One of the most popular playgrounds in the 1960's, for children from The Green and Burke Street, was the back of Kennedy's Garage where you had old cars and a ready made maze on the way through to Jack Kenrick's garden.

FETHARD JUVENILE FOOTBALL MARATHON
There will be a Monster Football Marathon/BBQ in the Fethard GAA Field on Sunday 11th August from 10am to 8pm followed by an over 40's football match. There are many fun activities planned for the day such as an under/5's Crèche Corner, Bouncy Castle, Shop, Pole Fighting, Sponge Throwing and these are just to name a few. Clubs from all areas are invited to register their teams, from under/8's to under/16's, with Caroline Sheehan Tel: (052) 32005 for a series of mixed challenge matches throughout the day. All teams are welcome to come along and join in the fun in our Football Marathon
Hurling training continues for under/12's on Monday evenings at 6pm and football training continues for under/10's to under/14's on Wednesday evenings at 7pm.
FETHARD GAA CLUB
In the senior football county championship, on Tuesday 30th July, we were defeated by Ardfinnan on a scoreline Fethard 0-6 (0-3), Ardfinnan 2-10 (1-7). The team was: P. Fitzgerald, Jimmy O’Meara, Michael Ahearne, Willie O’Meara, Willie Morrissey, Michael Quinlan, Stephen O’Donnell, Aiden Fitzgerald, Damien Byrne, Glen Burke 0-1, Miceál Spillane, Brian Coen 0-1, Carl Maher 0-3 (2f), John P. Looby, and Michael Dillon 0-1. Subs used were: Martin Coen, Tom Anglim, Cian Maher and Kenneth Byrne. Our only chance to stay in this competition is to win the South Championship.
In intermediate hurling, on Sunday 4th August, we lost to Cahir in Clonmel on a scoreline Fethard 1-12 (1-6), Cahir 2-12 (0-6). The team was: Owen Doyle, Shay Ryan, Stephen O’Donnell, David Flanagan, Michael Ahearne, Michael Quinlan, Tomas Keane, P J Ahearne, Cian Maher, J P Looby 0-3, Colin Allen 0-6 (3f), Miceál Spillane 1-2, Ciaran Treacy 0-1, Michael Ryan and Jamie McCormack. Subs used were: Shane Walsh, Alan Phelan, Willie Morrissey, Michael Dillon and Glen Burke.
In the south championship league on Tuesday 6th August, we played the quarter final of the County League in New Inn.
We play Killenaule in the under 21 ‘A’ hurling south semi-final on this Sunday 11th August, in Monroe at 7pm.
Our lotto jackpot of €4,800 was not won. We had 4 match three winners who received €40 each: Martin Burke (Main St), Bernie Byrne (Killusty), Tom Ryan (46 St Pats Place) and John O’Riordan (Kerry St). Our €50 Lucky Dip winner was Margaret Napier (15 Slievenamon Close).
The club would like to wish Johnny Farrell (the first Fethard man to win a minor All Ireland hurling medal 1933) a speedy recovery after his recent illness.
The club would like to convey our deepest sympathy at this time to the families of David and John Phelan, Baptistgrange, and Jim O’Keeffe, formerly of Kiltinan on their recent bereavements.

DIED RECENTLY
 The death has occurred on Tuesday 6th August of local building contractor, Mr John Harrington, Abbey Street, Fethard. Remains left his residence on Wednesday evening for the Augustinian Abbey at 7.45pm.
Burial took place in Calvary Cemetery on Thursday morning following 11am Mass.
 The death has occurred on Tuesday 6th August of James 'Shem' Danagher, 12 Congress Terrace, Fethard. Remains left McCarthy's Funeral Parlour at 6.30pm for Holy Trinity Church Fethard.
Burial tooks place on Thursday in Calvary Cemetery following 12.30pm Mass

