Emigrants Annual Newsletter time is here again
Now that the expected summer has come and gone and the evenings begin to close, we ask for your photographs and articles to be submitted for inclusion in this year’s annual emigrants newsletter. We especially appeal for new contributors to take pen to paper and write about their thoughts and memories of Fethard and its people — whether it be short or long, funny or sad, simple or complicated — we know our many readers at home and throughout the world will really appreciate your efforts.

We would also appeal to club secretaries and regular contributors to submit their articles as soon as they can to ensure the Newsletter is ready for printing in plenty of time to be delivered before Christmas.
If there are any school class photographs or other group photographs we would be particularly interested in using them in this year’s issue. Photographs can be brought by hand (or posted) to Joe Kenny, Rocklow Road, Fethard, where they can be scanned while you wait and returned instantly.

The annual church gate collection in aid of the Emigrant’s Newsletter will be held in the parish at the end of the month, weekending 25th & 26th October 2008. If you would like to make a donation online you can do so by Credit Card MAKE A DONATION TO EMIGRANTS NEWSLETTER

Fethard Ladies Football Club would like to congratulate the Tipperary team on their terrific win in the TG4 All-Ireland Ladies intermediate final with a three-point victory over Clare at Croke Park on Sunday last. It was wonderful to see two members of the Fethard Club, Barbara Ryan and Sinead Delahunty, on the team. Well done to all the girls on an excellent team performance and a well deserved win.

Home from New York to celebrate her 90th Birthday
Sister Philomena (Nuala) O'Brien OSU, New York, and originally from The Green, Fethard, travelled back home to celebrate her 90th birthday with family and friends last week.

Sailing from Cobh in 1935
Photographed above are the four young Fethard girls, L to R: Nuala O'Brien, Monica Kevin, Kitty McCarthy and Nellie Carey, leaving on the boat from Cobh to join the Ursuline Order in New York in 1935.

In 1935, seventeen-year-old Nuala O’Brien boarded a ship at Cobh and left her home on The Green, Fethard, to join the Ursuline Sisters, following her sister into the community which was just becoming established on Long Island, New York. The voyage, she recalled, was her answer to divine guidance. “I didn’t know anything about the Ursulines at all,” she recalled, “I just knew I was going away to do something for God.” That “something for God” developed into 63 active years working in religious life, a time she spent as a teacher, principal, superior for her community, and retreat director.

As a teacher with the Ursuline Order, Sister Philomena fulfilled a variety of rolls including eighteen years in ‘Our Lady of Grace’ Grammar School in Howard Beach, Queens, where she earned a doctorate in history from St. John’s University; six years as principal in Stamford, Connecticut; and ten years as Provincial of the Ursuline Order. During this time she travelled extensively, lecturing at Ursuline Convents within the United States and attending International Meetings in Belgium, England, Holland, Rome, Germany, and a variety of other locations.

In 1982 Sr. Philomena became Retreat Director at the Sr. Ursuline Centre in Blue Point and kept the same position up to 1998 when she finally stepped down from active work after celebrating her 80th birthday.

When asked why she was called ‘Philomena’ she replied, “When we were all young my mother was very sick and she prayed to Saint Philomena. She promised Saint Philomena if God spared her until we were all grown up that if any of us entered a convent, she would ask if that child could be called Sr. Philomena. I really didn’t want that name and I was kind of disappointed. I wanted the name Catherine after my mother: but that was her wish and that’s why many of the sisters with the renewal in religious life, changed their names, but I never changed mine. I felt that Saint Philomena kept my mother alive so I felt I owed her that.”

Will Power, The Convent Lodge
Will and Anne Power with their daughter (Cissy) who lived in the Convent Lodge, they formerly lived in the Valley. Cissey Power changed her name to Sr. Benignus, when she joined the Ursuline Convent, New York.

