FETHARD GAA CLUB
On Sunday 6th October we overcame Ballybacon/Grange in intermediate hurling (after 7 years of trying to beat them), to reach the south final where we will now meet either Cahir or Kilsheelan. The final score was, Fethard 1-17 (1-10), Ballybacon 0-13 (0-6). The team was: Paul Fitzgerald, Shay Ryan, Michael Ryan, Willie Morrissey, Kevin O’Donnell, Stephen O’Donnell, Michael Ahearne, P. J. Ahearne, Cian Maher 0-1, John P Looby 0-1, Miceál Spillane 0-3, Brian Coen, Ciarán Treacy 0-1, Tomas Keane 0-1, Colin Allen 1-8 (8f). Subs used were: Damien Byrne 0-2, Owen Doyle, Alan Phelan and David Flanagan. Other subs were: Michael Dillon, William Delaney, Shane Walsh and Jamie McCormack.
The senior football quarterfinals are due to start on this Saturday October 12th. Please check sports page in 'The Nationalist' for fixture.
Our lotto jackpot of €5,700 was not won so five ‘match threes’ were drawn and each of the following received €30: Patricia Breen (Back Green), Teresa Roche (22 Woodvale Walk), Dick O’Brien (Main St), Josie Fitzgerald (Kiltinan), and Tossie Lawton (St Patrick Plc). The €50 ‘Lucky Dip’ was won by Noelle Doyle (St Pats Place). The numbers drawn were 3, 9, 11 and 12.

LOCAL CULCHIE CHOSEN
The annual Original Culchie Festival takes place once again in Fethard on the bank-holiday weekend of 25th to 28th October. Owen Whyte, Main Street, was selected to be the Fethard representative at the local Culchie selection heat at Bob Grants on Saturday night last. Eoin had very strong competition for the title of Fethard Culchie and his success may be put in its proper prospective by the fact he was elected by one postal vote from County Kerry.

The following photographs were sent to us by June Howard, New York. Joan's husband's great grandmother, Elizabeth Gleeson, married John Crean from Fethard. After he died she then married a John or Michael Connolly. Their daughter, Elizabeth Bridget Connolly, married Richard Carey and moved to the USA. They all came from Fethard except Carey, he came from Kilmallock.

	This is a picture taken in 1935 - in N.Y. Liz (Elizabeth) Crean, born in Fethard, in 1899 ( Jim Crean's sister), her aunt Marie Crean Quirk ( of Fethard) and Clara (Claire) Carey Howard and her 2 daughters.
	This is a picture of Jim Crean of Fethard (died 1983), married Nora McCarthy. He is the nephew of Maria Crean Quirk (her brothers son).
	This is an interesting picture of two Fethard girls who married two Fethard men. They came over on the boat together and remained friends until their death. Their descendents and our family are still continuing the friendship, like we were cousins! Maria Crean Quirk is one, she married James Quirk, he was born in 1870. Elizabeth Fitzpatrick, married Patrick J. Heffernan of Fethard.
	This is Maria Crean Quirk with two of her great grand nieces, Marge and Claire Howard. Taken in Brewster, N.Y., in 1934.
	This is a picture of Maria Crean, born in Fethard, on Nov. 28, 1869 and baptized in the church of Fethard. God parents were Pat Shea and Mary Ann Gleason. Her parents were John Crean & Lizzy Hackett.

FETHARD HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Noreen Higgins, author of 'Tipperary's Tithe War 1830-1838', will talk on that subject on Friday 18th October, at 8.30pm in the Abymill Theatre. As might be expected Fethard and Fethard people were' stuck in the middle of it, and Noreen Higgins, a teacher from West Tipperary, will concentrate in particular on the activities in this part of the county. The Tithe War was the name given to the resistance by the majority Catholic population to the payment of 'thites' which were official levees for the upkeep of the state church, The Church of Ireland, at that time. Things got quite nasty for a time and all in all it makes for a very interesting story indeed, especially since it has a big local connection to the Fethard area.

FETHARD YOUTH CLUB
It is our first full month back and already the calendar for October is a full and busy one with lots of things to look forward to. On Friday, 11th October, twenty club members will travel to the Regional Inter-Club Table Quiz held in Annacarty. A bus will leave from outside the Ballroom at 7pm sharp. Don't be late lads! This is a wonderful opportunity for our club members to meet members from other clubs participating from all areas of Tipperary.
On 12th October two of our leaders will travel to Tipperary Town to partake in Advanced Leadership Training and one of our longest standing members, Emmet Burke, will attend a Leadership Induction Course. Welcome on board Emmet! On Saturday last, 5th October, some of our Members travelled to Tipperary Town to attend workshops on Drama and Arts and Crafts. A really interesting day was had and some great tips learnt. On Saturday night last, a foundation level NCVA in Italian was held at the Club for our Members and all had a good night. Certificates will be presented to those participating when the course has finished.
On a final note for October, Fethard Youth Club will be hosting the Regional Variety Show where clubs from all over Tipperary will travel to Fethard to compete in this annual event. A good night is promised and good luck to all the entrants. Just a small reminder to some of our Members, that affiliation fees are still outstanding, pay up please. New leaders are especially welcome, come on down any Saturday night from 7.10pm to 9.10pm, we'd be delighted to see you.

