Hunting News

Huntsman Derry Donegan leading the Tipperary Foxhound out by Fethard's North Gate at their traditional Opening Meet on October Bank Holiday Monday.

Over ninety mounted followers and an above average crowd of foot-followers and supporters turned out to welcome Huntsman Derry Donegan and hounds at the opening meet of the Tipperary Foxhounds at Fethard on Monday last.

Following the traditional blessing of the hounds by Rev. Fr. T. Breen P.P. and Rev. Barbara Fryday hounds moved off to the traditional first draw at Rocklow.  The Old Railway Line proved blank but hounds quickly found at Ballybough Bridge.  They hunted to the Killenaule Road at the Old Racecourse and back to Rathcoole Sandpit where he went to ground.

Finding again almost immediately hounds flew back to Rathvin where they caught him on top inside the level crossing at Sean Kelly’s.  From Rocklow House covert they hunted towards Fethard, crossing Monroe Boreen they swung back towards Rocklow.  This fox crossed the river via the old girders of Breen’s Bridge and was lost in McCarthy’s Bog.

A good afternoons hunting followed in the Ballyvaden Power’s Wood area.  A fox from Crean’s Grove ran to the Ballyvaden-Moyglass Road where he was lost.  Drawing in far at Janet Barbour’s hounds ran to Power’s Wood which held at least another leash, one ran to the riverbank at Farnaleen, and right-handed back to the Wood where hounds were stopped.  A sharp right-handed circle from Ardsallagh Gate brought a most enjoyable days hunting in excellent weather to conclusion.

Tony Newport photographed with First Whip, Paul O'Grady, who was later injured in a fall at the Opening Meet of Tipperary Foxhounds in Fethard.

Monday’s great day was marred by an unfortunate riding accident in which first-whip Paul O’Grady was injured.  Moving off from Main Street a followers mount colliding with a parked vehicle swerved and unseated Paul from his mount.  Paul sustained a very heavy fall onto the roadway.  A number of off duty nurses in the vicinity were quickly in attendance.  An ambulance transferred the injured huntsman to South Tipperary General Hospital where, Deo Gratias, his injuries were not as serious as first feared.

Fair dues and great credit to White Heather Harriers Huntsman, Donie Slattery, who on request took over Paul’s duties for the day and did an excellent job.

All hunting people will join in a vote of sympathy to a great supporter of Tipperary Foxhounds, Mrs Faith Ponsonby on the recent death of her mother, Mrs Cherry Brandon of Durrow, Co. Laois.  Interment took place at Kilcooley.

World Traveller Ward Returns
Fethard musician Aidan Ward, now based in the West of Ireland when not meandering on his musical journey around the globe, is coming back to the Abymill for his second annual Fethard gig. Last year’s event was a huge success. Aidan took to the stage with fellow musician Tom Portman and held the audience captive with his unique musical style. He has spent the past year traveling and gigging everywhere from Milwaukee to Munich.

The supporting act this year are young up and coming band ‘Naked Mr America’ comprising of brothers Jack and Van O’Sullivan, Lory Kenny, Ciarán Leahy and Kevin Maher.  They write all their own material and claim influences as diverse as early U2, Damien Rice and pre McDonalds Johnny Logan.

Aidan hopes to film the gig for a future DVD. A good storyteller, Aidan recounted how he has been misplaced in venues in America. As an Irish singer, agents expected that he would belt out the old Irish standard ballads and come all ye’s. He was surprised to arrive on a stage at one venue to see the back wall covered with a 10-foot high picture of Gerry Adams. Hopefully the DVD will show what he is about . . . a singer songwriter in his prime.

Tickets for the gig are €10 and can be purchased from McCarthy’s in Fethard or any of the band members. Anyone wishing to learn more about either of these acts can check out aidanward.com or Naked Mr America on their website  http:bebo2nd.com/Naked-Mr-America. Special guests are expected on the night.

At 11am on Friday morning, 19th October, the Patrician / Presentation Secondary School student awards ceremony commenced with Mass. The celebrants Rev. Tom Breen and Fr. Gerry Horan welcomed all — the Principal and Deputy Principal, staff, students, Board of Management representatives, Parents Association, parents and family members of students, ancillary staff, business representatives and our special guest of honour, Ann-Marie O’Donnell, of Mocklers Hill, a past pupil of the school.

