KILLUSTY PONY SHOW RESULTS 2002
The Committee of Killusty Pony Show were very fortunate on Show Day, Saturday 6th July, that the only summer storm in the area was the pony named Ardfry Summerstorm. Given the hazardous weather conditions to date in the Showing season it was a relief to all concerned that it was virtually dry all day. The atmosphere as a result was second to none and all appeared to go home happy.

RACING PIGEON FOUND

The South Tipperary Anti-Incinerator Campaign held their first major fundraiser, a night at the dogs, at Thurles Greyhound Track on Saturday 27th July. Campaign chairman, Seamus Hayes, states:
"The campaign is a little over two months old and the response we have had is beyond all expectations. 20,000 people have signed petitions, there are hundreds of objections lodged with An Bord Pleanála and people have been most generous with their time and money. It would be impossible to begin to thank everyone who has helped, but they should know that it is very much appreciated.
We need all the support we can get. We know that the people of South Tipperary do not want to see their health and livelihoods threatened by a meat and bone meal incinerator at Rosegreen. It is the wrong place; National By-Products are the wrong people; and incineration is the wrong process. Together we can ensure that it does not happen."

The wedding took place recently at Gougane Barra Church, Co. Cork, of Mary Lou, daughter of Mr P.J. and the late Mrs Betty Holohan, Abbey Street, Fethard, to Signor Tersten Edvar, Milan.

LOCAL BEAUTY
Congratulations to Ms Irene Maher, Rathmacarthy, Tullamaine, winner of the recent ‘Queen of the Suir 2002’ title.

DIED RECENTLY
The death has occurred of Mr Jimmy Phelan, Mocklershill. The late Jimmy Phelan worked as an insurance agent in Fethard and will also be remembered by old time patrons as one of the best ballroom dancers to grace the maple floor of Fethard Town Hall in the ‘Twilight Serenaders’ era. Interment took place in Moyglass.

FETHARD GAA NOTES
In the county intermediate hurling league quarter final our opponents are Eire Óg (Annacarty) in Golden on Tuesday 6th August at 7.15pm and on Sunday 3rd August we play Cahir in Clonmel in the south championship as a curtain raiser to the senior game.
In the minor hurling ‘b’ championship played on Wednesday 24th July in Cloneen, we lost out to Carrick Davins on a scoreline of, Carrick: 1-12 (1-10), Fethard 0-6 (0-0). The team was: Keith Lawrence, Darragh Corbett, Alan Burke, Ed Allen, Gavin Ahearne, Shane Walsh 0-2f, Michael Lawrence, Jamie McCormack 0-1, Darren O’Meara, Ronan O’Meara, Michael Dillon 0-3 (If), Owen Maher, Mike Kelly, Ronan Maher, William Doyle. Subs used: Johnny Leahy, Liam Frewen and Paul Kenny. Our next match is on Wednesday 7th August in Ned Hall Park (Clonmel) against Newcastle.
On Thursday 25th July in Clonmel, we lost our last chance in the intermediate football championship for this year on a scoreline Fethard 1-5 (0-1), Kilsheelan 0-12 (0-6). The team was: Tommy Gahan, Nicky Murphy, Michael Ryan, Philly Prout, Philly Croke, Shay Ryan, Ian Kenrick, Owen Doyle 0-1, Kevin O’Donnell, Martin Coen 1-3, John Hurley, Chris Coen, Johnny Neville 0-1, Michael O’Riordan and Brendan Brett. Our remaining games are in the South League.
In junior ‘b’ hurling on Friday 26th July, in Fethard, we lost to Saint Marys on a scoreline of 2-10 (0-4), to Fethard’s 1-9 (0-5). The team was: Stephen McCormack, Ian Kenrick, Peter Nolan, Philly Prout, John Hanrahan, Liam Treacy 0-3 (2f), Philly Croke, Kenneth Byrne 0-1, Ronan Maher, Brendan Doyle 0-1, Johnny Neville 1-0, John Noonan 0-2 F, Paddy Cooney 0-1, Garreth Byrne 0-1 and John Fitzgerald. Sub used was Alan O’Meara.
Well done to our players on the county senior football team: Damien Byrne, Willie Morrissey and Miceál Spillane who gave of there best during the championship campaign. Better luck next year!