DIED RECENTLY
We record the death of Mrs Helen 'Nellie' Flynn, Derryluskin, Fethard, who died on Monday 30th September. Removal took place at 7 pm on Tuesday 1st October, from McCarthys Funeral Parlour to Holy Trinity Parish Church Fethard. Burial took place in Calvary Cemetery following 11am Requiem Mass on Wednesday.

MARRIED RECENTLY
The wedding took place at Mogorban Church on Friday 27th September of Gillian, daughter of Mr Stanley and Mrs Annette Murphy, Main Street, Fethard to Peter Collier, Meath.
The wedding took place at Cloneen Church on Friday 27th September of Ena, daughter of Mr John and Mrs Nora O’Meara, Milestown, to Michael Dunphy, Mullinahone.

FETHARD GAA CLUB
The Intermediate hurling south semifinal takes place on next Sunday Oct 6th when we meet Ballybacon / Grange in Clonmel at 3pm.

DIED RECENTLY
We record the death of Mrs Elsie Butler, Garrinch, Fethard, who died on Saturday 28th September. Removal took place at 7 pm on Sunday 29th September, from McCarthys Funeral Parlour to Holy Trinity Parish Church Fethard. Burial took place in Calvary Cemetery following 11am Requiem Mass on Monday.

LIFE BEGINS AT 78

Pat (Rathcoole) and Mary Hayes (nee Anglim, Knockelly) sent us this photograph taken on the site of their new home in Australia. They have moved to the Granite Belt, Australia, to be near their daughters. They are surrounded by vineyards, orchards and national parks.

FETHARD & KILLUSTY COMMUNITY CENTRE

The new extension at Fethard Tirry Centre was used for the first time on Wednesday night 25th September by Fethard Bridge Club. The South Eastern Health Board have appointed a new supervisor for the Day Care Centre will the Centre will reopen when the position is filled which is expected to be on Monday 14th October.

COOLMOYNE CREAMERY CLOSED

Coolmoyne Creamery, closed its doors for good on Friday, 27th September 2002 after 108 years service to the community. The occasion was marked by inviting past workers and neighbours for refreshments. Any queries will now be handled by the Fethard Glanbia Branch. Tel: 052 31108 or 087 6272009.
Congratulations to Joe Keane, formerly from The Green, who was appointed Creamery Manager at Glanbia, Ballingarry.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT PLAN
The Fethard & Killusty Community Council, following discussions with the County Council Planning Department, are preparing a community development plan for inclusion in the draft development plan for Fethard due to be published next year. The object is to identify the needs of the community and the needs of local organisations over the next 5 to 10 years. When this is completed the Community Council and the County Council will be in a stronger position to implement these plans in future development and planning applications for the area. Some of the items identified so far are:

• Extra playing facilities for sporting organisations,
• Serviced sites for private housing developments,
• A circular walking route safe for pedestrians around the outskirts of Fethard,
• Using our public buildings to their full potential,
• Promoting business in Fethard

The Community Council have prepared their initial suggestions in a document that will be posted to local organisations asking for their additional suggestions that will service the needs of their own organisation over the next 5 years. Individuals are also invited to make their own suggestions. Copies of the document are available at the Community Information Office in Barrack Street. A draft community development plan will be prepared from the feedback received before 31st October 2002. This plan will be presented at a public meeting mid-October where corrections and omissions will be noted before the plan is finally submitted to the County Council Planning Office for their consideration.

ROAD SURFACING

The resurfacing of Rocklow Road commenced last week by the very efficient and obliging County Council workers with road resurfacing contractors Kellys of Fantane. Disruption was kept to a minimum on this very busy road which services a doctors surgery, three schools and a community playgroup every day. The work should be completed as soon as the surface water levels are catered for with the installation of additional shores.

FETHARD & KILLUSTY COMMUNITY COUNCIL
The Annual General Meeting of Fethard & Killusty Community Council will take place on Tuesday 15th October, 2002, in the Tirry Community Centre at 8.30pm. All are welcome to attend.

CULCHIE FESTIVAL

Preparations are currently being made for the Annual National Culchie Festival, which will take place in Fethard next month, bank holiday weekend 26th and 27th October. Last year’s winner was Ken Lee from Killusty who took over the crown from another local winner, Brendan Morrissey, Cashel Road, Fethard. Maybe the parish will make it a hat-trick this year!
