FETHARD GAA CLUB
On Saturday 7th September, we received a walkover against Carrick Davins in intermediate hurling, which leaves us with 9 points out of a possible 12 to date.
In junior b football on Wednesday 4th September, we recorded our first victory on a scoreline, Fethard 1-11 (1-7), Grangemockler 1-7 (0-3). The team was: John Fitzgerald, Peter Nolan, Diarmuid Burke, Donny Tobin, Emmet Burke, Willie Quigley, Paul Hackett, Colm Coen 1-3 (2f, Garreth Byrne, John Noonan 0-2, David Flanagan 0-1, John Hanrahan 0-1, Paul McDonald, Shay Coen 0-3, and M J Croke 0-1. The subs were: Alan O’Meara, Aiden Phelan, Gerry Murphy, Jonathan Spillane, and Owen Whyte. On Wednesday 11th September we are due to play Killenaule in Cloneen.
Our lotto jackpot of €5,300 was not won. The numbers drawn were 1, 17, 23 and 24. We had two match three winners who received €75 each — Margaret Bradshaw (18 Woodvale Walk), and James Hackett (Jnr) (c/o Strylea). Our €50 Lucky Dip winner was Frankie Napier (15 Slievenamon Close).

MARRIED RECENTLY
The wedding took place on Saturday 7th September in Holy Trinity Parish Church, Fethard, of Martina, daughter of Mrs Marie and Mr Pat Delaney, Redcity, to James Grimes, Cabinteeley, Dublin 18.
The wedding took place on Sunday 8th September in The Church of the Sacred Heart Killusty, of Áine, daughter of Mrs Mary and Mr Liam Cloonan, Killenaule Road, Fethard, to Mark Sadler, Windsor, Berkshire, Newport, England.

FETHARD FOOTBALL TRUE
All true followers of Fethard football will be pleased to read in the Nationalist Newspaper match report on the South Tipp Senior Football Final, that Fethard achieved victory without “resorting to underhand tactics”. This is the traditional style of football that has brought so many divisional titles to the Friary town. It was great to see the tradition being maintained and acknowledged. The report recalls to those of us associated with Fethard football, the oft-reported words of very long time club chairman, the late John Keating, “Play the game Fethard, honour before honours!”

CHRISTMAS TREE FOR SQUARE
A meeting was held between members of the Fethard & Killusty Community Council, Jonathan Cooney, South Tipperary County Council engineer; and Christy Fitzgerald, tree specialist with Coolmore Stud, to discuss the practicalities of planting an environmentally friendly permanent Christmas Tree in The Square, Fethard. Following a very informative meeting on site and investigating similar sized trees used for replanting, it was decided to go ahead with the project in November. Coolmore Stud have kindly agreed to supply the tree, the County Council under the supervision of Thomas Fitzgerald will supply the labour and the Fethard & Killusty Community Council will supply the materials. The Community Council will also purchase additional seasonal lighting for the streets this year.

The highlight of the soccer season in Killusty took place on Sunday 8th September, when Killusty F.C. held the sixth annual ‘Pat Aylward Memorial Shield and Trophy Competition’, confined to juvenile players under/14. AMUSEMENTS AT WOODVALE WALK

The back-to-school blues have been somewhat eased by the arrival of the most elaborate travelling amusement show across the road from Woodvale Walk on the Killenaule Road. For the past few nights hundreds of children and adults have turned up to take part in the fun. These photographs were taken on Saturday 7th September.

MEMORIAL SERVICE FOR JIM O'KEEFFE
A memorial service for the late Jim O'Keeffe, formerly from Kiltinan, will take place on Saturday 21st September at 7pm in the Parish Church, Kilmore Quay, Co. Wexford. All are welcome to attend.

Johnny Ward, Lord rest him, used to say that the part of a race meeting was shaving before he left. Well the best part of the County Football Final played at Cashel on Sunday 2nd October, 1983, for these Fethard supporters was a drink before they set off for the match. YANKEE HURLER

Milwaukee would not be recognised as one of the chief centres in the USA for Irish emigrants. However, at a recent three-day Irish cultural festival called ‘Irish Fest’, a hurling team representing Milwaukee took part. The only non-native American on the team was Pat Burke, Farranshea, Fethard. The other members of the team, which included two lady members, were all American born and well-known performers in American sports such as American Football, Baseball, Basketball etc. Guests of honour at the ‘Irish Fest’ were the famous Kilfenora Céilí Band from County Clare.

These photographs, taken at this years Irish Fest, were sent to us by Brian Connors whose great-grandfather William O'Connor was born in 1822 at Ballyvadin, Fethard and emigrated to Wisconsin where Brian now lives with his family.

ICA GUILD
The next meeting of Fethard Irish Countrywoman’s Association will be held on Tuesday 10th September in the ICA Hall. Outstanding fees are now due and can be paid on the night. A guest speaker will attend. New members are always welcome to come along. Yoga classes will recommence on Thursday 12th September.

FETHARD COMMUNITY PLAYGROUP
Fethard Community Playgroup has now reopened from 9.30am to 12.30 from Monday to Friday. The fee per child per session is €4 and enrolments are now welcome. Parents are requested to pay for their child’s days even if unable to attend for any reason as annual running costs and fees are calculated on a full attendance. A limited number of places are available so if your child is missing for more than two weeks and no payment has been made, your child’s place will be given to the next child on the waiting list. Please let us know in advance if your child will be unavailable to attend for a prolonged period so we can allocate the place temporarily to another child. We hope your child will enjoy their time in our playgroup and if you need further information please telephone 052 32316 or call upstairs to the Health Centre at Rocklow Road.

HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Fethard Historical Society would like to remind people that from Sunday 1st September to Sunday 8th September is Heritage Week and most Duchas castles, gardens and parks will have free access for the week. More detailed information is available from The Tirry Community Office in Barrack Street. Tel: 053 31000.
Some members of the Fethard Historical Society plan to travel to Kilkenny Castle on Sunday 8th September to avail of the free special program of events. People to make their own travel arrangements.

FETHARD & KILLUSTY COMMUNITY COUNCIL
The next meeting of Fethard & Killusty Community Council will take place on Tuesday 10th September at 8.30pm in the Tirry Community Centre.

FETHARD BRIDGE CLUB
The new season of bridge commences on Wednesday 11th September at 7.30pm in the ICA Hall. This is a temporary venue until work on the Tirry Centre is completed. New members are welcome to come along and we look forward to seeing old and new members back on the 11th September.