POET JIM O’KEEFFE DIES
The death has occurred in Wexford of Mr James ‘Jim’ O’Keeffe, Kilmore Quay, and Kiltinan. The late Jim O’Keeffe led a most adventurous life. He worked on many motorway constructions and building sites in England and sailed many times to all parts of the world during his career as a sailor and steward on the luxury ocean going lines.
Taking early retirement, he returned to his native Fethard, where he wrote an account of his very varied life style in verse. He called his book of poems, which had a very successful launch at the Abymill Theatre, ‘Odes of a Killusty Emigrant’. The book of Jim's poems is still very popular and available locally. Restless as ever, a few short years ago he sold his house at Kiltinan and took up residence at Kilmore Quay, Wexford, where he died on Monday 5th August. He certainly packed a lot of living into his 66 years and this excerpt from one of his last poems called ‘The Barracks’ may have been his last goodbye to the place of his birth.
“The time has come for me to go, so I will move along.
I leave behind The Barracks, and dear old Slievenamon.
Farewell to the big yellow signpost, which said seven miles to Clonmel.
Farewell to my home on the crossroads, the place that I love so well."
Jim’s remains will return to England for burial. May he rest in peace.
MARRIED RECENTLY
The wedding took place in Fethard Parish Church on Saturday 3rd August of Martina, daughter of Mr David and Mrs Bridget Morrissey, St. Patrick’s Place, to Mr James Cowlard, Penge, London.
Best wishes from his footballing contemporaries in Fethard, to Criostóir McGrath, Clonmel Commercials, and Ms Linda O’Connell, Moyglass, whose wedding took place in Moyglass Church on Thursday 1st August.
TWO KILLED
The late David and John Phelan, Baptistgrange, Lisronagh.
Two brothers, John (26) and David Phelan (24), Baptistgrange, Fethard, were killed shortly after 8pm on Sunday night 4th August, when their motorbike was involved in a collision with a car at the top of Market Hill (The Commons), Fethard. The lady driver of the car was taken to hospital where she is being treated for her injuries.
Remains left O'Donoghue's Funeral Parlour, Clonmel, at 7.30pm on Tuesday 6th August for St. John the Baptist Church, Lisronagh. Burial took place in the adjoining cemetery following 11am Mass on Wednesday. The Phelan brothers were very well known in the town, two extremely popular young men who were held in the highest esteem by all who knew them. Sincere sympathy is extended to their parents Billy and Diana and family.
RECENT ENGAGEMENTS
Congratulations to Lisa Rice, Brookhill, and Kari Laaksonen, who announced their engagement last weekend. Lisa and Kari got engaged while on holiday in Finland.
Congratulations also to Patrick Burke, Farranshea, and Alicia Hitzler, who got engaged in Milwaukee, USA. The couple are planning to come home to Fethard next April to celebrate their wedding with family and friends.
KILLUSTY SOCCER CLUB
The AGM of Killusty F.C. will take place in Killusty Sports Grounds on Thursday 8th August at 8.30pm. All are welcome.
The youths soccer team will resume training on 8th August at 7pm sharp. Boys and girls playing the under-12 mixed soccer summer league will resume on Sunday evening, 4th August, at 6.30pm. A penalty shoot-out will also take place for all age groups up to under-12.
POPULATION DECREASE
The results of the Census of Population taken at the end of April last show that Fethard has fallen by 6.3%. The only other area to show a decline in population in this area was Tipperary Town at 1.7%.
THE ROAD TO McCARTHY
The best selling UK author, Pete McCarthy, included Fethard as one of his stops in his new book 'The Road to McCarthy'.
The author tells of how he happens to find McCarthy's Bar on Main Street, Fethard, and of his enlightening meeting with Jimmy 'Buck' Ryan from Watergate.
KILLUSTY PONY SHOW RESULTS 2002
The Committee of Killusty Pony Show were very fortunate on Show Day, Saturday 6th July, that the only summer storm in the area was the pony named Ardfry Summerstorm. Given the hazardous weather conditions to date in the Showing season it was a relief to all concerned that it was virtually dry all day. The atmosphere as a result was second to none and all appeared to go home happy.

The South Tipperary Anti-Incinerator Campaign held their first major fundraiser, a night at the dogs, at Thurles Greyhound Track on Saturday 27th July. Campaign chairman, Seamus Hayes, states:
"The campaign is a little over two months old and the response we have had is beyond all expectations. 20,000 people have signed petitions, there are hundreds of objections lodged with An Bord Pleanála and people have been most generous with their time and money. It would be impossible to begin to thank everyone who has helped, but they should know that it is very much appreciated.
We need all the support we can get. We know that the people of South Tipperary do not want to see their health and livelihoods threatened by a meat and bone meal incinerator at Rosegreen. It is the wrong place; National By-Products are the wrong people; and incineration is the wrong process. Together we can ensure that it does not happen."