The choir, made up of seniors, Transition Year, 5th and 6th Year students was accompanied by Kevin Hickey. The interlude between the Mass and the commencement of the awards ceremony was devoted to our up and coming 2nd Year group ‘Zero Tolerance’. The band comprising of Noel O’Brien, Ted Barrett, Tony Myler and Gareth Lawrence treated us to a very professional ‘Simple Man’ composed by Leonard Skinner. The Principal Mr Ernan Britton addressed the assembly regarding the importance of this day for everyone and how it had become a milestone in the eventful year of the school. He thanked all those who had helped in the preparation for the event, particularly Mr Michael O’Gorman, Mr Denis Burke and Mr R. Prendergast. He then introduced guest speaker Ann-Marie O'Donnell to all.

Ann-Marie completed her Honours Leaving Cert in 1991 and is now involved in a legal practice in Wexford Town. Ann-Marie's address was clear and practical, offering the students very sound advice on their future careers and what road they should take. Ann-Marie went on to present the ‘Student of the Year’ Druid Cuchulainn awards to Jane Fitzgerald  (2nd year), Fiona Crotty (3rd year) and Jonathan Hall (6th year).

In September the Fethard Historical Society had organised a Town Wall Photography Competition in conjunction with the Heritage Council of Ireland and Ms Patricia Looby, Art Teacher, presented the junior 1st Prize to Angelico Bano, one of our international students from Italy. Runners up were Aisling O’Dwyer and Xuan Wyatt whose family have recently returned to the United States, so Xuan’s prize was collected by her grandmother Mrs Phyll Wyatt.

At the conclusion of the ceremony the Principal Mr Britton presented Ann-Marie O'Donnell with a framed photograph to commemorate her return to the school as our guest on this very special day. And so, passed another beautiful Awards Day on a serene and sunny autumn day in October 2007.

Fethard GAA Club News
The Minor Football B County Final was played in Boherlahan on Saturday 29th October and with ‘lady luck’ on our side we have another chance at a date to be appointed after finishing level on a scoreline. Fethard 1-6. Upperchurch/Drombane 1-6.  The game was a low scoring final with our team never reaching the heights of previous rounds.

The team was: J. P. McGrath, Gavin Fitzgerald, Cathal Gorey, Ciarán O’Connell, Tom O’Connell, Adrian Lawrence, James Kelly, Christopher Sheehan 0-1, Aaron Donovan, Dean Tobin 1-1, Eoin O’Connell 0-3(1f), Alan O’Connor, Eoin Condon 0-1 (captain), Declan Doyle and Michael Fleming. Sub used was Ciaran Ryan (55min).

We wish senior footballers success in their County Final bid on Sunday 4th November in Cashel against Moyle Rovers at 3pm. Our last apperance and success at this level was in 2001 when we beat Aherlow by 1-13 to 0-8 in Thurles and went on to loose the Munster Club final to Nemo Rangers by 4 points. Most of our current team were playing then with only Tom Anglim, Michael Quinlan, Brian Burke and Tommy Sheehan not available. We have some very nice young talent at our disposal for Sunday and as it is the very first meeting of both teams in a County Final. Fethard will be very anxious to reverse their South Final defeat to the same team on 29th September last. To our team selectors and management — the very best of luck!

The South Junior ‘A’ quarterfinal was played in Dr Morris Park. Fethard for the first time in this venue playing under lights, met St Patricks on Monday 21st October. This was a high scoring match with Fethard losing out on a scoreline, St Pats 3-15, Fethard 3-6.

The team on the evening was: Glen O’Meara, Connie O’Flynn, Philly Blake 0-1, Nicky Murphy, William O’Brien, Tommy Gahan, Mike Kelly, Brian Burke, Kevin O’Donnell, John Fitzgerald, Martin Coen 0-3 (1f), Paul Kenrick, Ed Sheehan, Michael O’Riordan and Johnny Neville 2-1. Subs at half-time were: Willie O’Meara, Alan Burke and J P McGrath 1-0 (55min).
