Holy Trinity Church Fethard.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
The local Conference of St. Vincent De Paul wish to announce that they are renewing, this year, their support /help scheme for third level education. Anybody who has a son /daughter at a third level college, or just about to start, should contact any member of the conference as soon as possible if they wish to take part in the scheme.

The Annual General Meeting of Fethard & Killusty Community Council will take place on Tuesday 15th October, 2002, in the Tirry Community Centre at 8.30pm. All are welcome to attend.

CULCHIE FESTIVAL

Preparations are currently being made for the Annual National Culchie Festival, which will take place in Fethard next month, bank holiday weekend 26th and 27th October. Last year’s winner was Ken Lee from Killusty who took over the crown from another local winner, Brendan Morrissey, Cashel Road, Fethard. Maybe the parish will make it a hat-trick this year!
