A meeting to re-establish a Tidy Towns Committee in Fethard was held in the Tirry Centre on Monday 5th October attended by special guests from Emly who spoke on how they started Tidy Towns in their own area and when on to win the overall Tidy Towns national competition.

The meeting, organised by Fethard & Killusty Community Council, was attended by Cllr John Fahey, Denis Heffernan (Emly), Pat Ryan (Emly), Joe Barry (Emly), Jonas Callinan (Emly), Joe Kenny, Ger Manton, Thelma Griffith, Brian Sheehy, Ann Cooney, Diana Stokes, Joan Woodlock, Margaret Lawlor, Rosemary O’Donnell, Joe Keane, Fionnuala O’Sullivan, Patsy Lawrence, Anna Cooke, Diana Stokes and Nellie O’Donovan.

Denis Heffernan gave a very interesting talk on his experiences in Emly and emphasised the importance of being positive at all times and getting out and doing the work on the ground instead of waiting for local authorities to act. He also stressed that perseverance will also be rewarded with others following good example. He suggested an overall professional plan for the town would be a very good starting point that would help involve individual areas and estates. He also suggested the importance of awareness with local schools encouraged to get involved in ‘Green Flag’ and ‘Wild Life’ projects.

Mr Heffernan then gave a detailed report on how the group visited Fethard on the previous Sunday in preparation for this meeting and listed their findings and suggestions. This report was surprisingly very complimentary and emphasised how litter-free the town was for a Sunday evening. The other Emly representatives then spoke in turn about how they got involved in Tidy Towns work and answered questions from the floor.

Current problem areas such as, the litter and broken glass by the river walk, the need to control dog litter, how to get people involved, who to contact in the relevant authorities when needed, and the lack of general support, were all discussed.

Names interested in forming a committee were taken and it was decided to call a further meeting to form the committee.
Cllr John Fahey thanked the former tidy towns committee in Fethard for all their work and also congratulated the Fethard Town Wall Medieval Festival committee for organising an event that was supported by the whole community of Fethard.

Joe Kenny, on behalf of Fethard & Killusty Community Council, thanked Sharon Heffernan and the Emly representatives present for their tremendous support in preparing a report for Fethard and attending the meeting. The group were also congratulated on their achievement in winning the National Tidy Towns Competition and on bringing their winning trophies to the meeting as an incentive to us in Fethard to achieve the same in time to come.

Congratulations to Fethard Junior Ladies Football team on a terrific win in the county final played in Golden on Saturday last. The final score was Fethard 4-10 to Emly’s 1-2. This was a historic day for the Fethard club as it was their first county title at this level. Well done to all players and mentors for this great achievement.

The chairman of the Ladies Football County Board, Enda McDonald, hands over the cup to Fethard's captain after their tiumph over Emly in the Junior County Final.

The club would also like to thank Michael from Kellett’s Restaurant and Vincent Murphy from McCarthys Bar for their kind sponsorship of a lovely meal. They would also like to thank Johnny O’Halloran and Denis Byrne for their kind sponsorship of a set of togs.

Our under-13 blitz team got to the plate final at the ‘County Blitz’ held in Cahir last Sunday but unfortunately were beaten by a stronger team in the final. Many thanks to Michael Hayes, Maureen McCarthy and Michael Ryan for their assistance with this team, as this brings down the curtain on our activities on the playing field. The club would like to thank all our players and parents for their effort and help throughout the year. This has been a great year for our club winning two county titles.

Unique Exhibition at Willowbrook Lodge Nursing Home, Mockler’s Hill
Peter Horry, a retired professional artist from England, and now a resident at Willowbrook Lodge Nursing Home, Mockler’s Hill, Fethard, will have an exhibition of his work opened by Marie McMahon, Curator, County Museum, at 6.30pm on Friday 16th October, in a retirement home adjacent to Willowbrook Lodge Nursing Home.

Peter has a very bad case of Parkinson’s and following his partner’s death was unable to look after himself for quite a while. Nurses and neighbours in Ballingarry acquired him a place at Willowbrook Lodge Nursing home and it was there his spectacular paintings were noticed and brought to the attention of some local artists.

Peter Horry was very involved in the Film Industry in Ireland some years ago and his paintings sold in London for anything from £750 to £3,000. He was also attached to a few prestigious galleries in London.

Peter continues to paint today but unfortunately at a much slower pace due to his Parkinson’s. The exhibition is open to all and will run for approximately one week from the official opening on next Friday 16th October.

Tipperary Red Coat Races 1889
The ornate Tipperary Red Coat Races cup dated 8th April 1889
The ornate Tipperary Red Coat Races cup dated 8th April 1889

A very interesting cup with the following inscription came to our attention this week: “The Tipperary Red Coat Races, 8th April 1889, presented by D. Featherstone. To be won 3 times before becoming property of winner.” The cup was won by J.C. Higgins in 1889, 1890 and 1891 on a horse called ‘Saturn’.

John Charles Higgins, a very prominent amateur rider of his era having resided at Clonmel, Cahir and Lismortagh, came to live at Ardsallagh outside Fethard in 1895. He was an active member and supporter of Tipperary Foxhounds when Mr Richard Burke MFH was master and served a term as hunt secretary from 1902 to 1923.
Following Mr Higgins death, the cup came to the possession of the Butler family at Anner House. Mr Higgins was the granduncle of the late Mr Ted Butler, Anner House.

