GAA LOTTO JACKPOT WON

The GAA Community Sports Lotto Jackpot of €8,600 was won on Tuesday 6th May, by Joe Grant, Fr. Tirry Park, Fethard, at this week's draw held in McCarthy's Hotel. MARRIED RECENTLY
The wedding took place at Gougane Barra, Co. Cork, of Hilda, daughter of Gene and Arabella Walsh, Kilnockin, to Declan, son of David and Sheila O’Donnell, Coleman. The couple will spend their honeymoon in Brazil.

DIED RECENTLY
The death has occurred of Mrs Margaret Morrissey, Cloran. Interment took place in Cloneen Cemetery.

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations and a job ‘well done’ to Jonathon Cooney, Thomas Fitzgerald and the local County Council employees on completion of the new revised car parking and renovations outside Fethard GAA Sports Field. The new arrangements are more efficient and safer for car owners and pedestrians alike.

FETHARD YOUTH CLUB
The penultimate session of the 'Copping on' project was held at the club on last Saturday night. The other usual events went ahead as planned. Presently the club is winding down for the summer months and it must be admitted that we did miss the lads who are also joined Killusty Soccer Club and who were away in Peterborough this week. However, we hope they have a great time and do us all proud.
Next Saturday night will be the last night of the project and we will have a guest speaker to present the certificates in conjunction with our facilitator Noelle O'Dwyer.
This will be a night of celebrating many success and ventures and we are hoping to have group photographs of the soccer teams, the receivers of certs for the project, the leaders who have recently been awarded 'Volunteer Achievers' status, and possibly a sneak preview of our club's Student Liaison Officer, a direct link between the Youth Information Service and the Secondary School in Fethard. As said already . . .yet to be revealed.
Finally, a list of all interested parties has gone to the youth service with regard to maintaining our very strong European link. This is foreseen as cooperation in projects over the summer and beyond.
Remember the club is open next week 10th May and we look forward to seeing everyone there. (Especially for the photo shoot and to reception of your certs!)
We are also thinking of members who are preparing for their junior/leaving certs this year, in fact around three weeks time — remember it’s never too late to hit the books — you all still have time! Go for it !
If anyone out there is interested in becoming a leader please let us know or just turn up on Saturday night between 7.10pm and 9.10pm.
We also wish the best of luck to Bronagh Galvin who did us proud with our beauty course this year. Bronagh is opening her own salon in Clonmel next week. We only hope she will have time to do a follow up course in the autumn. Best of Luck Bronagh.

COMMUNITY GAMES
Fethard / Killusty area played the first round of the community games under/10 mixed football in the GAA Park, Fethard on Wednesday last. This was a very exciting game with the Fethard lads just snatching victory from Carrick-on-Suir in the last few minutes. In the first half Fethard opened the scoring with a point from Cathal Hurley. Aiden Ryan quickly followed up with a goal to give Carrick the lead. Ciarán O’Meara scored 2 points and Philip Maher scored a point but a goal from Jack Doherty saw Carrick with a 2 point lead at half time. In the second half Cathal Hurley scored another great point and Brian Healy pulled the match out of the fire with a fine goal minutes from the final whistle. All the boys played well and held Carrick scoreless in the second half. Final score was 1-5 to 2 goals. Fethard Team consisted of: Brian Delahunty (captain), Gerry Horan (goalie), Dylan Fitzgerald, Ronan Fitzgerald, Kieran Walsh, Donal Walsh, Ger Maher, Michael Smith, Gerard Gorey, Ciarán O’Meara, Ted Barrett, Gary Bradshaw, Dion Butler, Philip Maher, Brian Healy and Cathal Hurley. The match referee was John Hurley. The Carrick boys also played a great game and it was a lovely clean match and a fine example of football. Fethard will now play Cahir in the next round.

JUVENILE GAA NOTES
It was a busy week for the Juvenile Club with the U/10's kicking off with the first match of the Community Games. We played host to Carrick and played what has to be a game that will be hard to the match the excitement and determination.
Carrick came out and Fethard were down by two goals before the first half was finished and these young players came back and showed how determined they were not to be beaten. There were some brilliant performances by all members of the team but Ciaran O'Meara and Cathal Hurley scored some much needed points, the team were 1 point behind and could not break the Carrick defence, Brian Healy managed to break the defence and scored a goal putting Fethard two points in the lead. There were many times when it looked as if Carrick would break away and score but Fethard’s determination never broke and finally the whistle blew. They now go on to play Cahir in the next round and best of luck to the team, and to Michael, Tony and Frank - keep up the great work.
The under/12s finished their championship bid on Thursday last and unfortunately did not make it to the next round, better luck next time lads. Well done to Stephen and Martin for all the hard work and time put into this team.

FETHARD ATHLETIC CLUB

Fethard AC athlete Pat Heffernan (right) underlined his position as the county’s leading long distance athlete by taking the county road championship title at Dundrum. On his left is fellow club member Fintan Rice who finished 6th.

