Juvenile GAA Club
Training for Under 6-8 take place on Saturday at 11am. Please remember, if you have no helmet there will be no hurling training.
Following the huge success of Lá na gClub 2009, the GAA has decided to make this an annual fixture, with Sunday, May 9th the designated day for 2010. All clubs are urged to make this a day to remember for all their members, supporters and friends and Fethard GAA, both senior and juvenile Club, will host a fantastic local GAA
Community Day. From 12 noon we will host an under 6-8 exhibition of both hurling and football and from 2pm we will host a fun fixture for under-12 boys and girls. To add a special touch we are also holding a ‘big match’ between the 1991 county champions and 2001 county champions in football where ‘special rules’ will apply. This is a free entry, family, GAA day for all, not to be missed.

Bookings for this year’s Cúl Camp are now being taken. Contact Ann on 086 8963925 or register online at www.gaa.ie. Fethard Cúl Camp takes place from 23rd August to 27th August, for ages from 5 to 15 years.

Our under-12s played Carrick Davins on Monday 26th April and won well. Our under-16s qualified for the semifinal (again) on 26th April by beating Carrick Swans, in Marlfield. Both sides played a great game.

The GAA Code of Practise & Child Welfare will be held on Tuesday 11th May at 6pm. Contact Ann on 086 896 3925 to guarantee a place.

Ten television sets dumped on roadside

Residents at Mobarnane, Ballyvaden and Curraghscarteen, near Moyglass, carried out an organised clean-up of some of the local roads on the afternoon of Sunday 25th April. Thankfully, the rain held off. An Taisce in Dublin provided plastic refuse bags, protective gloves and good advice, and Marie Phelan of South Tipperary County Council kindly provided more gloves, as well as invaluable litter pickers. The Council furthermore has undertaken to remove the rubbish gathered.
Taking part in this community endeavour were Pat and Kathleen McCarthy and Nell Trehy of Mobarnane, Paul Keyes and Michael and Ciara Tillyer of Ballyvaden, and Barry O’Reilly and Jean Farrelly of Curraghscarteen. The haul of rubbish filled eighteen bags and a further five piles. The rubbish, which was far greater than anyone imagined, included farm plastic, plastic and glass drinks bottles, drinks cans and cartons, and much more besides, presumably thrown out of car windows. Some particularly unscrupulous individuals had dumped ten television sets and a microwave oven on one road, presumably under cover of darkness. There was also a car tyre, a complete wheel, and several hubcaps. The cleaner-uppers heaped up all the rubbish into five piles for collection. This was to show everyone just how much rubbish can be collected in two or three hours. It is also an indication of how our local roadsides in Tipperary have been spoiled by a few people who show so little regard for others.

It is hoped that the roads which have been cleaned will stay clean, providing a better amenity for walkers and horse-riders. It is essential that all cases of dumping or littering be reported immediately to the Council or the Gardaí and the individuals concerned be appropriately dealt with. We owe it to each other to create and maintain a clean environment.

Leaving Cert Class of 1990 Reunion
Calling anyone who did Leaving Cert in Fethard in 1990, it's time for our 20 year reunion. We are hoping to hold it during Fethard's Medieval Festival on Sunday 22nd August. For further information you can contact Pamela Morrissey at pamodonel@gmail.com or Niamh Kenny at niamhk2002@yahoo.co.uk. We also have a Facebook page, Fethard Co Tipp Secondary School Class of 1990 if you want to join.

Military History Society
South Tipperary Military History Society held its first lecture evening in Slievenamon Golf Club on Tuesday 20th April. The guest speaker was Mr Tom Burnell from Holycross. Tom has written several books including ‘The Tipperary War Dead’ relating to men from Tipperary killed in the Great War. He also brought some interesting artefacts, which members were able to hold and examine. It was an interesting and informative evening. Our next meeting is on 25th May at 8pm, when we will hold a guided tour of Kickham Barracks in Clonmel. Anyone interested in membership can contact Kay Neagle at 086 0655428 or by email: kayneagle@eircom.net

Medal winners at Co Tipperary Community Games Swimming Finals. L to R: Zara Hogan (bronze), Isaac Hogan (gold) and Zoë Stokes (gold).

Congratulations to Zoë Stokes, Ballybough, and William Morgan, Grangebeg, who both won gold medals at the Community Games County Swimming finals in Tipperary Town on Sunday last. Zoë put in a wonderful performance winning her heat impressively and defeating Sarah Ni Cheallaigh, a very strong swimmer from Clonmel, who won the other heat in the final.

William beat an experienced opponent Paddy Davern from Tipperary Town in his final and both are now qualified for the National Finals in Athlone. David and Tommy Morgan also gave a good account of themselves but the medals evaded them on this occasion. Hard luck on Caroline Stokes who won a gold medal last year but could not compete on Sunday due to illness, however, their first cousins Isaac and Sara Hogan, representing Kilsheelan, won gold and bronze medals respectively.

The Hogans are the children of Rowena and grandchildren of the late Michael Stokes and his wife Mildred who lived in Burke Street some years ago. Well done to all.

Fethard and Killusty Community Games will hold their area athletics finals in the GAA field on Saturday 9th May at 3pm

Ronan Keating visits Fethard

Ronan Keating, the well known Irish singer, songwriter, television presenter and charity campaigner visited Fethard last week. Ronan shot to fame as a singer in the group Boyzone. The group scaled the heights of the music business, selling millions of records and cds to adoring fans all over the world. He branched out as a solo performer in his own right when he recorded the theme tune for the huge hit film Notting Hill, ‘When you say nothing at all’. His solo career has blossomed and kept him in the limelight long after other pop sensations have faded from the scene. He co-wrote ‘The Long Goodbye’ with Paul Brady which was another international hit and has collaborated with Elton John and the Bee Gees.

The death of his mother prompted Ronan and his family to set up the Marie Keating Foundation to promote awareness about cancer. This charity has mobile information units on the road reaching all parts of Ireland. He also works as a UN Goodwill Ambassador and has scaled Mount Kilimanjaro with the Comic Relief team to raise funds for their various charities.

A keen racing fan, Keating has a share in a few horses that are in training with Tommy and Fozzie Stack. While in Fethard, he paid a visit to Coolmore Stud. This was Ronan’s second visit to Coolmore. His first visit was in a working capacity when both he and Rod Stewart played for Kate Magnier’s wedding to David Wachman.
This visit was more relaxed, so Ronan and his friends which included David Keoghan, partner of the writer Celia Ahearne, retired to McCarthy’s Hotel to watch the racing from Punchestown. It is rumoured that a tip from Bobby O Lone, who showed Ronan and co the stallions in Coolmore earlier that day, got them out of trouble with the bookies!

Ronan was spotted by a fan on her way home from work when he stepped out of McCarthy’s to answer a phone call and soon some fans made their way to meet him, where he happily signed autographs and posed for pictures.
