Athletes photographed at the Fethard Athletic Club's 'Fun and Run' training held in Fethard Community Field on Monday night

At the moment we have twenty athletes of various ability attending our training sessions on Monday and Thursday nights in the Community Field. The 'fun and run' aspect of our training is very important to the enjoyment of the many and varied exercises we perform during the hour while we in the field. Individuals will decide when they are ready to move on to something a little more strenuous.
Coach, Derek Zulu, is more than happy to have one-to-one tuition with anyone if desired. We are hopeful to have teams entered in the forthcoming novice road and relay championships.

The cross-country, run under lights before Christmas, was a great success and also very beneficial to those who took part. Thanks to the clubs who supported us. We look forward to the same clubs attending our Spring League which will start shortly.

Derek took part in the senior indoors in Nenagh but with little success. We expect him to get a chance to redeem himself at the all Irelands in the Odyssey in Belfast later in the year.

Our club jackets are now sold out but another batch is on the way and by the weekend we will be able to fill the outstanding orders. Due to the good feeling at our Christmas dinner we are thinking of repeating a similar function at Easter.

Our AGM will be held shortly after which we hopefully can move onto better things.

Fethard & Killusty Community Council
Fethard & Killusty Community Council members have now completed their six-week Development Programme to assess the current committee's work and to help ensure the future work and direction of the Community Council is what best serves the community. The programme, facilitated by coach Ailbhe Harrington, identified many strategic objectives with a possible shift of focus in the role of the community council and a change in energy within the group to avoid burnout.

The next meeting of Fethard and Killusty Community Council will take place on Tuesday, February 1, at 8.30pm in the Tirry Community Centre. All are welcome.

Jack wins for Ireland
On Friday night, January 21, the Irish Amateur Boxing Association presented International Boxing, Ireland v Wales, at the City North Hotel, Dublin. Jack Connolly, The Green, and from Clonmel Boxing Club, fighting out of the red corner, and wearing the green jersey for Ireland, in the 57kg, was up against the Welsh Champion, Jim Price, from Cwnbran. Jack with his club coach Martin Fennessy in his corner, won on a majority decision, where he had to dig deep and use his strength and skill, to out box the awkward style of the Welsh man.
Another great start to the 2011 season, with an International win under his belt, and sets up to what hopefully will be, another successful year for this very popular young Fethard man.

Fethard GAA Club news
Fethard senior and junior football teams returned to training on Wednesday night, January 19. Although numbers could have been better, those who attended put in a great session under the guidance of temporary coaches Paul Fitzgerald and Jamie McCormack. Training will continue on Wednesday nights at 7.30 for the coming weeks and we would encourage anyone interested in playing football in 2011 to attend. New players are always welcome as are some of the 'old' who may have got lost along the way. No better time than the present to get back in training. You're your boots and togs in good shape!

U-21s are continuing to train under the expert tutelage of Tommy Sheehan, Buddy Fitzgerald and Jamie McCormack. We wish them all the best in their fast approaching championship.

Juvenile training for those under-16 and minor, who are not on the under-21 team, takes place on Wednesday, January 26, at 7pm; P12 and under-14s on Wednesday, February 9, at 7pm. Mini GAA to be informed, but expected to be in late February.

We would like to welcome on board, Ciaran O'Meara, as Assistant Coach to Willie Morrissey and Willie Quigley for our P12s. We are looking for more adults to help out with training, if interested you can contact any coach or committee member.

Congratulation to Fiona Ryan on winning the Jackpot in our club lotto on Tuesday, January 18. Fiona, a regular lotto ticket purchaser, earned herself a whopping €5,500 for a €2 ticket – 'You have to be in it, to win it'. Your club lotto ticket can be purchased from any player, committee members, local shops and public houses.

Registration takes place on Saturday, February 5, from 11am to 1pm. Youth membership for those under the age of 18 years - €20 per person (capped at €40 for more than two youth members in same household); Minor membership for those over the age of 16 years and under the age of 18 years - €20 per person; Full membership for adults over the age of 18 years - €30 (non-playing) and €40 (playing).
Youth membership registration draw will take place on February 5. We will draw a name from the paid-up youth members at that time and the winning name will receive €50. Last year's winner was Brian Healy. Who will it be this year?

In last week's GAA notes, the heading given was, 'Players told to show a bit more back-bone in the year ahead'. In fact this is not the case, as the ethos of our AGM was that our committee, members and players put more 'back-bone' into the club for the coming year! More help is needed from members and players, coaching, helping in the field, fund raising, lotto ticket sales etc. The AGM had nothing detrimental to say with regard to player's performances.

We send our best wishes for a speedy recovery to Gus Fitzgerald who has undergone major surgery last week

Racquetball is going really well at the moment and anyone interested in joining can contact Patsy Lawrence at the racquetball alley.
You can keep up to date with all our current news on Facebook as well as our GAA website, www.fethard.tipperary.gaa.ie. Both Facebook and our website are managed by John Fitzgerald and Ann Fleming. The website is currently under construction.