GOLF CLASSIC FOR DAY CARE CENTRE
A Golf Classic in aid of the new extension to Fethard and District Day Care Centre will be held in Slievenamon Golf Club weekending 30th and 31st August. The committee ask for your support by sponsorship of one of the following: Team of 4 sponsorship €100, Green Sponsorship €50 and Tee sponsorship €25. COMMUNITY COUNCIL NEWS
The Community Council are now well advanced in their building of an extension to Fethard and District Day Care Centre. Plans to fit out the new downstairs Community Office and kitchen for Meals and Wheels are now underway.
The Town Wall Lights are currently being replaced and fitted with protective grills. We expect them to be connected and turned on when this work is completed.
Representatives from Christmas Light suppliers were currently in Fethard to give an estimate for adding extra lights for this years festive season. For environmental reasons, we are also planning to plant a permanent Christmas Tree in the Square. The practicalities of this are currently being discussed with South Tipperary County Council engineer, Jonathan Cooney.
The Pound gate by the Town Wall has been locked as it was becoming unsightly with litter collecting inside the walls. We would like to thank the local County Council for organising this and supplying keys to the Fethard Historical Society and Community Council. If anyone needs to visit The Pound, a key will be available from the above.
Representatives of the Community Council recently met with the South Tipperary County Council Planning Officer, Pat Slattery, and Housing Engineer, John Moloney, to discuss the provision of a community playing field in Fethard. The results were very positive and it was decided to have a follow up meeting will take place after we make a formal plan of where facilities, walkways and housing plans for the future should be implemented in the Fethard Development Draft Plan due to be published next year. The next Fethard Development Plan will be completed in 2004 and apply to the following five years. The proposed community field would service athletics, rugby, soccer and training for other sports. The Community Council will contact local organisations in the near future to collect their ideas before the next meeting with the County Council officials.
The committee would like to thank all who support our Community Lotto every week. Recent contributions were made towards the annual insurance costs for Woodvale Walk Residents Association and the purchase of the Convent hall for community use. The Convent Hall was purchased at a total cost of €69,800 (£55,000). We are happy to say that, due to the Community Lotto, the balance owed is now down to €12,000.
New members are always welcome to join the Community Council. Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday 13th August.

EAMON'S SURPRISE BIRTHDAY PARTY

"Greetings from New York. We just returned from a great visit to Fethard & Killenaule. We had a great night at Eamon's Surprise 50th Birthday party held on July 3rd at the Slievenamon Golf Club. What a lovely place to have a party. We had all the family home this time and the three girls enjoyed getting together with their aunts and cousins. There were over 85 people there. His aunt Eileen came from Cavan with his cousin Helen. His cousin, Penny Matrin from Wexford, his friends Mike & Mary Griffin travelled from Galway and his Brother John and friends from Cork. Family and friends from Fethard, Moyglass, Clonmel, Killenaule were well represented by the Murphy family in-laws. Richie Cummins organised the DJ and was a big help in the organising of the surprise party.
Our daughter Caroline spend 2 weeks at the American College Dublin and 2 weeks in Italy this summer . She has lots of memories of her stay in Ireland. Thanks again and keep up the good work, Bernie."

The next meeting of Fethard Historical Society will take place on Tuesday 30th July at 8.30pm in the Abymill Theatre. All members welcome.

SINEAD'S KILLER CHARGED

Sinead Healy (26) and her killer, Kenneth Lynch (33).

Kenneth Lynch, who murdered his girlfriend, pretty Sinead Healy formerly from Fethard, after a furious row at her London home was jailed for life on Wednesday 17th July. Lynch attacked Sinead on October 18, 2000. At the time of the killing he was on a four-day period of home leave from Springhill Prison in England where he was serving a sentence for handling stolen computers.

STEVIE'S TRIP ON HORSEBACK

Steven O'Connor, formerly from Kiltinan, set off from Andalucia in southern Spain, in the middle of May, 2002, on a marathon solo, horse-back ride. His intent is to travel through Spain, Portugal and France to England and Wales and finally, if all goes well, back to Ireland in September.