On her trip home last week Sister Philomena paid a poignant revisit to Cobh where she recalled the emotional feelings she experienced on that long lonely journey by boat to New York, leaving her close family and friends behind. Indeed, on her revisit to Cobh, she also remembered to bring a dozen eggs with her on the journey in case she met someone in need — an old Irish custom.

Sr. Philomena, accompanied by her good friend Sr. Mary DeMontfort OSU, was delighted to meet her many relatives on this trip to Fethard and was particularly grateful to Lynn (Bradshaw) and Johnny Cummins for hosting the party at their home in Knockinglass outside Moyglass. Lynn’s grandmother was Ursula (O’Brien) Fleming, a sister of Sister Philomena. Other relatives present included members of the Trehy and Kenny families.

O'Brien Family

Sister Philomena’s parents were Katie (Kenny) and Pat O’Brien from The Green and lived where McCormack’s now live. Her siblings, now all deceased, were Kathleen (Sr. Evangelist OSU), Mary (Connolly), Ursula (Fleming) and Eddie O’Brien.

We, her friends in Fethard, congratulate Sr. Philomena for recognising and answering God’s call at the young age of seventeen. Her departure from Fethard at that young age was our loss and America’s gain.

Fethard District Juvenile Rugby Club
Fethard & District Juvenile Rugby Club have been training for the past three weeks and it is wonderful to see a great turn out up at the Community Field on Friday evenings for training. We are pleased to welcome back our current members and delighted to see plenty of new members join the club this season.

We started the Mini rugby, Under 8s, 10s and 12s matches last Sunday at Home in the Fethard Community Field against Clonmel and Kilfeacle. The under-8s played Clonmel first and showed a stronger play throughout the match. Their second game against Kilfeacle was well contested and ended up a draw with great rugby from both sides. Throughout the morning we witnessed fabulous tackling from Joe Carroll, Harry Cummins and Danny Gleeson. Ciaran O'Dwyer and Connor Vaughan moved up a level this year and provided great support to the team with good tackling and passing skills. The tries came thick and fast thanks to Darragh Lynch, Frankie Meagher, Peter Wall, Dale Murphy and Gavin Ryan. Keep up the great work boys.

Our Under 7s team played their first ever match and acquitted themselves very well against strong opposition in Kilfeacle. With a huge turnout we saw great work from our squad of 19 who all got a game. Great tackling was seen from Matthew Burke, Matthew Thompson, Angus MacDonald, Oisín Smullen, Connor McCormack, Daire O'Connell and Shane Neville. The team was ably assisted by Emma Jane Burke, Charlie Pearson, Mark Stakelum, Richard Anglim and Matthew Gleeson, with their persistent back up and tackling. Ethan Coen, Richard Robinson and Michael Scully showed determination in driving their team forward. We must not forget the hard work of Ben Purcell, Patrick Shine, Ryan Walsh and Evan Looby who proved their worth throughout the game. Also thank you very much to all the parents who turned out to support, it is very much appreciated.

We look forward to seeing and enjoying more great rugby on the pitch. If your son or daughter has not already registered, please return your completed membership form to the club ASAP with €25 (if new member please bring copy of long birth cert and two passport size photographs). If your child is not registered they will not be covered to play under the Club Insurance Scheme. Also coaches and parents under the senior membership please note that the new seasons fee, €50 is now due. If you are not receiving the texts regarding training and matches please text your child’s name and age group i.e. U12 to 087 744 7691.

School supports Tanzanian education project
Tanzanian Fundraiser
Patrician Presentation Secondary school presenting cheque to Sr. Kathleen Costigan OLA for Tanzania. L to R: Mr Ernan Britton (Principal), Sarah Hayes, Sr. Kathleen Costigan OLA, Darragh Dwyer, Mr Denis Burke and Ms Marian Gilpin (Deputy Principal).