Thomas Sheehan photographed with Eoin Kelly at the 'Captain's Evening' in DecemberThis week we had two entries for the photo of the week. Thomas Sheehan sent in a picture with Eoin Kelly at the captain's evening in December and Andrew Phelan sent us a picture of the Under-14 County Football Final. We look forward to seeing more GAA related photos shared on Facebook, maybe some oldies as well as current ones.

Hunting News
Tipperary Foxhounds had a flier from their meet at Earlshill on Tuesday. Finding near Earlshill in Kenny's they ran to Ballyphilips through McGrath's to Coalbrook very fast. Turning left near the steeple at Copper they crossed the King's River to Tobin's. Running through Tobin's they hunted back to Lisnamrock by the school to the open cast mine. Back to Dalton's they re-crossed the road to Troy's by the booster station. Still going strong the bitch pack ran through Lickeen to Glengoole North through the forestry to New Birmingham old graveyard where he got to ground in Fitzpatrick's.
This was a very fast run of seventy minutes with scarcely a check with at least a three-mile point and much more as hounds ran. Derry decided to call it a day here as all horses and riders had just about enough.

From Moyglass on Sunday, January 23, a fox found in Tom Kelly's got quickly to ground. Finding in Buffana they ran through Walsh's and Kavanagh's to Ryall's and down to the old railway line. Hunting down by Moyglass they lost him in Clonbrogan quarry. From the willows in Fogarty's they hunted through Henry Smyth's and Trehy's back to Curraghscarteen where they caught him. Moving up the Coolanure Road they drew left-handed through Mick O'Neill's trying all the way back to Moyglass School and did not find again.

Tipperary Foxhounds promote their annual Cross Country Charity Ride on Sunday, February 6, in Moyglass village starting at 12 noon. The beneficiaries this year will be Moyglass Community Hall and Friends of Chernobyl Children, Killenaule. Further details to follow.

With the White Heathers
Foxes were difficult to find from the Ballylusky White Heather Harriers meet at Coolbawn on Sunday, January 23. Drawn the fort at the Cross blank they found in the Laurels at Hackett's. Following a short, sharp burst back to Coolbawn cross they checked. The fox was viewed crossing the main road and cast over hounds could just not hit the line. Moving down towards Coolmore in by Cooleagh graveyard, Donie drew right down to Sparrow's covering a wide area and did not find. Crossing the St. Johnstown road they drew right up to Bawnbrack Stables before finding again. This is a fairly large area to cover on foot.

They hunted a nice circle on this fox before he got to ground in a rabbit burrow. Hounds had just moved off when he bolted. He ran back towards St. Johnstown before retracing his steps back to Bawnbrack, he crossed the top road to the gorse plantation near John Ryan's where they caught him on top.

Finding again near St. Johnstown Quarry they ran through John Delaney's to John McCormack, Ballylusky, and left-handed back to Bawnbrack where he got to ground. Home was blown at 4pm. The White Heather Harriers meet Sunday next, January 30, at Coolmoyne; February 6, at Thorny Bridge and on February 13, at Coleman Cross. All meets at 11am.

Fethard & District Rugby Club
Fethard J2s travelled to Waterpark on Sunday to play in the quarter-final the Gleeson Cup. This was our first game against Waterpark this season and last year they beat us twice.

Fethard started well, with Declan Doyle putting three points on the board, and played most of the first half in the Waterpark twenty-two. A great break from Richard Gorey from the base of the scrum saw him score under the post. Another penalty was added by 'Doyler' to leave the score 13-3 in favour of Fethard at half time. The Fethard lineout seemed to be working better and this was due to the tall Robert Hall and the versatile Shane Kavanagh.

The experienced Waterpark pack stayed plugging away and two penalties saw them trail by 13pts to 9, but with Eamon Ryan and Chris Large making great breaks in the centre and Alan O'Connor his usual solid game in defence, Fethard ran out deserving winners. Brothers Dick and Andy Walsh had a fine game. Paul Scully, John Smullen, Nigel O'Connell and Kevin Hayes were also prominent.

Fethard U-13s played a fine Portlaoise side on Saturday evening with both teams were very evenly matched. Fethard blooded some new players in Griffin Ivors, Ewan Harcourt, Jack Hayes and Eoin Barry. These players had fine games in their first season. The U-13 league starts next week against Thurles in Fethard and this will be a tough encounter so a full attendance at training is required.

Fethard U-17s put in a great performance against a big Portlaoise side on Saturday with Portlaoise running out winners by 30pts to 24, in what was a very keenly contested game. Kevin Hall had a fine game in the lineouts. James Houlihan and Ger Gorey did well in the loose, while Willie Morgan, Kieran Walsh, Thomas Keavney and Dylan Fitzgerald were impressive in the back line. Next week they face Thurles in the league.
