DIED RECENTLY
We record the death of Catherine (Kitty) Lyttleton, Mockler's Terrace, Fethard, who died on Thursday 27th February. Remains left McCarthy's Funeral Parlour at 7pm on Friday 28th February for Holy Trinity Parish Church Fethard. Burial takes place at Calvary Cemetery following 11am Mass on Saturday.
FETHARD ATHLETIC CLUB
Training continues in preparation for our competitive outing to the Primary Schools Track and Field Competition in Clonmel on the 9th and 10th April, followed by the County Indoor Championships on Sunday 13th April and the County Track & Field Championships on the 10th and 11th May. Affiliation fees of €10 are now due. Please pay these fees as soon as possible as we need money to help defray the day-to-day running costs of the club.
New members are also very welcome to start preparing for the upcoming track season. Training sessions take place twice weekly at the GAA field on Monday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 7.30pm. The club intends to move training to the new community sports field when the clocks go back at the end of March. Please bring along a copy of your birth certificate to our next training session.

DRAMA GROUP
The Fionn McCumhaill Players, Cloneen, present John B Keane’s play, ‘Many Young Men of Twenty’ on Friday 7th, Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th March in Cloneen Hall. The very aptly named society being in such close proximity to Slievenamon the legendary seal of Fionn, have been in rehearsal since early January under producer Anne Williamson. The production features a gallery of local talent, which includes, we are informed, a special interest from Fethard. Remember the dates for your diary! Booking at 052 53376. Curtain 8.15pm. HUNTING NEWS
The hunting season is now drawing rapidly to a close. The season just passed has not been the best in hunting terms. However, it is an oft quoted saying on the hunting scene, “There is no such thing as a bad days hunting, some dogs are just better than others!”
The Ballylusky Harriers meet on Sunday next, 2nd March in Cloneen at 12 noon and in Ballingarry on Sunday 9th March at the same time.
FIRST ATM MACHINE IN FETHARD
The long wait for an ATM Machine in Fethard ended on 26th February, when Bank of Ireland installed an instore machine in Kenny's Centra Foodmarket, The Green. FETHARD GAA CLUB
Our community sports lotto jackpot €7,400 was not won. The numbers drawn were 1, 3, 11 and 13. We had one ‘match three’ winner: €150 to Sports Centre, c/o Fethard GAA. Our €50 lucky dip winner was Aisling Aherne (Monroe, Rocklow, Fethard).
Our Dinner Dance takes place on Saturday 1st March. We will make medal presentations for 2002 football, under 21 A south and county, senior south, south intermediate hurling. We will also honour the county/south senior football champions of 1954 and 1957. All tickets to be collected before Monday 24th February from dance committee members. Bus will leave Main Street at 7.30pm sharp. Price of bus is €5.
FETHARD JUVENILE CLUB
The Juvenile Club held their annual AGM and would like to thank those people who attended. There was a great turnout and we would like to welcome Liam Hayes as our new incoming chairman and bid a fond farewell to Michael O'Dwyer who stood as chairman for the Juvenile Club for the last 13 years. Thanks to Michael for all the hard work and dedication he has shown to the Juvenile Club and we are sure it wont be the last we see of him.
The football season has begun and there is training for under/16's on Wednesday nights at 6pm in the Barracks Field. Under/14 training takes place on Friday evenings at 6pm in the GAA Field. New members are welcome to attend these training sessions.
There is no date set yet for training for under/12's, under/10's and under/8's but they will be informed as soon as it has. New members are welcome to attend these training sessions. The Club is looking forward to a great and successful year.
LOCAL SUCCESS
Well done to local rider, Mr P.J. Colville, Spitalfield, who rode the Andrew Balding trained ‘Moor Lane’ to victory in the 3 mile handicap chase at Kempton Park, England on Friday last. This horse returned at the handsome price of 6/1 and P.J. has been booked to ride him again at the Cheltenham Festival in a couple of week’s time. P.J. was also one of the nominees by the ‘At The Races Panel’ for the ‘Ride of the Week’ competition.