Sr. Kathleen Costigan, originally from Clonakenny, Co. Tipperary, is now working in Tanzania as a missionary nun for the OLA order. OLA is the Missionary Congregation of Our Lady of Apostles. The Congregation was founded in 1876 for missions in West Africa — at that time seen as one of the most neglected places on earth.
Sr. Kathleen called to the Patrician Presentation Secondary school on 24th September to give talks to the pupils on Tanzania and receive a cheque for €1,325, which was raised in the school to sponsor girls in education in Bugesi, Tanzania. Sr. Kathleen expressed her thanks and that of the pupils helped, and explained that donations have a big impact in Tanzania in what is one of the poorest countries on earth.

Visit from South Australia

Mary Carroll-Guerin, formerly Mary Shine from Crampscastle, home on holidays from Australia

Mary Carroll-Guerin, formerly Mary Shine from Crampscastle, is presently home on holidays from Gawler, South Australia. Mary worked at O'Flynn's Tailors on Burke Street before setting up her own business as a seamstress and later emigrating. Mary was last home four years ago and was really amazed how busy Fethard is now compared to then, in particular the increase in traffic through the town. Mary is a sister to Tom Shine now living in Cahir, Pat Shine, Herts, England, who was a former organiser of the Fethard- London Reunion for many years, and Peg Shine, now living in Cappamore, Co. Limerick. The Shine family will be particularly remembered for their association with the Capital Cinema in Fethard which opened in January 1946. Tom Shine worked there for a total of 18 years and was appointed manager in 1950.

Fethard GAA Club News
The weekend brought us mixed look when on Friday night our Junior A footballers won the South title on a scoreline, Fethard 2-7, St Patricks 0-9. This was our 12th in total the last won in 2003. This also created a small bit of history as we were the first team to win a South adult title played under lights in the division in Ballyporeen.
Fethard had fine displays from the full back line of William O’Brien, Nicky Murphy and Philly Croke. Philly Blake and Alan O’Connor helped by cutting off attacks with Aaron O’Donovan, Miceál Spillane and Conor McCarthy in form up front. The team was: J P McGrath, William O’Brien, Nicky Murphy, Philly Croke, Philly Blake, Willie Morrissey, Alan O’Connor, Thomas Keane, Cathal Gorey, John Leahy, Martin Coen 1-1, Miceál Spillane 0-1, Johnny Neville, Tom Anglim and Conor McCarthy 0-5 (3f). Subs were: Michael Carroll for Tom Anglim (10mins), Aaron Donovan for Cathal Gorey (20min), Eoin O’Connell for Johnny Neville (45m), Shane Kenny for Martin Coen (60m) and Mike Kelly for Philly Blake (62m). We wish them the very best in the County when they now play the Mid Champions,
On Sunday last our Minor B Hurlers were not so lucky when they met a very much in form St. Marys team in the South Final losing on a scoreline, Fethard 3-9, St. Marys 1-18.

Fethard’s Gavin Fitzgerald, Eoin O’Connell, Tom O’Connell, Aaron Donovan, Adrian Lawrence and Christopher Sheehan caught the eye. The full team was: J P McGrath, Gavin Fitzgerald, James Kelly, Ciaran O’Connell, Aaron Conran, Eoin O’Connell, Tom O’Connell, Dean Tobin 1-5 (all frees), James O’Keeffe, Christopher Sheehan 0-3, Cathal Gorey, Aaron O’Donovan 1-0, Adrian Lawrence 1-0, Alan Lawrence 0-1, and Ciaran Ryan. Subs were: Mathew Fitzgerald for Adi Lawrence (injured) and Frankie Donovan for Cathal Gorey.
Fixtures — On Saturday 4th October our Intermediate hurlers play the County quarterfinal in Boherlahan at 2pm against Drom Inch we wish them the best off luck.

The Lotto Jackpot was not won. The numbers drawn were 4, 12, 13 and 22. We had one match three winner of €150 to Ned Connolly (Garrinch, Fethard). The €50 Lucky Dip was won by James Cahill (Merrys & Co. Clonmel). We would like to thank Harrington Developments for providing the tickets.