While it would appear that Kilnockin Races was the most likely venue where the cup was won, Ms Jenny Butler is anxious to discover if anyone can confirm if this is correct.

In 1902, Mr W.P. Hanly is listed as winner of a Galtee Hunt Red Coat Cup. W.P. Hanly rode well over 100 winners. Was the Galtee Hunt trophy a continuation of the Tipperary event or a separate race? The Galtee hounds were based in the Skeheenarinka district.
Any further information would be more than welcome.

From Russia with Gloves!
Jack ConnollyJust returned from Anapa, Russia, is Jack Connolly, The Green, who competed at the 7th European Schoolboys Boxing Championships 2009. After just two and half years of boxing this fine young athlete has reached the dizzy heights of International competition faster than one around him.

Although Jack was defeated by the champion of Azerbaijan on a scoreline of 6 points to 4, who incidentally was 12 months older and had 40 more bouts than the Irishman.

Jack can hold his head up high after taking on the best in Europe.
Jack was one of the youngest in the championships with 120 boxers, in 18 weight categories from 17 nations competing against each other. What an amazing experience of cultures and boxing over the nine days. A trip of a lifetime and memories forever, with new friends made, and invaluable knowledge in the sport of boxing it can’t get much better for the Fethard man.

We must not forget Jack’s coach Martin Fennessy, Clonmel Boxing Club, for bringing Jack up to International level in such a short space of time.

Next up for Jack its Fright Night on Halloween Night at the Clonmel Park Hotel, where Ireland’s Kenny Egan and Clonmel’s finest boxers will be hosting one of the biggest shows of the year.

Last but not least a big thank you to Jack's family and friends who turned out in such huge numbers in Dublin Airport on his return. What a lovely sight and surprise to see everyone there to greet him. What next? ‘Chicago 2016’, definitely!

Fethard & District Rugby Club
Anglim leads the way in historic first win for Fethard’s J3s in beating Carrick on Saturday last. Following persistent pressure the evergreen Tom Anglim crossed for a fine try which Declan Doyle converted. Fethard’s Emmet Sheridan was very effective followed up by some great running from Tom Gahan and Shane Kenny which led to a fine try by Joe Kelly. Stout defence from Michael Knightly, Martin Murphy and Richard Lawlor saw Fethard lead by 12 points to 3 at half time.

Fethard introduced Jim O'Brien and Dick Walsh after the break. Niko Hynes cleaned up on the line out and was well assisted by Richie Horan, John Fitzgerald and Jeff Coady.

Fethard rucked the ball to the half way and were rewarded with a scrum which allowed Alan O'Connor break for a try under the posts. The veteran Johnny Neville make his rugby debut at this stage. Carrick they never gave up and crossed for a great try from a five meter scrum. This was followed by Fethard’s Tom Gahan scoring a try that he duly converted.

This was a great team performance, the fitness levels, passing and rucking skills will need to be improved. Training continues every Tuesday and Friday evenings at 8pm, new players always welcome. For further information phone 086 8388205.

Our under 13s travelled to Clonmel for a blitz on Sunday last. Fethard played with great heart against first opponents, UL Bohemians. Adam Norton and Michael Gaynor set up great ball for the backs with Liam Meagher, Christian Casey and Harry Tobin making line breaking runs. Elusive running from Daren Prout saw him score two tries, both converted by Paudie Feehan. Bohemians could not break a strong Fethard defence.

We than played the eventual winners Dungarvan. Fethard never gave up with great performances from Tommy Murphy, Mark Collins John Clancy, Keith Cleere and Luke Grant.

In the final game we played Clonmel. Mathew Walsh, Paul Moloney and Andrew Phelan won great ball and with Darren Prout in great running form Fethard held out for a 10 points to 5 win. Our thanks to Clonmel for their hospitality and we wish Andrew Phelan a speedy recovery from his hand injury.

Our under 15s hosted Clonmel and played remarkable rugby to win 40 points to Nil. Fethard’s win was built from the platform of an exceptional line out with Jack McCarthy, Ger Gorey and Jimmy Fehan dominating the exchanges throughout. Jack McCarthy crossed for two tries and Jimmy Fehan scored one and converted five. Out-halfs William Morgan and David Hayes had exceptional games with William scoring his first try for the club. Toss Murray, Tadhg Fogarty and Kyle Walsh also scored tries. We travel to Dungarvan next Sunday and will need a full panel at training this week.

Fethard Athletic Club Notes
On Sunday last we visited the Turn Pike outside Littleton for the Tipperary AAI uneven age group Cross County Championships.
Our first runner was Mark Heffernan in the U13 race who finished in the middle of the pack, after a very fast race. Newcomer Kevin Hayes ran with the boys under 19 winning team combination. Louis Rice ran a very tight race in sticky condition and finished 6th in the U17 event and booked his place on the Tipperary team for Munster on Sunday week.

Adam O'Donnell took the silver medal in the boys U19 championship. After a terrible start, he slowly pulled back and led his team of Eoin Healy, Kevin Hayes and Alex Davis to the first team award in the boys U19 Tipperary championship. Congratulation to Hannah Harbich on finishing in 5th position in the girls U19.

Training on Monday and Thursdays 7.30pm to 8.45pm in the community field. All are welcome! Derek Zulu will take training on Thursday nights.

Next weekend we have the Munster uneven age group in Dungarvan. The County B will be held in Thurles later in the month and hopefully we will have a big turnout for that event. Orders are now being taken for our new tops and shorts. Our dinner and presentation will be held early in December.
