Not Forgotten!
This week, when the 49,000 Irishmen who fell in the Great War 1914-18 are being remembered nationally, we remember the 44 men from Fethard district who died in that terrible conflict and also the many others who returned safely and have long since passed on.

Fethard GAA Club News
Pride of Place in the Fethard Club must go to Paul Fitzgerald when last weekend, 1st November, he brought home the first ever Donnelly Sponsored Railway Cup football medal to Fethard GAA Club. This was Munster’s 15th success in Portlaoise. They won on a scoreline, Munster 1-9, Connaught 0-7, having defeated Ulster in the semifinal the previous week in Fermoy. Paul played in goal and kept a clean sheet. Having been a member on the Munster Panel since 2005 without success he now holds a memorable place in the history books along with the great Jim Williams, Clonmel, who was the last Tipperary man to win in both 1941 and 1946. Jim was a member of the Munster panel seven time in the period 1936 to 1947
Many other great players from the Fethard Club played on losing sides over the years — Dick Allen, Tony Newport (goalie), Gus Danagher, Dinny Burke, Brian Burke and Tom Anglim. Dick Allen played for six consecutive years from 1934 to 1939 without success.
We say well done again to Paul who hails from Kiltinan and is the eldest son of Gus and Josie Fitzgerald.

The much awaited South Intermediate Hurling final replay took place on Sunday 2nd November and ended Fethard’s year on the playing field when they won their 6th title and their third since 2000, others being 2002, 2006 and 2008. The very sporting game was played in Kilsheelan and Fethard were lucky to get a vital goal near the end of the match to take the lead for the first time and win by two points on a scoreline, Fethard 1-13, Moyle Rovers 0-14.

We had excellent displays from Aiden Fitzgerald 0-11 (8f), Chris Sheehan 0-2, and in defence Shane Walsh and Aiden Lonergan shone but overall it was a great team performance with J. P. McGrath not putting a foot wrong between the posts. For his first Intermediate match J.P. showed years of maturity. We also had our astute substitution, Benny Hahessy, to help us win out on the day for the Friary Town.

Well done to all in bringing back the Jerome O’Dwyer Cup to Fethard. The team was: J P McGrath, Michael Carroll, Shane Walsh, Eoin O’Connell, Aiden Lonergan, Michael Ryan, Cian Maher, Brian Coen 0-1, John P Looby, Jamie McCormack, Aiden Fitzgerald 0-11 (8f), Miceál Spillane, Christopher Sheehan 0-1, Eoin Doyle and Kenneth O’Donnell. Subs were: Benny Hahessy 1-0 for Kenneth O’Donnell (54 min), and Dean Tobin for Miceál Spillane (56 min).

In the County Junior A Football Semifinal played in Ballingarry on Saturday 1st November, we really didn’t get our act together in the second half after having a wonderful first half against the wind. We kept very much in touch when only trailing by a point on a scoreline, Fethard 1-4, Moycarkey 1-5, with scores from Conor McCarthy 1-2 (1f), Martin Coen 0-2, and very good displays from Nicky Murphy, Philly Croke and Philly Blake. Throughout the whole game they certainly could not be faulted for the defeat but with four wides in the second half it was a game that just got away from us and finished on a scoreline, Fethard 1-5, Moycarkey 1-8.We wish them the best in the County Final. The team was: J.P. McGrath, William O’Brien, Nicky Murphy, Philly Croke, Philly Blake, Willie Morrissey, Alan O’Connor, Cathal Gorey, Miceál Spillane, John Leahy, Michael Carroll, Kenneth O’Donnell, Martin Coen 0-2, Stephen O’Donnell and Conor McCarthy 1-3 (2f). Subs used were: Eoin O’Connell for John Leahy, Jimmy O’Meara for William O’Brien, and Aaron O’Donovan for Martin Coen (injured).

Our Lotto Jackpot €10,000 was not won on 28th October. The numbers drawn were 6, 15, 18 and 22. We had two match three winners who received €75 each: Kevin Ryan (Loughcopple, Fethard) and Rita Doyle (Woodvale Walk, Fethard). The €50 Lucky Dip was won by Paul Fitzgerald (Kiltinan, Fethard) and the tickets were kindly sponsored by Clonmel Oil.

Hunting News
Last week hunting was not the best, high winds and poor scent plus a scarcity of foxes did not contribute to hunting of the highest order. From Kedrah, on Wednesday, hounds did not find for an hour. The Grove at Kennedy’s held. Hounds hunted very well in covert but could not hold the line in the open, Cahervillahow from Thomastown was blank. Moving across the road to the Glen under Kilfeacle Moate they ran a circle to Tommy Stack’s back to the Glen and to ground. They did not find again until drawing the Long Grove running again a circle to a large kale field back to where they found.