The wooded village of Dundrum was the venue for the county senior road race championships as the county’s top road racers toed the line at the start of the 10k course. Pre race favourite, Pat Heffernan underlined his position as the county’s leading long distance athlete by taking the county title in a most comprehensive fashion. The Ballyvaden man’s victory was all the more impressive as he had run a seven mile race in Waterford the previous evening, further enhancing his “tough as teak” reputation. In second place was Kenny Curran, Ballynonty with 3rd going to Tadhg Vaughan, Coolquill. Intermediate winner, Fintan Rice had an off form day to finish a disappointing 6th but nonetheless it was fantastic to see two Fethard runners in the top six of a senior championship race. Both athletes hope to be in action next weekend in Clonmel at the Annual Ballygowan 10k.
The spotlight now falls on our juveniles as they represent their club in the county track and field championships in Kilkenny on Saturday and Sunday 10th and 11th of May. A bus will leave on both mornings from outside the GAA field at 9.15 am.
The Community Games local athletics event takes place this Thursday evening 8th May in the new sports field at 6.30pm. This event is open to all children who reside in the parish.

FETHARD GAA CLUB
Our intermediate hurlers, on Sunday last 5th May, commenced there defence of the South Title with a very comprehensive victory over our near rivals Kilsheelan, on a score line Fethard 5-13 (1-6), Kilsheelan 0-11(0-4). Our six backs stood firm with Paul Fitzgerald excellent in goal, and Tomas Keane scoring three great points from 65s. At centerfield, P. J. and Miceál tipped the balance in our favour, while on the half-forward line, Cian Maher 0-1, Aiden Fitzgerald 0-1, Brian Coen 1-5 (4f), did a lot off the damage. The inside line were very effective in setting up the scores with Michael Dillon 2-2, Garreth Byrne, Owen Doyle 0-1 (until retirement injured), and John P Looby 0-2, causing plenty off problems for opposition backs.
The senior football south championship game against Clonmel Commercials takes place on this Sunday May 11th in Kilsheelan at 3.30pm, preceded by the minor ‘B’ football championship game where Fethard play Clonmel Og at 2pm.

Our Community Sports Lotto Jackpot of €8,500 was not won. The numbers drawn were 8, 11, 12 and 13. €150 went to Deirdre Dorney (57 Woodvale Walk). The €50 Lucky Dip winner was Michael Kendrick (Burke Street).

ST. PATRICK'S BOYS SCHOOL HURLING
Our under 12s Mini-Sevens Team played some brilliant hurling in Kilsheelan on Tuesday last to win the South Section of our competition. We played four games taking full honour's in all four and defeating Gael Scoil Cluain Meala in the final. Other schools involved were Mullinahone, Kilsheelan and Grangemockler.
Our team was Eoin O'Connell, Tom O'Connell, James Kelly, Darragh O'Dwyer, Jonathan Fleming, Adrian Lawrence and Ciaran Ryan. Each of the team performed exceptionally well and were ably assisted by our 3 super subs, Adam Lyons, Ben Walsh and Kevin Hayes. The supporters club of Jerome Ahearne and P.J. McGrath also contributed to the success.

HISTORICAL CAR TRIP FOR CHERNOBYL
The Fethard Historical Society and The Museum of Transport in Clonmel are jointly organising a ‘Vintage Car Trip and Picnic in the Country’ on Saturday evening, 10th May, beginning at 7.30pm. All proceeds from the evening are going to the Chernobyl Childrens Fund.
The all in cost for the Visit to Richmond Mill Museum, Vintage Car Trip and Picnic (supplied) in the country is €20 (individual) and €30 for a couple.

FETHARD & KILLUSTY LONDON REUNION
Anyone wishing to travel to Fethard & Killusty London Reunion on Saturday 7th June please give your names to Joan O’Donohoe at the Community Office, Fr. Tirry Centre, Tel: 052 31000. It is planned to leave Fethard on Friday 6th June and return on Sunday 8th June. We are currently checking travel prices and details will be available from the Community Office.
The reunion has being organised in London by Paul Looby (Tel: +44 (0) 1276 509926 or email: plooby@ntlworld.com) and will be held on Saturday 7th June 2003, from 5pm till late. There is a £7 admission charge per head to help defray costs.
The venue is The London Scotia Bar, 98 Bermondsey Street, London, SE1 3UB. Reception from 5pm, and a Barbecue timed for 6.30pm. Traditional band will provide music in the Pub from 8 till closing. Any musicians bring your instruments as jamming is definitely allowed. Good beers, caint, ceol agus craic go leor.

ABYMILL FIFTEENTH ANNIVERSARY CONCERT

The Abymill Theatre, first opened in May 1988, will celebrate its fifteenth anniversary with a Gala Concert on 9th May featuring, ‘Sopranos’ three of Ireland’s leading singers; The Gordonaires from Clonmel; and master of ceremonies Billy McLellan.