FETHARD YOUTH CLUB
Fethard Youth Club had an interesting night out on Wednesday last when 24 members attended the Galloglass Theatre Company’s performance of ‘My Children, My Africa’, an eloquent and moving piece of theatre enhanced by the simplicity and directness of the language, the staging and the intimacy of the venue.
While it was enjoyed by the members of the club and the leaders, it became obvious that 'the play'/'drama' is not a genre that is understood for its own sake. While in discussion with the director and the outreach worker the consensus seemed to be that workshops before a performance would go a long way to counteract this. On a personal note I feel that what is missing is 'theatre in education'. Outreach groups need to be funded to go into schools, into the classrooms. Outreach theatre workers and actors need to work with teachers and students on another level - the level of theatre a genre. Don't wait until students are in exam classes and doing the plays for a paper - theatre needs to be explored as a living interactive work in which each member of the audience participates. Drama is such a useful method of exploring social, historical and other issues.
Small theatre groups cannot do this type of work without funding and I for one would be pleased to see some investment by the government/dept of education in theatre in education. The worst thing anyone can believe is that a play is just something to be read from a page.
On to this weeks club news. Saturday night went ahead as usual and we wish good luck and a great trip for all those students and club members travelling to Rome on the school trip this week.

FETHARD & KILLUSTY COMMUNITY GAMES
The AGM of Community Games took place in the Tirry Community Centre on Tuesday last, 18th February. Outgoing chairman Joe Keane welcomed everybody to the meeting and secretary Bernard Feery gave a very comprehensive report on the year’s happenings which were quite successful. The treasurer’s report also showed a healthy balance. We donated approximately €190 to various fund raising activities by other clubs in the area during the year. We are of the opinion that all clubs should network and support each other’s ventures.
We purchased two racehorses for the forthcoming Rugby Club’s Race Night on this Thursday night in McCarthys Hotel. One will run for the community games syndicate and the other is in the ownership of the newly formed Ladies Football Club. Hopefully they will increase some club finances. We would like to wish the best of luck to the Ladies Football Club which we understand is the first ever to be formed in Fethard.
It was provisionally decided to enter the following teams in this years community games events: U/10 GAA, U/13 Hurling, U/12 Girls GAA, U/13 Boys Indoor Soccer, U/12 Mixed Draughts, U/11 Rugby and U/11 Tag Rugby, U/12 Boys Soccer and U/16 Girls Volleyball. The individual events will include athletics, judo, swimming, art and model making. The closing date for entries for the area art and modelmaking event is Friday March 7th. All entries, together with fee of €1, will be collected in the schools on that date or if one is living in the parish and going to school elsewhere entry may be handed in to Helena O’Shea, The Valley. Mr and Mrs Magnier, Coolmore Stud, were complimented on their generosity in leasing a 6 acre field on the Kilknockin Road to the Fethard community to be developed as a multipurpose sports facility. This is a huge boost to the town and very much appreciated.

The County Finals of the Art & Modelmaking events will be held in Fethard Ballroom on Saturday, April 5th at 1pm.
Due to recent sponsorship by Coolmore Stud for a new set of County Tracksuits some of the old ones will be auctioned at the next County Board meeting in Horse & Jockey Inn on Tuesday, March 18th. Everybody is welcome to attend.

The Annual General Meeting of Fethard and District Day Care Centre will take place on Thursday 27th March at 6pm in the Tirry Community Centre. All are welcome.

2003 SPECIAL OLYMPICS

Cashel travelled to Fethard on last Sunday. It was the first match to be played in the new Community Field and there was a great atmosphere with a big crowd of supporters cheering the players on.
The under-8s beat Cashel 6-3 with the tries coming from Keith Bergin, Gavin Delaney, Gregory Henry and Colin Meagher who also played well. It was a well-played game of rugby and the team consisted of Keith Bergin, Cian O'Connell, Gavin Delaney, Gregory Henry, Luke Keating, Colin Meagher, Shane Power and Eoin Walsh.