With the White Heathers
Once again a large crowd in Drangan on Sunday for the opening meet of the Ballyluskey White Heathers. Foxes were in good supply here. While they did not have a run of any great distance hounds were however kept busy all day, hunting all afternoon over Knockroe, Mullaly’s, Glenmuicadee and, later, on the flatlands under the Priestown Road finishing the day at Mr Fred Daly’s. The Ballyluskey Harriers meet on Sunday next in Cloneen at 11am.

Judo News
Well done to Donal O'Donnell, Aobh O'Shea and Padraig O'Shea for their very successful results at the recent Irish Open Judo Competition. Donal started in his weight category of 25kgs and won gold. Donal fought brilliantly on the day and the hard training has paid off. Aobh fought hard and came out with silver in her 44kg category. Padraig was in great form on Saturday when he fought both youths and seniors in the 60kg category and came out with bronze and fourth. He did us proud on Sunday when he came out with the gold in his own cadet under 60kg competition.

Well done to Martin O'Donnell for a fine job refereeing along with other international referees appointed for the weekend.
On Saturday 25th October Both Aobh and Donal travelled back to Dublin to compete in the Halloween junior cup. They both came home happy after a very long day with Donal receiving a gold and bronze and Aobh winning two gold medals in their respective categories.

Fethard and District Rugby Club
All our under age teams travelled to Waterpark to play a blitz against our hosts and Kilkenny.

Our Under 7s played two very strong teams and even though our team was defeated in both games they showed great improvement, and the coaches were particularly impressed with the tackling skills displayed and the spirit shown by the Fethard Players well done to all.
The under 9s were also in action against Waterpark and Kilkenny. They played tremendous rugby against Waterpark to run out deserving winners on a score ling of 5 tries to two. This young team tired in their second game and Kilkenny won by two tries to Nil. This team continues to improve and showed great tackling and passing skills. The coaches would like to see the full squad back at training on Friday night next.

The under 11s also participated in this blitz and had a great victory against Kilkenny beating them by 6 tries to one. Fethard played a fast running game and their skills with the ball in hand was excellent. The Kilkenny lads were very big and were hard to put down in the tackles. The scorers for Fethard were Jack Stapleton 2 tries, Jack Gleeson 2 tries Tim Stakelum 1 try and Paul Moloney 1 try. The game against Waterpark was a much tighter affair with both teams really testing each other. Fethard deservedly won by two tries to one with Jack Stapleton scoring both tries. These two victories were based on real teamwork and the coaches are trilled with the progress all these lads are making.

The team was Jack Kennedy, Jason Ryan, Luke Ryan, Jack Stapleton, Jack Gleeson Ciaran White, Tom Stakelum, Paraic Norton, and Paul Moloney.

The under 12s had a great victory against Kilkenny winning by 6 tries to 2. They played excellent Rugby throughout this game, and were deserving of this great win.

The effects of Halloween haunted them in the first half against Waterpark and allowed Waterpark in for 7 tries in the first half. The Fethard lads put in a much better performance in the second half but despite constant pressure were denied a score by Waterpark. The Team was Tommy Anglim, Russell Casey, Warvey Blackmore, Charlie Carroll, Cathal O’Donnell, Cian O’Connell, Owen McCormack, David Heffernan and Ben Murray.

Our under 16s secured a great victory against Dungarvan a very entertaining game of rugby on a score line of 25 points to 17. This victory was built on a very solid forward play with Colm Shanahan and Sam Manton carrying the ball and breaching the gain line time and time again. It was one of these forward drives that released Joe Meagher for Fethard’s first try, he converted himself. Dungarvan attacked the Fethard line continuously and were rewarded with a try, they failed to convert. Fethard upped the tempo and worked the ball infield to release the ever improving Ciaran Power for our second try, the conversion was narrowly missed. Tony O’Brien had a great game at full back, and ran in an excellent try. Timmy Donovan and Shane Power also had excellent games. This was a huge improvement by this Fethard team and they can look forward to the rest of the season with confidence.

Our under 18s hosted Clanwilliam and despite a very shaky start were unlucky to loose this one. Clanwilliam were very quick out of the traps and ran in 3 tries before Fethard realised they were in a game. Fethard responded very well and with our forwards beginning to boss the game, our scrum half Willie Power gave quick ball to release John O’Dwyer for our first try which John Lawlor converted. Fethard now piled on the pressure, and quick ball released Michael O’Hagan for a well taken try, this was Michael O’Hagan’s best ever game in a Fethard jersey. John O’Dwyer converted leaving the half time score at 15–14 in favour of Clanwilliam. Fethard resumed the second with purpose defending well and attacking at every opportunity. Jonathon Fleming at full back is playing great rugby, attacking and defending with purpose. David Hall, Joe Kelly and Colm Blackmore began to dominate at this stage and when Colm crossed the line to give us a four point lead with 10 minutes remaining were looking good for a win but Clanwilliam got in for a late try and Clanwilliam to win by 22 points to 19.

Ladies Rugby — The training for the ladies rugby is been switched to Friday nights at 8pm.
