Fethard – A Fairtrade Town?
Fairtrade Hamper Winner
Catherine Corcoran, presenting the winner of the Fethard Walled Town Day's Fairtrade Hamper, to Michael Mandeville, Anner Lodge, Ballinamore, Kilsheelan. The hamper is full of Fairtrade goods — tea, coffee, wine, biscuits, nuts, sweets and chocolate.

As part of a campaign to make Tipperary Ireland’s first Fairtrade County, the Thurles Fairtrade group set up a stall at the Medieval Festival in Fethard. The group met many people and the call for Tipp as Ireland’s first Fairtrade County received another boost as people in Fethard got a chance to see and sample the very wide range of Fairtrade goods now available in the County.

The most important thing about the Fairtrade campaign is to ensure that the producer-grower gets a fair price for the tea, coffee, fruit and other goods they produce and that we consume daily. Most of the producers of these goods are poor, small farmers in Africa and Latin America and despite working hard to produce high-quality produce they remain poor. This is because they are exploited by the middlemen they are forced to sell their produce to at a very low price that barely covers their costs. The Fairtrade campaign works to eliminate such exploitation by guaranteeing a fair price to the producer. The more Fairtrade goods we buy, the more producers can be supported.

We hope that soon, Fethard can take steps to become a Fairtrade town. This means that a substantial number of businesses, schools, shops, restaurants and local organisations support the campaign and buy and use Fairtrade goods. The Fairtrade mark is the only independent guarantee of a better deal for Third World producers and is supported by all the main development agencies in Ireland.
In order to achieve this, Fethard needs to participate in the following ways:

  • A local steering group is convened to ensure continued commitment to its Fairtrade status.
  • The Community Council passes a motion of support and agrees to serve Fairtrade products at all its meetings.
  • A range of Fairtrade mark products is sold in retail and catering outlets.
  • A flagship local business plus local schools, churches, voluntary groups and businesses switch to using Fairtrade products.
  • The group attract media and popular support for the campaign.

A significant number of schools become Fairtrade schools.
We look forward to your support. — Lucy McLaughlin, Mayor of Thurles.

New B&B Opens
Cozie B&B
Congratulations to Willie and Theresa O'Donnell who have opened their new Cozie B&B on the Rosegreen Road, Redcity, Fethard. At a time when Fethard’s tourism potential is growing steadily, this is a most welcome venture in the locality. The Cozie B&B is situated in a very peaceful area surrounded by green fields, yet less than five minutes walk from the centre of town. Willie and Theresa have also launched a website www.coziebandb.com to give further information and contact details to visitors wishing to visit our town. Theresa can be contacted on Tel: (052) 32276 or 086 8619203 or by e-mail bookings@coziebandb.com

Fethard ICA
Fethard ICA will resume the monthly meetings on Tuesday next 9th September. Hoping all our members had an enjoyable summer despite of the weather. However the Guild has something wonderful to celebrate in the accomplishment of our very talented member, Marie Crean, who this July at the RDS won 1st Prize in the National Crafts Competition, plus the RDS Perpetual Challenge Cup as overall winner for her beautiful christening gown worked in crochet. Many congratulations Marie.

We are happy to say that we have Kevin Collins as our speaker this month. As many will know Kevin is an expert on the bird population of town and countryside and their habitats. This will be a most interesting and informative talk and any non-members who would like to attend will be very welcome. Catering for this month is the Yellow Group.

As some fees are still due, we would ask members to pay them as soon as possible, helping to make the duties of our new Treasurer easier.

Fethard Bridge Club resumes
Bridge resumes in the Tirry Centre on Wednesday 10th September at 7.20pm. If there is enough interest we hope to run a course of lessons for beginners. Anyone interested in lessons should contact Gemma Burke at 052-31799 or Anne Connolly at 052-31217.

First Day at School

Monday morning last, 1st September, Rocklow Road was again a hob of activity as cars and pedestrians made their way through North Gate on their way back to commence another school year. At Nano Nagle National School it was a first experience for twenty-two pupils when they waved their parents goodbye and were left in the very capable hands of Junior Infant Class teacher, Mrs Margaret Gleeson. Mrs Gleeson’s many year’s teaching experience and patience blossomed again and within minutes had a very attentive and happy class enjoying their first experience on the road through academic life.