The under-12s had a tough game of rugby resulted in a 7-3 defeat. The tries came from J.P. McGrath and Joe Kelly (2). The team was up at their try line a couple of times and a little more teamwork could have helped capitalise with a score.
Training continues as usual at 11 am on Saturdays and all players are asked to turn up. New players are always welcome.
MILITARY MATTERS
Capt. Tom Freyne, Grove Road, had the distinguished honour of being the first Irish Army Officer to be invited to ride at the great annual historic Military Meeting at Sandown racecourse. Captain Freyne rode ‘Viking Buoy’ for the Hon. Artillery Company. While not figuring in the frame, he successfully completed the stiff course and thoroughly enjoyed the historic experience.

TIPPERARY HUNT PONY CLUB CHARITY RIDE
Thomas Kearney and Pat Culligan from Fethard taking part in the recent Tipperary Hunt Cross Country Charity Ride in Killenaule. The Tipperary Pony Club with Charles Blackmore would like to thank all the landowners, sponsors, contributors, helpers and participants who came together to make the charity ride from Killenaule to Moyglass on the 26th January 2003 a great success. NO BADMINTON
Sad to note that Fethard Badminton Club, probably the oldest badminton club in the county, did not find it possible to field a team in this season’s County Tipperary Badminton Association’s leagues. Least we hope the lapse is only of a temporary nature as several locals have expressed an interest in playing the game for recreation. If anybody is interested in playing this year and reviving the club, please leave your names at the Community Information Office in Barrack Street. Tel: 052 31000.

It was not the easiest of victories for Killusty. They took the lead after fifteen minutes with a goal from Mark Carroll. Glen Villa equalised in the twenty-fifth minute with a goal from Peter Hanrahan. Glen Villa then took the lead five minutes before the interval when Peter Hanrahan got his second goal of the day to leave it 2-1 at half time. Killusty’s Shay Coen got the equaliser ten minutes into the second half to bring the game level once again. Ten minutes later Jimmy O’Meara got Killusty’s third. Fifteen minutes before time Patrick Hennessy was there for Glen Villa and made the game 3-3. This meant it was forced to go to extra time. After extra time the game was still level. Killusty won 9-8 on penalties.
PAT O’SHEA
It was great to see Pat O’Shea, former Fethard publican, looking so well on a recent visit to Fethard. Pat ran so many exciting and successful table quiz competitions in his pub, O’Shea’s Lounge, for various Fethard clubs and societies. Pat now resides in Thurles and commutes daily by train to Dublin where he works as an accountant. Sign of the times when Pat informs us he can reach his office quicker from Thurles than some of his colleagues who travel by car from places such as Swords adjacent to Dublin City.
SENIOR CITIZENS
Senior citizens who wish to go to Carne, Co. Wexford, on the St. Vincent De Paul sponsored holiday are asked to contact any member of the conference for an application form as soon as possible. The holiday dates are from June 7th to June 13th.
TOWN HALL RENOVATIONS
Sinead Carr, Housing Department, South Tipperary County Council, invited Fethard & Killusty Community Council to discuss the proposed funding plan for the renovation of Fethard Town Hall at the Council Offices on Friday 14th February. The Community Council met with Stephen Fallon, Conservation Officer, before Christmas and submitted a plan for the Town Hall with the hope of attracting 85% EU funding for any conservation work on the building. This is a unique chance of getting badly needed conservation work completed on the building with the added bonus of using the premises as a viable self-financing premises run by the community.
The County Council are willing to work with the community in preparing detailed plans and to make an estimated cost of the overall project. It will be then possible to decide how much money is available through funding and how much will need to be raised by the County Council and the Community.

MEMORIES
There was a good turn out on Saturday last of former friends and acquaintances of the late Frankie Rafferty whose ashes were interred in Calvary Cemetery following 11am Mass. Memories were recalled of days and a quality of life that are now gone and of songs that were sung in Fethard and London where Frankie’s lovely singing voice was greatly appreciated. Also recalled were the many races lost and won when Frankie was an apprentice and jockey with Major Vigors at Tullamaine Castle and Coolmore. May he rest in peace.
